And how blessed am I to be able to class this utter treat as my old local! It's as homely a place as ever you'd find and the beer is twice as nice. The decor speaks of times gone by, and yet the olde days meet the new, welcoming in the latest generation of real ale drinkers who sup on their Uley bitter, like a duck takes to water. And no, in real ale country we don't use sparklers. Pints are filled to the top, if you don't mind, none of that half-a-pint-o-head business in here! Yes, in this CAMRA awarded pub you can expect to find the finest brews. The antiquated sit comfortably next to the whipper snappers and drink harmoniously until close, enjoying the lamp heated sheltered garden and cosy interior. Under the steady headship of Steve I don't think I've ever spent a night in here unsatisfied with the ambience, booze and company - this place is the only place to go in Dursley town.

I'm a vegan, so my expectations for finding something tasty at a UK Pub didn't seem very high. Even in the US, I find pub menus about the most vegan-unfriendly. I didn't see anything on the menu to eat, so I e-mailed them in advance to see if there were some options available. Not only did they get back to me right away, but they offered me several off-menu options for starters, dinner, and even dessert: Starters: Soup of the day (we can do a veg soup if you book) Orange & Walnut Salad with Watercress & Balsamic Dressing Sun-Blushed Tomato, Olive & Artichoke Salad Dinner: Mushroom Stuffed Vine Tomatoes with Tempura Veg & Salsa Verde Dressing Cous Cous Stuffed Peppers with Mixed Salad & New Potatoes Marinated Tofu & Noodle Stir fry with Bean Sprouts Dessert: Red Wine Poached Pear With Sorbet Fruit Salad with Fruit Coulis Glazed Pineapple with Mango & Chlli Are you kidding me? I don't get great options like this even when eating at restaurants with vegan options. I got the orange/walnut salad, cous cous stuffed peppers and glazed pineapple and everything was fantastic! Some of the best food I've ever eaten. This place can really cook. (By the way, my non-vegan colleagues loved their food as well) If you are vegan and want to go here, please e-mail them in advance, so they can provide some options and plan for your visit. Not only was the food great, but the place has a nice cozy atmosphere and the owner and staff are great. Not only was the service great, but the owner actually drove us all back to our hotel in Swindon, which isn't that close. I can't say enough about this place, because it was such a surprise. I wish they would come to Minneapolis and set up a restaurant here, because it would beat every pub in town. The next time I go to Swindon, I will be back.

I discovered Three Crowns while working as a consultant in nearby Swindon one summer. This cozy pub was the "go-to" spot whenever the team needed a break from our normal routine (hotel food or late night kebab trucks). Particularly memorable was the "Taste of the Wild"-- kangaroo, ostrich, and venison. The meat wasn't too gamy, and cream sauce was amazing! The homemade desserts are also fantastic. They even have a proper English cheese tray that they roll right up to your table. The Stilton I tried was far and away the best I've ever eaten. And cheese for dessert! Boy, the British sure know how to live! It's a lovely drive into the countryside (including some sketchy single-lane roads!) and well worth it once in a while to splurge on a great meal!

A lovely local pub in Winterbourne Down…read more This has been my family's local pub for around 20 years and it hasn't changed one bit. It's still as charming, still has the same locals, still the same landlord and, I think, still the same roaring log fire. The Cross Hands doesn't do food, but it does do lots of guest ciders, ales and a brilliant atmosphere. The landlord and landlady (Pete and Lesley) are great (Pete is the spitting image of Peter Stringfellow - with open shirt and hairy chest) and make you feel like part of the furniture - which can make leaving quite difficult at times! Friday nights are good fun. Typical local pub style. A bit of cheese on the jukebox and a good mix of young'ens and old'ens to keep it interesting from one end of the pub to the other. But the best thing about this pub isn't its huge back garden. It isn't the fact you can use one of their massive BBQ's and bring your own meat/food. It isn't even the regular events they hold in the summer with live bands and cider in boxes. The best thing about the Cross Hands is the pub dog. A beautiful Staffordshire Bull terrier who has the gentlest demeanour and wonderful personality. She'll pin her belly to the ground and wiggle her way over to say hello. All the while snorting like a little pig. She has her own arm chair and sits with the locals who play cards on the big round table from 4pm every day. This is a lovely little boozer that has a huge garden for the summer and wonderful warm log fire for the winter. As it is out of town, you can knock 40-80p off the price of pint. A must if you're in the area.

The great British pub is a classic institution. It's been there in one way or another ever since we…read moreBrits figured out how to ferment hops, fry pork skin into bite sized, teeth shattering bits of salty nastiness and realised that you can make a small fortune out of charging earth shattering amounts for a small glass of grape juice to someone stupid enough to pay it! It stands in most towns and villages like a proud relic of what used to be. No longer are they places purely for drinking, talking about your latest sexual conquest, arguing the toss over who should have won the football at the weekend and putting the world to rights with your mates after a long week at work. Pubs nowadays are places of sophistication, smartness, elegance and above all gastronomy. This is mainly because most breweries are quite happy to royally shaft their tenants on rent and beer costs, tying them into everything so therefore they have no option but to cater for the masses and dedicate part of their ye olde tavern into a makeshift Claridges. But all that aside, I like a pub. Most of them are great places to eat and drink. And there are still a few hidden gems that are purely drinking houses but the majority are now gastro pubs. And most offer great food. One of those great pubs is in the village where I live. The Railway Tavern in Charfield is a family run pub that offers home cooked pub grub at a good cost and portion sizes are generous to say the least. I have visited this place now three times. Each time I've had a different meal and each meal a delight to eat. On my first visit I had their southern fried chicken burger. Freshly made and the southern fried coating was light and well seasoned. I'm guessing homemade and not out of a packet or a tub. On my second visit I had the chicken goujon starter followed by their homemade lasagne. Both dishes where excellent. The lasagne was very tasty, fresh and plentiful. My third visit I had steak and ale pie with chips. The pie was a proper pie. And if you are a regular reader of mine then you'll know how I detest with an evangelical passion puff pastry lids! So I was glad when this turned up. Taste wise it was nice but a little over seasoned for me. I'd like not to die at the dinner table of a salt induced heart attack! The pastry was a little tough to cut into which makes me wonder how how fresh this was? But it was a nice and pleasant dish. Well put it this way I ate it all so it couldn't have been that bad. The rest of the menu is fairly extensive with plenty to choose from. Some dishes like the Cambodian Street food curry you wouldn't find on any other pub menu. This is one for those vegans! I think it's law now that you have to keep them happy otherwise they start squatting in your car park telling the world how monstrous you are for eating chicken. The dessert menu is a little small with only a few things to choose from. I can highly recommend their sticky toffee pudding with custard. With a 6pm supper club most days this is an ideal place to eat midweek if you don't want to fire up the oven at home. You won't be disappointed if you go, this is a great little place. What else I like about this place apart from being on my doorstep is that the staff are lovely. Really helpful and friendly. They are a credit to the owners. The pub itself is traditional in decor and very homely and inviting. A traditional English village pub it has all the charm you'd expect and is family friendly. I'll definitely be returning and I'd highly recommend as I have do already to anyone.

Ordered our food and waited an hour for our food to come out, ordered the mixed roast at £18 as we wanted all the trimmings, when it came out it looked like scraps of leftovers! Cold Yorkshire pudding, cold stuffing, no crackling, lukewarm potatoes, not even complete meats, waited 10 mins for the veg which looked nowhere near enough for 1 person let alone 2! We asked the lad who served us to tell what meat we had as they all looked the same ....scraps, he said he had no idea. Asked a lady if she was the manager, her response, depends who's asking. Explained the issue, she was uninterested, just said they were very busy today but just read their reviews as they are really good! So leaving this one for you to decide! Would not go back ever again! Total shambles! And no way of getting a Sunday roast this late in the day so thank you very much!

A few elderly chaps in the corner, a couple with their little dog next to their table, and lots of local flair! After a hike through the countryside, my sister-in-law and I stopped here for some post-hiking sustenance around lunch. This 17th century rustic, cottage-style lodge serves ale, hard cider, and some down-home English country soul food! I shared a bacon and brie sandwich, added a little ketchup, and OMG! My taste buds were very merry, indeed. Top it all off with a pint of dry English cider. This pub has a gorgeous authenticity about it, with its cracked stone walls and cozy "wood and wine" color theme. It's full of some serious character! Seating is limited, so you might want to call ahead to check if they are busy. And their website lets you know what local ales are currently being offered on tap. This is a real hidden gem, Dursley! Thanks for making this silly American girl very happy.
