There is a small admission fee for the collection tour but be sure to also visit the free public museum across the street afterwards. The collection and the museum are across the street from each other. The collection has the cars and a lovely restored train that is available to enjoy when the docent are giving a tour. The docents are wonderful, most are volunteers! So many cars, with information available next to the exhibit! Beautiful and interesting This special collection and museum were closed during the California shut-down related to the Covid19 virus, several types of events - movies, concerts and more are just starting again! The entire Nethercutt museum and collection has specific hours and tour times. I understand why now- it is beautiful, unique and so very inspiring. While I love the museum and the cars on the first two floors of the collection tour. The 3rd and 4th floors are completely boring. The unfortunate thing is we were rushed through the best cars in the collection and forced to go up stairs. Once we get to the 4th floor the old lady talked for what felt like an hour. The organ concert was enjoyable after she stopped talking. Would I come again, absolutely. However I would advise to make sure you get around all the cars as they will force you upstairs after 40 mins or so. read more

Another spectacular Yelp find. I brought my entire family. We took the 4 floor guided tour and spent some time at their second collection across the street. Kyle Irwin (curator and master technician) did a fantastic job of explaining the entire collection with enthusiasm, humor and abundant knowledge. Classic vehicles and antique musical instruments are the primary focus. But you'll also see very nice clocks, dolls, trophies, furniture and chandeliers. The entire collection and interior design on all 4 floors was exquisite. Almost every museum that invites thousands of total strangers onto their private property generates some kind of revenue from the public or local government. But not here. Both admission and parking are free. And you won't see any donation boxes nor tip jars. An absolute hidden gem in southern Los Angeles! Be sure to take your family (sons/daughters, grandkids), and friends (in town or out of town) visit this museum! We did it yesterday and enjoyed both self-guided and guided tours tremendously. You should allow 4 hours for fun! It has a huge parking lot next to the museum. All cars are exquisitely restored to their original form and functionally drivable automobiles. Every year each car will be taken out of the museum for a joy ride in town, onto the highway, and drive through! 1) Go online to reserve your tickets for the free 2-hour guided tour on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday at 10 am or 1:30 pm. 2) Be sure to spend an extra two hours before or after and visit the other building (free to roam around) and the train. 3) In the last part of the guided tour, go to the 4th floor - music room, grab a sofa, just sit back and enjoy the music while relaxing your legs and toes. It was just heavenly enjoyable! The organ music was just amazing! 4) Bonus: it is FREE! 5) You can also check out other events on the website for silent movies and organ music! 6) The gentleman who is the curator of the museum is an absolutely awesome and very knowledgeable tour guide. Awesome Collection. Great Tour Guide. Incredible History. The history of the Nethercutt family never ceases to amaze me. The facility is just incredible, certain elements are just breathtaking. The Tour Guide and Curator are so well informed as are the volunteer docents. You're able to get up close and personal with everything. Functional Art. If you have the time book a tour, all tours are guided there are no self guided tours. Tour length is 2 hours and there are stairs and lots of walking. For those of you with kids, kids MUST be 10 years or older there are no exceptions. You're able to take AS MANY pics as you want BUT NO FLASH NO FLASH NO FLASH this includes NO FLASH on your cell phones. NO FLASH and NO FLASHLIGHTS. I can't tell you how many times they stopped the tour to tell someone about their f'n flash. Annoying. You'll learn the history of the automobile, but also so so so much more. The also have a private personal locomotive on display that you can view from the outside and also from the inside. The museum which is different from the collection does afford you the opportunity for a self guided tour. The museum houses about 100 class and historic vehicles that can be viewed during operational hours without a reservation. The collection requires a reservation and is two hours but well worth it. Sadly the two hours flies by when the tour is over you don't want to leave. If you're a fan of cars this is a must see and a must do. If you're not a fan of cars, you'll still enjoy for the history. Not to fret there's more to this place than meets the eye so if you don't like cars they have you covered with all the other wonders that are contained within this off the beaten path find. I love this place! I can't believe it's free you just need to make a reservation. I agree it's longer than it needs to be but I appreciate things like this! They have the most iconic Duesenberg car here it's gorgeous!! They don't make them like they used to. I took my 13 year old son and his friend and they enjoyed it. You can sit on any of the fancy chairs during the tours so take advantage of that. Our guide was nice and very informative. I'm planing on returning with family and friends. read more

This place was recommended to my fiancé and I by our landlord who actually was buddies with JB Nethercutt in his early years. We called and made an appointment for a Saturday tour and took my finances father here for his 65th birthday. I expected to see a showroom filled with classic cars but was beyond blown away at all the other collectibles, musical pieces and different makes of cars included in this collection. We had two tour guides whose main jobs are to research the history of each car and musical piece in the collection to make sure they are restored historically correct and make sure they stay running properly. Knowledgeable is an understatement when describing these two. It was so cool to see the passion they had and absorb all the knowledge they shared about each piece. I wish I could remember their names... But the lady wore glasses and the gentleman was bald. :) There are three floors in the collection. The main floor is the grand showroom which has rotating cars so you may see different models if you come multiple times. The second floor is filled with various collectibles (hood ornaments, trophies, porcelain dolls). The third floor (my favorite) is the musical floor. I don't want to give away too much about this floor because it's quite an experience to walk into when you have no expectations of what you will see/hear. But, it was an entertaining and amazing experience on that third floor. You gotta see it!!! Also, grandmas and grandpas would enjoy this tour because there are a lot of nostalgic and rare musical instruments that I am sure would put smiles on their faces once they heard again. I will be coming back with my grandma soon! The only drawback about the tour is that there isn't enough time allowed to explore each floor of the collection. There are so many things to look at!! After the tour, you can head next door to check out the Merle Norman cosmetics store or head across the street to the actual Museum (no appointment required) to see MORE cars! There is also a train caboose behind the museum that was restored to its historic origins (interior decor and all!) that was an added bonus to be able to walk through. I returned for a Nethercutt Collection tour for the first time in probably a decade, and it was as much fun to return as it was to experience it the first time. I brought two friends who agreed it is truly a hidden gem in Southern California. I can't imagine stumbling upon this place. Staff were friendly and really seem to love their jobs. They enjoyed answering questions and giving us a closer look at the cars and instruments. The collection might not be anything I personally would collect if I had such means, but it's fascinating to behold. Even to a non-car-lover, the vehicles are impressive. It was a great look at [luxury] automotive history. The musical instrument machines are strange but impressive, even if you don't enjoy their sound. This is my second time at the Nethercutt in a month. The first time I just went to the museum. The second time I went, I made reservations to see the collection. When I read the vitriolic review from a guy named Bob on Google dated 7/6/11 I thought to myself "Well, there's two sides to every story." But now after taking the tour, I kinda have to agree with him just a wee bit. In a nutshell: the collection is truly lovely, but the employees are extremely rude. The place is not kid friendly as stated but the problem is: everybody is treated like a child. Want to feel young again? Nethercutt is a fountain of youth! The curator of the collection that led the tour talked to us like we were 4 years old. She even required us to raise our right hand and repeat after her that we wouldn't touch the cars, turn on the radio, kick the tires, sit on the fenders, etc. Now, I'll sign a waiver and agree not to touch these classic cars but I won't raise my hand and make this ridiculous promise because it's just extremely condescending. She said it as if to say she were joking but you know she was serious. It makes you wonder what her average visitor is like that makes her contempt so obvious. The only employee that seemed cool was the fixer dude that managed the mechanical music device collection. He seemed to have a passion for his work and it showed. He really gave a great presentation on the items on display and lord knows how many times he's had to repeat his spiel. But like I said: he's cool and super informative. Oh, and what that guy Bob said on Google is true: I got yelled at by the sweaty morbidly obese security guard, too. He told me I could not come into the museum with my mono-pod although there were other folks on the premises shooting photos with tripods. Maybe the policy changed because like I said, I was here last month and took pictures using my mono-pod and it was no problem at that time. It's a classic situation where you put a person in uniform and suddenly they act like they're Gawd or something. He was a real douche. I mean, I literally was just shooting pictures, minding my own business when he just came at me. I'm OK if the policy has changed but there's no reason to yell at me. Just say it in a calm way and I'll comply. Instead, I just left. At any rate, this is a first class collection marred by a bunch of rude employees. To be fair, these folks have to deal with the public day in and day out and they're showcasing really rare and valuable items so maybe visitors can be really ridiculous at times. Who knows? I'd say it's worth the visit but just don't piss the staff off or you'll be sorry. read more

I wish I would've read the review by Glamourbomb S. prior to going. Hated the control freak lady who dragged us through the first 2 floors of awesome autos and bored us on the 3rd floor. Loved the nice guy who did the music tour on the 4th level but, personally, I hated the 3rd and 4th floor tours. Which is a tour of tons of collectibles and music history. My back hurt from stand for 2 hours. I wanted to leave so bad, It was horrible. I will say that my nephew's girlfriend said that she liked the 3rd and 4th floors the best but, the tour was so long that she was really tired. And she's 21. Yes, the first 2 floors of autos were cool. They have the DeLorean "Back to the Future" car here. So, after you see the cars...leave. It's very hard to continue to stand for 2 hours especially, if you were at the museum first. There were about 50 people in the tour and EVERYONE was struggling. read more

The date of this review is February 28, 2015. We decided to take our 11 & 12 years old grand children to the Nethercutt Collection. The Museum features antique cars and a restored locomotive. We toured the museum looking at every automobile. There were over 100 cars in the museum. The grand children were fascinated with the Bugatti cars. After two hours of touring inside, museum officials offered an outside tour featuring a locomotive and a restored car. Admission to the Nethercutt Collection was free and so was parking. I am sure not if they allowed photo taking. I did not ask. We all had a great afternoon and everyone in my family enjoyed the Nethercutt Collection. We will be back to enjoy it again. read more

The tour takes place in a commercial building, but man it was awesome. The 2nd floor looked just like money, but my favorite was the 3rd floor where the music boxes were. Impressive museum of vintage/antique cars. Make a reservation to see the musical collection across the street, because it is only open during limited viewing hours. Unfortunately they kind of whisk you through and book a lot of visitors so you may not get to see everything that you are interested in BUT it is free to the public so you can return in the future for repeated viewings. One is on their feet for a long time and I felt bad for the elderly that made up for most of the group, but they do offer limited elevator service to travel up and down the four floors of the building and by the finale, most of the visitors were sitting on the furniture provided. My first Job was at the Arbavita, near LAX main office, as the mail girl. I knew Robert, Jack, Jackie designer, Elaine head of Franchise. I modeled for the franchise trainees and so, I gave manufacturing tours. Lunch was free I think, wonderful place to start working. Mini skirt days, 64 Chevy in the parking lot. I loved that job and came early, just to be able to walk by Merle Normans office, get my job done on time. ladies and I played card games after lunch, I was not a big card game person. I got an advance to the franchise dept. I did filing. Seeing the cars Gordon Maynard and the family drove across the country once a year will be a real treat. I have lived here 47 years and never been to the museum. Tomorrow will be the first, I'm sure of many.So many memories have come to me as I plan to attend. read more

WOW! And again ... WOW! I may not be an antique car buff, but who cannot be amazed at seeing over 100 cars in mint condition? When I say "mint" I really mean showroom new! This was like being in the 1920 and car shopping. Then they have the music collection. Although they have some stand-alone instruments like the 2 million dollar piano, most of them are nickelodeons (a full mechanical band that plays like a player piano). Everything is fully functional and they play them for the private tour. Downside: The curators who give the tours are way over qualified to walk people around and although they smile through their performance, they are not interactive or responsive. Frankly, I feel for them and don't hold it against the museum which after all is FREE. Tip: Only go if you have a reserved tour time or you can't go into the 4 story building that has all the best stuff. Spoiler Alert: The finally is finding out that when standing in the top floor you are really inside of one of the largest cinema pipe organs in the world. Then it plays .... ahhhhhh read more

First of all, it is essential to explain that you should see BOTH the Museum and the Collection. These are two DIFFERENT buildings, across the street from each other. Both are entirely free--and this is awesome! It is important to understand the differences in operation of them. The Museum has regular open hours, and you just walk around by yourself. The Collection is ONLY open by pre-booked guided tour (free). If you only show up on the spur of the moment you will only see the Museum and will miss the more important half of the experience. If you come from the freeway, the (free) parking lot will be beyond the museum and you have to enter it from the side street. The Museum is the 1-story warehouse, while the Collection is the 5-story building. The Museum is just a museum of vintage cars (plus a tiny exhibit out back of a train locomotive + railcar). But the Collection tour encompasses more than just cars spread out among its 4 floors of exhibits. Mr Nethercutt also had a passion for collecting musical instruments. So the Collection includes one of the world's fanciest theater organs, plus a number of other mechanical instruments, including extremely rare "reproducer pianos." But the prime focus here is ochestrions. Orchestrions, you say? These are mechanically playing organs. They have never been common in the US, but were found in Europe in the 1920s in fancy hotel ballrooms, etc. The tour lasts 2 hours, and we were guided by a wonderfully charming docent for all this. Expect large crowds--around 100 people were on our tour, but the guide manages this very well. The Collection (not the Museum) is also unique in that there are no velvet ropes around the cars--you can approach them closely, from all sides, though of course you are cautioned not to touch or handle them. The emphasis in the whole establishment is American family cars. And only cars; you won't find motorcycles, tri-wheelers, amphicars, trucks, etc. here. You also won't find racing cars, hot rods, custom cars, etc. By saying "family" of course one does not mean "affordable". Some of the cars are incredibly rare and expensive. You also won't find much of foreign cars. There is a very large collection of Rolls-Royces, plus a smaller selection of Mercedes. But no Ferraris, Maseratis, Citroens, Aston-Martins, etc. Not even Bentleys, which is curious, since they are so closely related to Rolls. Let me say again: You have to make sure you book to see the Collection. If you do, you will get a 5-star experience. If you don't, and just pop into the Museum, you will get a bit less. First off, I'd like to address the 2 bad reviews below. Nancy's back hurt. That should be self explanatory. glamourbomb ? Do I need to say anything else ? The over-texting, twittered, all-facade people need to steer clear of all museums displaying vintage and antique art, which of course includes automobiles. When this type of art is explained by a tour guide to this type of individual, I can't imagine keeping their attention for more than 20 minutes. Don't let people with short site discourage you from visiting the Nethercutt. Did I forget to mention the San Sylmar tour AND the self guided collection across the street were FREE to attend? . . . and these people are complaining. read more

Great tour. Don't know why I haven't been there before. Lived my whole like in Glendale (20 minute drive). The Curator was fantastic who is also a local. He knew the history of the cars, musical instruments, self playing musical equipment. It was fascinating. Everything there is in working condition. I am not a museum person but I loved this place. Amazing, and FREE! . I dont know much about cars, but the three people i took with me go to every car show they can. They said they had never seen such a beautiful collection. Yes it was a tad bit rushed, but i felt priveliged to see this private collection of cars. Every one of those cars and "music boxes" for lack of a better description was beautiful. Went here with my parents for Fathers Day. Perfect idea! The tour was well timed and interesting. It was amazing to see what was in the collection (cars, music boxes, instruments, etc) and hear about the history. Best part it was all free! Will definetely go again! read more
