Part of Clarence Fahnestock State Park, it stretches long and windy (shore line of nearly 4 miles around) up Route 301 and is about 100 acres of wetland and forest to explore, with picnic sites, boat ramp, a dock and trails. There are copious amounts of fish (bass, bullhead) in these backed-up reservoirs and unlike the mighty Hudson River; there are no nuisances like ships, dinghys, haulers, traulers.. Canopus Lake is a quiet and calm lake close to both Garrison and the neoned restaurants/bars in the river town of Cold Spring, NY. This area is not as forlorn and uninhabited as say western Massachusetts: it's got some fantastic, taste-bud dazzling dining, gas stations that double as markets, infamous West Point - as well as nifty outdoor exploration venues; like Canopus Lake! Very knowledgeable on the history of the area which was awesome to hear about! Then we get on the river and with in minutes we were getting bites and having fun! We had about 50 combined hits and landed 3 beautiful native trout! Mark was kind, patient and very funny! On the way back up the river to the car, we encountered 2 other gentlemen fishing- but not having luck, Mark took the time to show them what to use and talk strategy. To me this is someone that loves to fly fish and wants to share his love of the sport with everyone. We felt his passion in the four hours we spent with him, and fell in love with the sport ourselves. We will no doubt fish with Mark again in the future!

The lake is stocked every year with trout and there are plenty of bass, crappies, and pan fish as well. I think boat rentals are about $20/hr. There are plenty of trails but they aren't maintained that well which is actually how I like it. Gives you somewhat of a challenge. Alcohol isn't allowed in PA state parks but if you need to wet your whistle, The Dutchman Tavern is right on Rt. 507 of you go north and Hammerjax Bar and Grill is on the end of Phillps Road about 1 mile from the park.
