A brisk morn ushered the canal-travelling Xonuts crew to seek refuge in the warm comfort of the Neutral Ground Coffeehouse. The cozy establishment smelled of coffee, pastries, and good vibes. Dave and Bo each ordered a coffee (Bo, of course, leaving room for cream but Dave enjoying it the way God intended). As they perused the seductive baked goods, Dave abdicated the choice to Bo while secretly hoping Bo would land on the S'more Brownie. Alas, he did not. Though peace and harmony reigned in Baked Goods Land with the introduction of the seasonal Egg Nog Scone. The scone adventure proved fruitful - an ingredient - perhaps egg nog - avoided the dryness trap of a traditional scone, yielding a fluffy and cakey consistency. While pondering breakfast selections, Bo and Dave arrived at the same item at the same time. Sal's Breakfast Chowder, $8.00. Sal promised to deliver a creamy chowder, complete with all the breakfast trappings - bacon, potato, egg, cheese, onion, and a hint of maple. And deliver he did. Just ask Dave - he was the only one bold enough to try the chowder. A heavenly mix of a traditional deconstructed breakfast meal, constructed into a chowder. There's a reason why Bo and Dave - in fifteen years of Xonutsing - never encountered a breakfast chowder. Because it is a high-risk, high-reward creation. Can you or I recreate this at home? Absolutely not. Can any restaurant attempt this with the same results as Neutral Ground Coffeehouse? Probably not. This is a one-of-a-kind, can't-find-anywhere-else, you're-crazy-if-you-think-you-can-do-this-on-your-own meal. Bo, on the other hand, celebrating the geography, elected for the Towpath Sandwich, $9.50. Sal (or someone else who imagines these brave breakfast creations) promised a bacon and egg sandwich with brie and caramelized balsamic onion jam on choice of bread. Bo was tempted by other menu items, until he saw, on the Towpath, "caramelized balsamic onion jam." So many adjectives! You can't even fit more adjectives! Bo got the sandwich on sourdough - a departure from his typical raisin bread. They did not offer that as an option, and Bo did not inquire. Perhaps he missed out on leveling up the Towpath Sandwich. Perhaps not. The world may never know. But of this, he is sure - the eggs came thick and the bacon came as neither crispy nor chewy: they were cooked to normal bacon standards. And they adhered to the bread with, you guessed it, the above-described onion jam! The jam added a much-appreciated heartiness to the sandwich, reminiscent of a cozy onion soup. And in these cold times, added heartiness is always welcome. While Dave's back was turned, Bo also dipped his sandwich into the chowdah. [chef's kiss emoji] One last tantalizing detail - the Neutral Grounds Coffeehouse has a plethora of shelves, sundries, and knicknacks to explore. Bring your sense of adventure and your appetite. TL;DR: If you haven't gone, go. If you have gone, go again. Bo and Dave rank this a 9 out of 10. But beware - the Neutral Ground Cofeehouse opens at 8am - not 7:30 like the traditional Xonuts haunts. Make it a special occasion. Pro Tip: get your scone warmed up! Don't Miss: breakfast chowder! You will not see its like in any other restaurant frequented by mortal men. read more

This is such a nice coffee shop in an amazing location. I stopped in here after a walk along the Erie Canal trail and was not sorry I did! The cold brew was excellent, the staff was friendly and helpful, and the inside was great to hang out inside and catch up with a friend. They had lots of specialty drinks and treats, also. read more

Woah..... soooo surprised by this place and not in a good way. Slow service and filthy bathroom. NOT what I expected from a canal side Pittsford establishment. Waited in line for sooooo long to order a couple of coffees. Sorry to say we got discouraged and also super turned off by the bathroom. The baseboard trim was absolute filth-a-fied alll the way around. The toilet needed a deep clean inside and out. If you can't keep your bathroom clean, how dirty if your kitchen? Pros- -Candy nook with many items for purchase for kids -Nice Adirondack chairs for sitting in the sun and people watching the canal walkers. read more

Very nice coffee shop across from the canal. Outdoor seating and indoor ambiance with tables and merchandise for sale. Pet friendly inside and out. Was greeted with a friendly hello. I got the last half cup of Jamaican me crazy so she brewed a new pot. Unfortunately I had grounds in the bottom. I am sure had I mentioned it they would have given me a new cup, but I was engaged in conversation with a new friend so I did not go back up to the counter. I will revisit. read more

After moving to Boston, I realized how much I missed the aesthetics of coffee on the Erie Canal. The Neutral Ground Coffee cafe has such cute vibes, great seating options, and amazing drink options. In addition to drinks, they also offer pastries and meal options. This morning I opted for an iced snicker doodle latte with almond milk and it was AMAZING. It made me realize just how much I missed my home town (being Pittsford). I didn't try any food this morning but noticed they don't have many gluten free options (I'm gluten free). However, their drinks are all gluten free (even smoothies). Neutral ground is always a must go latte stop when I visit Rochester. I can't wait to come back next time I visit. read more

Stopped by this charming coffee shop a couple times on a recent trip to the area. One morning for breakfast I ordered the oatmeal with berry topping. The berry topping was an additional fee ($1.50) which is expected but the amount of berry added was pretty sparse (a sliced strawberry or two is all). For my coffee order, I got a mocha which was tasty! The dining room is large, offering plenty of table seating. They seem to reserve one side for events and gatherings. There was a baby shower gathering while I was there and they had the tables nicely decorated. It was a great place to get a little work done and the service is lovely. Get to it! read more

The Pittsford sandwich is delicious. It comes with sliced turkey and cranberry aioli. If you add the chips, it gives the sandwich an extra crunch. Sometimes it gets super packed on weekends and there's a long line. For drinks, I like the hot matcha with oat milk and the vanilla latte with syrup. It's a super cute spot to catch up with friends and there's ample parking in the back. Afterwards you can take a nice walk along the canal. read more

Everyone was super friendly and accommodating. I can see it being easy to sit and enjoy coffee and food here. The atmosphere is very laid back and cozy. On the other hand, I was not a huge fan of what I got. I got an oatmilk latte and didn't want to finish it in the end. My egg sandwich on sourdough was taste burnt. Maybe I am an odd one out when I don't like my food "charred", which is the new hip thing to do. Not sure if all the sandwiches are like this or not. I would go back again and try another item. Got breakfast in Pittsford and decided to walk around the cute town afterwards. Since I didn't have any coffee at breakfast, I was in need of a caffeine fix. There were 3-4 people ahead of me, but I didn't expect it to take as long as it did. It took about 10 min to get to the front of the line to order and then another 20 minutes to actually get my coffee. Also seemed pretty pricey... $8 for a latte! I guess coffee in general is just getting expensive. The latte wasn't even that great. Definitely not worth the price or the wait. I really wanted to love this place but the service was super slow. I was hoping to pop in for a quick bite to eat and with an active toddler, I was hoping for it to be a lot quicker than expected. I ordered what I thought would be the fastest thing on their menu which was their breakfast chowder and a single scoop of ice-cream and the place wasn't even that crowded. There was probably one family before me who was ordering lunch at the time. My ice cream seemed to take a while too. My ice cream had went and gone and then after some more waiting, my chowder finally came. Despite that, the chowder was really nice but had to bring most of it home since my toddler son had grown impatient. Definitely the food was great and a nice location by the canal but service needs to be quicker. Great coffee shop with nice food and drinks. Service is not slow as others have commented. However, just don't order your food with Asian names because the server with red hair will not remember the name. I repeatedly asked if the sandwiches on the counter are for me, but the server just shut me down like I don't speak English and evener helped me double check the name. Very frustrated 10 minutes seeing my order on the counter before another server helped us confirm the name for name of the order. As a Pittsford resident, I felt being treated differently as a minority for the fist time. Unbelievable. read more

What an awesome addition to Schoen Place! Such a needed canalside feature and there's so much to love about this spot. A few of my favorite things are: - The INCREDIBLE attached event space that holds ~50 people. Perfect for meetings, showers, rehearsal dinners, special breakfasts, or whatever else you can dream up. The space is A/V ready and the menu is totally customizable. - If you're walking the canal with your dog and want to bring them in quick to grab a coffee, that is ALLOWED. I can't tell you how awesome that is. There are many times when I am walking the canal with my pup and want to stop into a biz but can't because I have her with me. This was a brilliant choice and also makes for the best place to work or sit and enjoy a coffee because...you get to see OPP (other people's pets). - The menu is fantastic and the coffee delicious. They go into detail on their website about where they source from. - The owner Marianne is amazing. Her story is so special and she's clearly created a really amazing community within the shop and beyond. I can't wait to go back and enjoy a cup of coffee every time I am on the canal. Just had a meeting here and it was phenomenal! They have THE perfect space for bridal or baby showers, or even birthday brunches. The food is 5 stars - try the breakfast chowder! Their croissants and cronuts are incredible too. I also got a decaf latte and their decaf espresso is spot on. All in all, I can't say enough good things. This is my new go-to place. read more

Went to Neutral Ground for a quick togo lunch and it was great! First, the location is great - the decor is trendy and there is lots of space inside. The lady that took our order was peppy and knowledgable. We ordered a few sandwiches (both delicious) and the chili with a shot of espresso on top - I know it sounds weird but it was so unique and flavorful! The place is cute on the outside so it is just disappointing once you actually order. I've tried ordering coffee there twice (i've tried the latte, the cappuccino, and the regular hot cup of coffee) and both times, it was very watery and not worth the $7!!!!!!!! But the lunch menu was a little more limited than we expected. So we decided to just grab coffee and sit for a bit before heading elsewhere to eat. The iced lattes and cold brews are good here! But the iced drinks are so full of ice that you are barely getting any actual coffee. At 12pm on a Saturday, I was surprised to see there weren't any pastries really left. The Cronut was filling but it was also quite heavy and oily, as I was expecting it to be more light and fluffy. The hard ice cream offering is a small selection from Purity Ice Cream Co. in Ithaca (I first mistook it for Perry's). It was decent, although the service was friendly. I will never visit this establishment again. Today my wife and I went for brunch and we ordered "the barge" breakfast burrito. I took them over to the table after waiting 30mins and immediately noticed a hair in my wife's burrito. She is easy going and understands sometimes things like that happen and let it go. Well I get to my second half of my burrito and sure enough a hair inside it. I couldn't even believe it I was so disgusted I immediately walked out. I was so annoyed at that point and there was a line that I didn't even bother going up to the counter to complain Two burritos we ordered and both had hair. Unacceptable and disgusting to say the least. My other complaint was the burrito description says it had hash browns. Instead ours had huge chunks of undercooked potatoes. Nice coffee shop in Pittsford. I tried this place with my boyfriend the other day and we really loved the atmosphere of the shop. I also love the rocking chairs and tables they have outside.
