If you're in Los Angeles - don't miss this gem This is a collection of extremely rare automobiles that have been restored to their original condition. This was the collection of Mr. Nethercutt of Merle Norman cosmetics. They also have a collection of turn of the century musical machines and organs which they will play for you. You do need reservations for the guided tour and the low price is well worth it. If you live in LA you should schedule a tour and definitely bring your out-of-town guests.

An absolute hidden gem in southern Los Angeles! Be sure to take your family (sons/daughters, grandkids), and friends (in town or out of town) visit this museum! We did it yesterday and enjoyed both self-guided and guided tours tremendously. You should allow 4 hours for fun! It has a huge parking lot next to the museum. All cars are exquisitely restored to their original form and functionally drivable automobiles. Every year each car will be taken out of the museum for a joy ride in town, onto the highway, and drive through! 1) Go online to reserve your tickets for the free 2-hour guided tour on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday at 10 am or 1:30 pm. 2) Be sure to spend an extra two hours before or after and visit the other building (free to roam around) and the train. 3) In the last part of the guided tour, go to the 4th floor - music room, grab a sofa, just sit back and enjoy the music while relaxing your legs and toes. It was just heavenly enjoyable! The organ music was just amazing! 4) Bonus: it is FREE! 5) You can also check out other events on the website for silent movies and organ music! 6) The gentleman who is the curator of the museum is an absolutely awesome and very knowledgeable tour guide. He gave a very informative history of every car and every piece of musical instrument in the museum! He is the one who makes every piece of musical instrument functionally working in the museum! This place just has an awesome and incredible collection of treasures!

Fantastic collections - cars, music boxes, orchestrions, record players, furniture, etc, etc, etc. a truly unique collection and a lasting tribute to functional fine art. Free, courtesy of Merle Norman Cosmetics. What a great public service! The tour is very enjoyable and educational. Not a stuffy as it once was. The tour guide, Kyle Erwin, knows a lot about a lot and shares both his knowledge and enthusiasm generously. This is a museum like no other!

Awesome Collection. Great Tour Guide. Incredible History. The history of the Nethercutt family never ceases to amaze me. The facility is just incredible, certain elements are just breathtaking. The Tour Guide and Curator are so well informed as are the volunteer docents. You're able to get up close and personal with everything. Functional Art. If you have the time book a tour, all tours are guided there are no self guided tours. Tour length is 2 hours and there are stairs and lots of walking. For those of you with kids, kids MUST be 10 years or older there are no exceptions. You're able to take AS MANY pics as you want BUT NO FLASH NO FLASH NO FLASH this includes NO FLASH on your cell phones. NO FLASH and NO FLASHLIGHTS. I can't tell you how many times they stopped the tour to tell someone about their f'n flash. Annoying. You'll learn the history of the automobile, but also so so so much more. The also have a private personal locomotive on display that you can view from the outside and also from the inside. The museum which is different from the collection does afford you the opportunity for a self guided tour. The museum houses about 100 class and historic vehicles that can be viewed during operational hours without a reservation. The collection requires a reservation and is two hours but well worth it. Sadly the two hours flies by when the tour is over you don't want to leave. If you're a fan of cars this is a must see and a must do. If you're not a fan of cars, you'll still enjoy for the history. Not to fret there's more to this place than meets the eye so if you don't like cars they have you covered with all the other wonders that are contained within this off the beaten path find. I hope you find this review useful.

Do not miss this by appointment only tour. You cannot join this tour unless you have booked a spot for yourself and your companions. On the second floor there is a collection of car hood ornaments and music boxes and on the third floor there is a Wurlitzer organ which they will give you a live performance. Incredible tour and it is free. Can't beat that.

The most iconic Duesenberg

I love this place! I can't believe it's free you just need to make a reservation. I agree it's longer than it needs to be but I appreciate things like this! They have the most iconic Duesenberg car here it's gorgeous!! They don't make them like they used to. I took my 13 year old son and his friend and they enjoyed it. You can sit on any of the fancy chairs during the tours so take advantage of that. Our guide was nice and very informative. I'm planing on returning with family and friends.

I haven't been back in 4 years, but wanted to show car enthusiast friend how spectacular Nethercutt's collection is, since my friend is a luxury car collector (but he only has 5 high end cars in his small collection, hahaha). Travel back in time, as this museum preserves & restores the authenticity of their vintage pieces. Please see my old review listed under NETHERCUTT MUSEUM listing for more details. This avoid confusion, this review is listed under Nethercutt Collection Tours. Enjoy your exercise standing, climbing stairs, & walking for 2 hours, LOL!

Showroom

This place was recommended to my fiancé and I by our landlord who actually was buddies with JB Nethercutt in his early years. We called and made an appointment for a Saturday tour and took my finances father here for his 65th birthday. I expected to see a showroom filled with classic cars but was beyond blown away at all the other collectibles, musical pieces and different makes of cars included in this collection. We had two tour guides whose main jobs are to research the history of each car and musical piece in the collection to make sure they are restored historically correct and make sure they stay running properly. Knowledgeable is an understatement when describing these two. It was so cool to see the passion they had and absorb all the knowledge they shared about each piece. I wish I could remember their names... But the lady wore glasses and the gentleman was bald. :) There are three floors in the collection. The main floor is the grand showroom which has rotating cars so you may see different models if you come multiple times. The second floor is filled with various collectibles (hood ornaments, trophies, porcelain dolls). The third floor (my favorite) is the musical floor. I don't want to give away too much about this floor because it's quite an experience to walk into when you have no expectations of what you will see/hear. But, it was an entertaining and amazing experience on that third floor. You gotta see it!!! Also, grandmas and grandpas would enjoy this tour because there are a lot of nostalgic and rare musical instruments that I am sure would put smiles on their faces once they heard again. I will be coming back with my grandma soon! The only drawback about the tour is that there isn't enough time allowed to explore each floor of the collection. There are so many things to look at!! After the tour, you can head next door to check out the Merle Norman cosmetics store or head across the street to the actual Museum (no appointment required) to see MORE cars! There is also a train caboose behind the museum that was restored to its historic origins (interior decor and all!) that was an added bonus to be able to walk through. I can't say enough great things about visiting the collection and taking the tour. Book an appointment on your next free weekend, you will leave this place with an overwhelming feeling of nostalgia... Oh, and the best part, it's FREE!!!

the nethercutt tour was awesome...i'm not as into cars as other people, but it was great to learn the history behind some of these cars and the history of the collection. the staff were so kind and friendly. all the rooms were air conditioned and clean as heck. i'd def. bring friends here who are into cars. thanks for the tour!

The experience is a mix of guided and self-paced exploration, which offers a nice balance. It wraps up with a gift shop at the end. Overall, a really enjoyable and worthwhile experience.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about our experience here at Rubel Castle. Our host, guide,…read moreand local "Rubelligent" volunteer, Ms. Kathleen had all the intel about this historical property. She was so knowledgeable and helped set the stage for us to slip into a forgotten era and get a glimpse of how imagination met inventiveness with a DIY charm. ~ A LITTLE BACKSTORY FOR YOU ~ It's not pronounced Rubel as Barney from Flintstones. Rather, it's like Target is to Targét when we are trying to be fancy. So that's Rubel as in "Roo-bell." Unlike modern-day construction, Rubel Castle wasn't built overnight. It was made of collected recyclables and construction rubble that spanned many decades and took several friends and volunteers to build it. For Michael, however, the lifetime inspiration was first sparked at the age of 9. His love for canons was where it started and the rest is history you can hear about on the tour. But don't just show up like we did randomly one day. To book, visit RubelTours.org and make a reservation. ~ OUR TOUR EXPERIENCE ~ It's as if Michael Rubel, the creator and mastermind of this enchanted dominion had intended it to be--magical. Built in the castle period of wood and tin, every corner captured our interests, from antique cars to the 1890's Seth Thomas Tower Clock with a unique backstory (and only six in existence today). There were old vending machines, tools, trinkets, and machinery that time had long forgotten. Did I mention there was a drawbridge? Yes, and a dungeon too. I was just waiting for a dragon to come swoop down on us next. Walk in the footsteps of famous visitors like Alfred Hitchcock, Dwight Eisenhower, Jack Benny, and Bob Hope. It's a feast for the eyes no matter where you glance. I particularly enjoyed the bottle house that Michael built in 1968 as his "home" as a kid. That independent spirit was quite charming to see. ~ WATERCOLOR NATURESCAPE ~ We were fortunate to have our gracious host lead us on a tour and organize a special art crafting experience outdoors. It was absolutely lovely beneath the trees and between rusted vintage cars from the turn of the century. We each got a small canvas to paint our flowers in watercolor. (This particular experience takes place in the Spring and Fall, weather permitting.) We heard the squirrels rattling in the leaves and birds chirped and sang in the trees above. We discovered that peacocks apparently originated from this property, compliments of Michael Rubel. And did I mention that on the far side of the property, a custom garden was in full bloom? BOOK A TOUR Help support the Glendora Historical Society and keep this magnificently unique city-castle maintained. It's worth it.

A castle in Glendora? Yes, your eyes aren't deceiving you--Rubel Castle is real, it's magnificent,…read moreand it's gloriously eccentric. Thanks to the sheer persistence (and probably delightful stubbornness) of Michael Rubel, we now have this quirky, towering State Treasure sitting right in the middle of Glendora like a fairy tale that accidentally took a detour through a hardware store. This place is beautifully done, and part of its charm is that it's a full-on hodgepodge of relics, antiques, crystal trinkets, and "wait... what is that doing here?" moments tucked into every nook and cranny. You'll marvel, you'll laugh, you'll squint in confusion--honestly, it's everything you'd want in a castle built with love, imagination, and a dash of madness. And let's talk about the makeshift cemetery. Quirky? YES. Fun? Absolutely. Slightly spooky? Only if your imagination is over-caffeinated. But it fits the vibe perfectly--like the castle whispered, "You know what I'm missing? A tiny cemetery." The tours are fantastic, the guides are passionate, and the whole experience feels like you're stepping into a living scrapbook of California history and charming chaos. Overall: Amazing, amazing place. Book your tour. They only do tours every first Sunday of the month, so set your alarms, mark your calendars, tie a string around your finger--just don't miss it. Rubel Castle is truly a California State Treasure, and an absolute must-see for anyone who appreciates creativity, history, and a little eccentric sparkle.

There was also more to be said about the feeling of awe and the sense of just how small a microcosm we really are in this vast, beautiful, natural and manmade world. We chose the sunset tour, which took us in a loop from the east towards downtown, across Wilshire and back up to Hollywood. Our flight took off on time and the pilot was more than helpful in pointing out the major landmarks and celeb homes. I have lived in LA all my life, and it was still a thrill to be close enough to catch them working on the Hollywood sign, to see the familiar attractions on the Universal lot and to view the stretches and stretches of recognizable roads, freeways and towns I have so frequently crossed. Highrises from downtown, Century City, Wilshire Corridor and Hollywood sprung from a land of smaller buildings, homes and the occasional reservoir. I am no follower of who and what lives in posh areas of town, but the lavish acres of Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg - to name a few - raised eyebrows for sure! The tour was only about 25 minutes, but felt much longer. My only regret was having not done this sooner. Loved every second, and would not hesitate to return. The pilot was very friendly, as was the front desk receptionist/cart driver/assistant. The bare office was minimal and - yes - there were only the two people working. They had back to back flights, so if you are on time, you will wait and the office clerk will take you in the cart to their helicopter as it lands with the prior party, and you get in the helicopter as a passenger leaves, one at a time. It takes time for the helo to stop and start up again. The party after us was late, so we had to stay in the helo an extra several minutes for it to stop. Watching a helo "brake" by the way, was interesting. ;) The office itself is a little difficult to find. After you make a left onto Osborne from San Fernando Road, make the THIRD left onto Airpark Way (past the Fire Station). Keep driving up the loop until halfway up, you will see the sign for Adventure Helicopters. They have a code to get into the gate to park, which they should provide when you make the reservation. Hope you enjoy the ride as much as we did. :)
