Coming from Alberta, I always have liked the few flavors of syrup of Summerland Sweets I could find…read moreat a grocery store, but this place is like the ultimate jam and syrup destination! There are so many more flavors than just raspberry and blueberry, and more jams than I could count. When we visited we were stunned for a moment when we walked in, and we shopped for a long time. Along with all the fruit-flavored goodies there are so may cute home items and decor to look at, as well as ice cream (there was a busy line for this while we were shopping). Summerland Sweets is in the middle of a number of wineries and made for a great break from wine tasting (including wonderful clean public washrooms). This is now a mandatory stop when we visit the Summerland area, and my only regret is not going home with one of the 4L jugs of syrup!

We toured the area this time and bumped into Summerland sweets. What a great find! We walked in and found shelves and shelves of jam, fruit candies, pottery, fruit wines, and an ice cream counter in the back. Our group of 10 all stopped for an ice cream and we were so glad we did! They offer two types of cones and a bunch of different flavors of ice cream. The standard scoop is HUGE. The ice cream prices are very cheap (see photo) and the scoops are generous. The girls working the counter are very friendly and were super nice with our 4 seniors (all over age 85) who were trying to decide what to get. The cherry ice cream was a huge hit! There is also a wine tasting room where they serve fruit wines. The colors are beautiful and the wine tasting is free. We ended up with some fruit flavored candy for my husband to bring back to work (in Houston). We don't do a lot of touristy type things when we go to the Okanagan, so this was a wonderful place to stop, close to where we were staying. I highly recommend Summerland Sweets for a quick stop for ice cream, wine tasting, and gift shopping. If you love maple syrup or fruit syrup they sell that too!

So you are driving along, and really there isn't any real reason to stop in this small town, per…read morese... You would be incorrect for so many reasons, because in reality, there is one of the best reasons to stop here, this is it... the Hedley Country Market. Why we stopped, we needed a potty for our kiddo. Why we stayed, we discovered a place that was making fresh made Sausage rolls, and Pies... wait, what? Yes, made in house, with someone who actually cares about the way food should be made, without all the additives, is this small town market. First off, the place smells like a bakery, but it's not that, it's the hub for this old mining town.. which stopped mining like a century ago, but it's not empty, in fact there are people here who are as nice as one can be, this market serves up kindness and tasty food. Yes, they have all the normal pantry items, crisps/chips, and liquor, but the Gem of it is the kitchen. Honestly, I want to write a bunch more, and they would deserve every positive word written about them... but here's all you need to know, don't just drive past this town, or this shop. It's a great place to load up on something made in-house, that will have to writing home, in fact, this Yelp review proves that point. Highly Recommend.. and did I mention the Sausage Rolls?

Plus they sell booze. Stock up for all your camping foods plus treats for the kids. Lots of ambiance. Not many of these small town places left. Stop by for a treat and head back in time. Great service like it used to be. Plus alcohol sales!

In other words, it's…read more the same brand, but it's teensy weensy and you aren't completely sure it'll get you to your destination. This Whole Foods is a health food store, not a gourmet store; it's smaller than the smallest Whole Foods in Vancouver, which means it's less than a quarter the size of a "real" Whole Foods. If you're looking for a few specialty items that you can't get anywhere else, you may be in luck. There's a huge selection of vitamins, a good assortment of gluten-free and other specialty health food-type ingredients, and a very large bulk food department. What you won't find are the goodies that make the full-size Whole Foods so tempting, and so dangerous. Very few preprepared foods, and no salad bar. A very modest selection of cheese and meats. A selection of baked goods commendable mainly for offering wheat-free options. A couple of aisles' worth of boxed and canned goods. And one more note: we accidentally bought milk that was 3 days past its expiration date. So do check the dates on all purchases before hitting checkout.

The atmosphere is pleasant and I liked the produce. The place has a focus on local products, which is nice. It can be s bit pricey but it's your best bet for natural food in Penticton.
