Whenever we visit the in-laws, this is one of my first stops to stock up for the week. It's always busy, and when I visited this week, the line was 20 deep, just to get into the store! It's worth the wait! Love the nostalgia of the old meat counter where you pick what you want, they bag it up and take it to the counter for you. Prices are very reasonable. Loyal! I've been getting my meat here since I started shopping for myself. Over 40 years oh my! They offer fresh high quality meat. Their ground beef is always fresh not brown in the middle with fresh meat surrounding it like a local farm store in town. They also sell Chile, new crop beans, tortillas, cheese, milk and various other products for posole, menudo or tamales. Another plus is exceptional customer service! My family has been going here for decades and their food makes the best meals. This is the best meat market that I have ben to in the Albuquerque area. I went on the 30th of Dec for the first time and was amazed. I bought my tripe for my menudo and it was so clean and already cut up in small pieces. I have never seen that any where. All the meats looked amazing. Now the employees were outstanding in assisting and helping us. Even the cashier was so friendly, they made you feel that they welcomed and wanted your business. Nelson's is a well known local meat market in the South Valley of Albuquerue. It has such a good reputation, I know many people who will travel out of their way to pay them a visit. On my last visit, during the week, it was pretty mellow. Since it wasn't packed, a butcher took care of my mom and I right away. He was very happy and attentive. About the butcher shop: Easily the best value on meats in the city, Nelson's was my go-to for years when I lived in Barelas. As a general rule, Albuquerque doesn't have many old school, take-a-number-what-can-I-getcha meat markets (probably due to massive grocery chains) and this one simply wins, friendly employees, probably the best cook-yourself carne adovada around, and nah, don't expect a big fish/seafood selection. About the green chile roasting: "Nelson's Meats." "Hi, I'm wondering if you still have chile?" "Um, not sure. Probably not. I'll have to check. You need to understand, the owner is kinda bipolar." "..." "Sounds like we do. What do you want?" This was my fourth Tuesday call to Nelson's, each previous call telling me to call next week, maybe they'd have some. I'd planned to do what I do every year, get it from some local stand, but a homegirl told me Nelson's was the way to go, because they roasted the peppers on a pizza oven conveyor belt, ensuring the easiest peeling possible. This was news worth waiting for. Every year I peel and seed my chilies immediately (some people don't) before baggin' 'em up, to make for easy defrosting throughout the year. This process can run literally five hours, for just one bag. Was homegirl telling the truth? For sure. As shown in my photos, the conveyor system is WAY better than the typical propane fired approach -- for the most part, the casing fell right off. I shaved a good two hours off the usual peeling session. The chile's good, not terrific, the Hot variety's a little timid. $40 a sack, no red chile available, but in the end well worth the wait and the psychoanalysis of Boss Nelson. read more

They are well known for all their special cuts and the quick pick hamburgers. What they are not as well know. For us their chili. My Mother in Law I sissy on ordering, yes ordering her green chili from Nelson's. Off we went one Saturday morning to pick it up. I've been looking for a good butcher shop in town and I have found it. Walking in the place was packed and I told myself I was glad I called ahead to pick up my 25 lb meat package. The workers behind the counter where moving around like a colony of ants - at first there seemed to be no rhyme or reason, but sitting there waiting for my order to come it was evident every move was done for a reason and other patrons where getting there small orders quickly. This place so much reminds me of growing up and going to the local butcher shop on the weekends to get a fresh cut of beef. This has to be the best Butcher Shop in Albuquerque. Located on the West Side on Old Coors Rd. It's a shop full of long time locals. It was packed on a Saturday morning. This is an Albuquerque business because of the abundance of Red Chili and local spices. They have an entire line of spices that they have blended. My Butcher was Ben, he might have been part of the family business, however, He was extremely helpful in teaching me about the various ways to buy, cut and cook Protein. I am now an expert on the Pork Butt. I tried some 85/15 ground beef and a couple of pounds of Carne Adovada. Ben told me they make 5 to 10 Gallons of Red Chili everyday. When you arrive at Nelson's, you grab a ticket so customers are helped in the order they arrived. They have a wide selection of raw and prepared (marinated type) meats. They have bags of dried & roasted chilies, tortillas, bread, cheeses, and various other food items. Whenever I want to have a good steak dinner, I buy my ribeye steaks at Nelson's. You can't beat the price & quality. Their meats are natural-no antibiotics & fresh. On one occasion, when I went in for my ribeye, they didn't have the cut that I wanted, so the butcher actually went in the back to cut my steaks right off of the rib roast. Same great service when I bought skirt steak from them. I was disappointed to find out that they don't carry veal but I understand their explanation-they wouldn't sell enough to keep it fresh. Oh my Albuquerqur! We do have a first class meat market,Nelson's meats. Called Nelson's to get our prime rib ordered for Christmas. My wife talked to Larry Nelson, owner. Wanted to know when would be the best time to order the rib. He told us the sooner the better. They do run out the closer it gets to Christmas. We saddled up and headed out. When we got there (about 11:00) there were a fair amount of customers already in the store. We took a number and as organized they are, it didn't take long at all to be called. Fortunately we got Larry. He must of spent 40 mins with us making sure we got the rib we needed. Everything from how large of one to the best rib numbers to get. Asked him what he felt the best seasoning to use. Told us what he uses in detail and then offered to have it seasoned for us at no extra cost. Awesome. We originally went to get the rib ordered but with the wonderful selection of meats, ended up with 10 lb's 85% lean hamburger ($2.98 lb), 10 lb's ham ($2.79 lb), which Larry cut the exact way we wanted and picked up a roast to slow cook. We had to back off or we would of gone crazy. Everyone there wa so awesome including the young man that carried our goodies to our car. I can't wait to try all the other cuts, especially this summer when we fire the BBQ and smoker up again. It about a 20 min drive for us, but so very well worth it!
