Good to buy an instrument as the next guy, but if you're selling, make sure to have the Reverb app at the ready. They WILL lowball you to kingdom come. If you're thinking of getting the band back together, Sam Ash should be your first stop. With great deals on nearly every aspect of the music-making process, it's the go-to destination for suburban dads who strive to be the next Radiohead or Strokes. Today, there was a five-piece drum set on sale for $99, used. I almost thought of buying one and putting it in storage for when the kids grow up and begin to have rock-star dreams. But then I remembered that I already have a drum set. (They also buy used gear.) My dream guitar, the Gibson SG, lives here in many iterations, from the version with vintage humbuckers and a pearl-inlay fretboard, to the entry-level Epiphone model, so it gives me plenty to think about when I imagine myself finally buying that axe and playing it like Jimi Hendrix. (Yes, I know he mainly used a Strat.) The staff is pretty helpful, though I was visiting early one Thursday afternoon and not on Black Friday, when the service level might be different. And how they manage to listen to shopper after shopper play Led Zeppelin on the guitars ad infinitum without going insane is beyond me. Kudos! read more

Went in a few weeks ago to purchase a Les Paul, Gibson that is. Mike in guitars really hooked me up. He was super respectful and gave me the time out of his day to really make sure I got what I wanted. He set me up with the amp I use at home with a few different guitars to try out, being a Standard, Traditional, and even a 335. I ended up wanting the 335 at first, so I put it on layaway until I came up with the cash. A few days later, the traditional was really stuck in my head. I thought that with a good setup, it could've been the one. I gave Mike a call, and he set it up wth fresh strings THAT DAY! Went in later that day to try it again, and was sold. Had that put on layaway and bought it a week later. In love with this instrument! Now the employees know me by name and it's always a joy shopping there. Just speaking from a guitar player perspective only 5 stars for the guitar tech, great work at fair hourly prices. The store layout has a limited selection of guitar amps and the guitars are placed in a way that is very difficult to just casually access as you would at a Guitar center. That's a corporate Sam Ash issue not a staff issue. The store itself is ginormous so don't hold the staff accountable if you are not immediately attended to they are friendly and helpful if you do need help! Ps did I mention 5 stars for the guitar tech, not satisfied with the results after setting up my guitar he went the extra step and leveled the frets. read more

I've been visiting here several times, the guy named mike has always been kind&helpful when it comes to buying guitars, but he does not treat you the same when you're selling it. He acted super grumpy as soon as he found out I am bringing guitar and even seemed angry at some point. He offered LESS THAN 1/3 of original price for my guitar that I bought only few months ago, but also seemed angry about even offering that price. No room for negotiation. He was so rude overall. What I like about this particular store is that it still retains somewhat of a local vibe amidst all the commercialism if the instrument industry. They are mostly good staff, certain guys are really great, including the manager. While they do have a lot of regular stuff you can find anywhere, they also have a healthy stream of used gear which is what I find most interesting. It's still a business though, so don't expect bargain basement prices, and if you trade gear you're going to get the lowest price for it. Occasionally they do have good sales and I've picked up a couple of nice guitars that were negotiated down. I like this store .... read more

They should rename the business Sam Ash Rob. We had the best experience with their guitar repair technician, ROB. Just a super cool guy and an amazing tech. And reasonable prices as well. We needed some delicate work on our vintage Violin, and he did such a nice job. He's very kind and very knowledgeable. I can't speak for the rest of the store although everyone seemed nice. But our experience with Rob was great. We will be going back to him for future repairs, and we highly recommend him to anyone reading this. read more

I would have given no stars, but that option isnt available. Went to the Springfield New Jersey store to see if they were interested in buying 2 of my professional horns. As soon as the repair person Jerry, handled the horn, just on a visual inspection, with no dents or scratches, he said it would be a hard sell. Why, i asked? He couldnt elaborate on why. The store manager, George said he was told my horn had a lot of leaks, and they werent interested in it. Thats ok. I asked him to elaborate and he couldn't. I'm a drummer, what do I know about trumpets was his reply. So, I came in to pick up my horns. I checked the piccolo trumpet , by pulling out the elbow tubing on each valve separately , blocking the top hole, pressing down all keys, and trying to blow air through the horn; and to my surprise, no leaks at all. That being said, I have lost all confidence in the Springfield store, because they lied. Very dissatisfied . It's ok that they didn't want to purchase my horns. But, they didn't have to lie. And, if any executives from Sam ash corporate offices would like me to demonstrate the no leak statement, I'd be happy to in person. THANKS, but no thanks. read more

Sam Ash of Springfield is the best music store around. Recently I went into the store to buy a guitar and I could not be happier with the instrument or the process of buying it... When it comes to large purchases such as a guitar , I am extremely diligent in regards to research and pricing. Sam Ash has the best prices I could find on the Internet or in a physical store. On top of that , they offer price protection for 2 months after your purchase just in case there is a new promotion or you find the same guitar, brand new, for a better price. The staff is very friendly, helpful and knowledgable about the instruments. I have to emphasize the best part of my buying experience: when I walked into Sam Ash the rep approached me and we had a conversation, he got a feel for what kind of guitar would be most suitable for me in my skill level and price range. He even let me know of a promotion going on to get an even better deal on the guitar I wanted . I got the guitar which was a fantastic buy and I haven't stopped playing since . In the last 2 months my skills on guitar have grown exponentially. If I could give this place a negative star , I would definitely do that. First of all I came here this past Monday and I bought a mic and a wire. Total bill cost me a little over $350 dollars. Unbeknownst to me, the guy that works at Audio , I believe his name is David , sold me the 27.99 wire instead of the cheaper one which is 17.99. I didn't realize this until I got home. Long story short, I was gifted a mic headset so I ended up returning the one I bought just 4 days prior. I never used it. I did open the box but it was never used. All the plastic is still in tact and everything. When I came back to return the item one of the managers was helping me(see photo) and he said that there's a 15% restocking fee. I didn't understand because David never explained to me or warned me or gave me a heads up informing me that. And so the manager said well it's on the back of the receipt we don't need to explain it. And I said as a manager shouldn't you enforce your workers to inform customers about your return policies? And he said nope. Are u kidding me??? Is that the attitude a MANAGER GIVES? And then he says "it's like a cell phone bill...." I cut him off and said cell phone bill and a headset are two different things. Cell phone is a monthly service and what the heck does that have to do with a return anyway. And he says "nobody wants an opener box!" He pointed at the sign up at the top of the wall which is half blocked by boxes and merchandise and I said "i can't even see that sign!!!!" He didn't even try to help just nasty attitude and no customer service. I don't know how he has a management position. I was fed up with his attitude so I said it's fine I'll just write a review and do you know what his response was?????? He said, "no problem do it!" Wow. Never coming back. He's a miserable person. All in all , out of 350 dollars I only got back 302 dollars. Wow can't believe it. This place sucks !!! read more

I really can't stand this place anymore. It's great they have a lot more variety and plenty of gear compared to the Guitar Center across the street, but the staff is terrible and the constant jam sessions are a huge inconvenience. For one, trying to buy something from these guys is like pulling teeth. They go out of their way to let you know they don't want to help you. It's like you're wasting their time trying to make a purchase. They're very dismissive and just hard to deal with. They'd rather go outside and smoke every 10 minutes than work. The jam sessions are really the worst, though. I see it's a company wide thing to have this going on (particularly on Sundays), but it's just annoying. Good luck trying to talk to anyone over the noise. Have fun demoing any gear too. If you're playing on an amp above a whisper you're going to get nasty looks and shushed as though you're bothering the "musicians." Honestly, it's just disorganized noise most of the time and these people act like you're disturbing them. I give this place 2 stars because they really do have a lot of gear and a bunch of accessories, but that's about it. They're not very well stocked on strings a lot, though. read more

I'm literally in San Ash as I am writing this review. My kido (age 8) loves playing the drums and asked if I could take him to Sam Ash. I had no idea that there was a room designed for people to test the drums. He walks over to the counter and the sales rep (Stuart, the manager of the drum department) says to him "So, you're here to play the drums - let me get you a set of drum sticks." He hands my little one the sticks and off to the players room he went. Stuart's customer service was IMPECCABLE! I'm still here, observing how the sales reps engage with the customers. They are very welcoming and appear to be very knowledgeable. If you've never visited Sam Ash or this location, you need to get here! Customer service is EXCEPTIONAL! read more

BEWARE. I brought in my guitar for a set-up and crack repair and was told it would total 2 hours of work, 3 days of drying and be ready the following Thursday at the latest. Went to pick it up the next Friday and was told that because the work was covered by the SAM ASH WARRANTY I had purchased "there's no money in it, so you're asking me to do you a favor. Don't know when I'll get to it." This was said in front of the store manager, so this attitude towards customers and the Sam Ash warranty is fully sanctioned here. I give Sam Ash full marks for consistency--every single time I go there, I ask myself why the hell I would ever go there again. It took 17 minutes today before the first person even acknowledged my presence, although he did manage to assist three guys who came in after I did. But that's not surprising, because there was no one in the recording department so they must have snatched him when he came out from "the back", wherever that is. I walked toward the cashier shaking my head and staring at the ceiling and at that point a manager (I think) came over and asked if he could help me. I said that I wanted to buy a pair of headphones. So he walked over to the counter but then got waylaid by another chatty person--employee or customer, I couldn't tell--so he pawned me off on the guy that looked my way ten or fifteen times but was too busy moving hi-hat cymbals from one stand to another. He pulled the box out from under the counter--after the "manager" had to unlock it for him (so I ended up waiting until chatty customer/employee finished anyway) and I just told him to ring it up because, at 26 minutes in the store at this point, I didn't have any time to compare them with other models. So just like the last 25 times, if I don't like these headphones I'll return them for full cash refund. If I do like them, I'll return them for a full cash refund and get them from Amazon. Sam Ash in Springfield, NJ is a deplorably run, badly managed, customer unfriendly, understaffed, hilariously unprofessional place in which to purchase audio equipment. This place is awful, but what was I expecting? They had a full band tuning up the entire time I was there. I couldn't even hear myself think, let alone hear some of the instruments I was trying out. Two guys were having a full blown drum battle right next to the keyboards. They had very little staff, which was a problem since many of their price tags were missing. Here's the backstory: Wanted to purchase Akai MPK Mini MK2 on Dec. 26, 2015. David Santana or whatever his name is in audio is my salesperson. He tells me they are out of stock. Ok, no big deal, popular item was on sale, who would blame them. He offers me the Novation Launchkey 25 mini, which is also a great item, but not what i want (i particularly want the tap arp feature that the akai mini has to offer). Of course he doesnt care and just wants the sale, says that theres so many problems with the akai, like usb and what not. I dont care, I want the item that I want. Push comes to shove, he orders the item for me through the store. I ask when itll be in, he says maybe a week. I call a week later, its not in. I ask for a tracking number, they say they dont have any. I call multiple times to talk to multiple people about it, and all of them give me nasty attitudes saying things like warehouse blah blah. I remember a particular name Travis. I ask for ETAs for its arrival at the store and they are all wishy washy about it. About a month later, david calls my phone. I return the call and he tells me that they are back ordered till march. WELL JEE WHIZ. couldnt you tell me that the week i called (week of jan 1st). I played at like 4 shows since then that it would have been a useful tool. I go back, of course he tries to sell me the novation again, esp after i tell him i dont want it. I tell him I want my money back. of course he panics because he'll lose the sale and commission, so he goes about calling other stores if they have it in stock. Of course they dont (because they are all back ordered till march :P ). He gets the manager (old guy, black hair, glasses, was wearing a beanie and hoodie. likes to smoke, works on monday night shift of 1/28/16). He opens the register to get the $99.99 i was owed. I said I had 5 cents, so I could get 100 in bills and 4 pennies. He says "Nope. Maybe you shouldnt return things anymore. So now you have a pocket full of change". Terrible terrible person. Either ways, long story short. Guitar Center across rt 22 will have in tomorrow on wednesday 1/27/16. Thanks, guitar center. Ill shop with you again. read more

Keep away - really nasty staff. Went yesterday and did not get any help. Needed to find a book for my daughter. There were 3 staff members standing at the register, doing nothing and one guy with a line of app. 10 people on the instrumental side. When I approached the register to engage the 3 idle people and solicit some help, I was told to stand in line to the instrumental guy (it would have taken me over 1 hour)! Unbelievable! Needless to say left the store and ain't coming back...Will complain to corporate though... read more

We walked in needing help setting up our karaoke equipment and purchase a speaker for it. George T. immediately helped us with the speaker and then Reginal M. helped us with the connections. I had pictures of the various component of our system on IPad. Reginal went out of his way to print pictures, cut notes and draw arrows to what cord goes where. This is not boutique shopping but, who expects service like that when walking into a Sam Ash? And, actually I don't always want it. I go to Sam Ash to play an instrument until it screams "take me home." I am not there to buy a 5k guitar or a 10k DW drum set. I am there to get good enough equipment for a fair price. That requires sifting through equipment without a salesman bothering me. I know what I am looking for. When I have a question I will come to you. If you are busy I will wait. Most of the time someone will ask me questions while I am there before asking the salesmen. The Sam Ash environment allows you to talk amongst the players and gain some insight from working musicians rather than have some sales guy forcing an Ibanez Bass on you. It's a hangout spot so breathe it in. When I want the service that others are suggesting I will go somewhere else. That type of service happens when the salesman can have confidence that every instrument they present to you is some kind of gem. $$$ read more

I've been buying gear at Sam Ash for decades and have always loved the selection and pricing. Not always the quickest assistance, but for the most part, the team knows their stuff. As I recently began unloading an entire music studio worth of gear accumulated over the years, I needed to get a repair on a cable from an original Fender Rhodes keyboard from the 70's. I had little hope that anyone could repair it and I brought it to Sam Ash to give it a shot. After being told to go in the back to speak with their tech/repair guy who was supposed to be off this day and only working on his own equipment, I found him and reluctantly asked if I could inquire about cable repair. I felt bad it was his day off and didn't want to bother him. He didn't bat an eyelash. His name is Brian and before I knew it he was breaking down the components of the cable and checking the connections, etc. In five minutes he knew the problem but the unfortunate thing was that the cable pins were almost impossible to find as they were so old. Not to worry he told me. He had recently found an electronics shop in Greenbrook that would have them. It was possible to be repaired! On his day off he drove out to Greenbrook and got the pieces for repair and rebuilt and reconstructed my cable. Unreal service. The best part was it only cost me $25 and he was able to get the job done in a few days. Brian gets my 5 star rating for exceptional service. In a day where people don't want to do anything "extra" let alone work on their day off, Brian drove to get the parts and begin the repair. The whole time I was talking with him he was courteous and engaging and actually excited about fixing the item. Great experience. Thanks Sam Ash, give this guy a raise. read more

I, contrary to some other reviewers, had a great experience my last couple of visits. All of the staff I interacted with while there were friendly and helpful. The woodwind department was quick and helpful while processing paperwork for repairs, and were very friendly. The sound department was also very helpful, and friendly. They went out of their way to help me find various items that would work because they did not have exactly what I needed in stock. As they were processing my transaction I overheard another employee who was helping a customer with deciding on a pair of headphones. He seemed very knowledgeable about the topic and willing to help. I wish I had gotten the names of these employees so that I could name them to the manager. All of the other reviews mention the distraction of a band or group of people playing, and while this could be very annoying, it all depends on WHEN you go. For example I almost always go on a Saturday night when it is not as busy and there are no people playing in the background. They have posters everywhere advertising when their open stage nights are, so I just do my best to not go on those days. Besides, is it really the fault of that particular store that the company says that they HAVE to do this every Sunday or Tuesday?They have a very wide range of gear and instruments, their woodwind department is one of the largest and most diverse ones I have seen in the area. Instead of just the basic student models and store models of instruments, they carry student, intermediate, and pro models. Every time I go I see a new assortment of instruments. Overall, I consistently have a great experience whenever visiting this store. read more

I understand all stores have bad reviews and what musicians expectations are, so this review based on my experience at the Sam Ash Route 22 store. For one, I find the staff to be way more knowledgeable and they are actually old school working musicians compared to the mostly stand-offish millennial "sales people" across the street at guitar center. Yeah Sam Ash is a little slower and you spend a few more minutes than you would across the street where someone is attempting to just sell you on an instrument you really don't want. If Sam Ash doesn't have what you want they will find and have it at the store in a few days. The store manager has always been honest and yes I have had to return things but never without an issue or getting at least getting store credit. I am partial to Sam Ash and find it more of a place for professionals and not beginners looking for a Squire Stratocaster all-in-one Package or a Casio keyboard.
