Having had a great experience with Nelson Pools in the past, I was confident in their ability to deliver a quality service. However, this time, my experience was quite different. Here's a detailed account of the issues I encountered. * I asked Shawn Nelson (owner) to work with an audio/visual company I hired to install speakers around the pool. Shawn told me his trenching team would save me money by making (a few) trenches for the audio cable. o The trenches were never dug. The audio/visual contractor laid the lines, regardless. During Nelson's electrical hook-up of the pool, several of the audio lines were cut. One large bolt of wire is missing, and the audio company had to add multiple hours of labor to triage the damage. o After multiple calls and failure to show up on more than one occasion, the excavator finally showed up (late) well after the pool was filled with water. * We ordered bullnose tile to go around the pool for safety; my dog got injured on the flagstone they used in the first pool Nelson built for us; a freak accident (but I'd rather be safe for a small upcharge). The bullnose tile is an upgrade of about $1500. o They put down the wrong tile. o I was refunded the money and told Shawn Nelson we would live with it; we did NOT want the edge ground off by hand (an option Shawn offered). o Several weeks later, during another phase of construction, one of the laborers ground down part of the edge (about a 2-foot section). I was home to stop him, but he didn't speak English. The grinding stopped after Shawn Nelson called the work crew. The pool (now filled with water) had sharp rocks and dust piled up on the bottom (that I had to clean). The area that was ground down is obviously thinner and looks out of place. * We ordered deck lighting to be installed in the concrete patio around the pool, which is another upcharge. o They did not put the lighting in. Shawn's excuse was, "oops, we missed that" * When it was time to fill the pool and have the chemicals added and cycled by the pumps, we discovered the electrical system was never installed. Nelson Pools didn't know that the electrical work was not complete. * The pool lights did not work o Their electrician did not wire them to the correct amperage. * I ordered a pool pump-powered vacuum to be included with the pool package. Nelson Pools delivered the wrong one. I did not want an electrical wire from our home to the pool. We have a young child at home. o It took weeks to get the vacuum after multiple unanswered calls and text messages. * Nelson Pools gives their customers a professional pool technician to service the pool for a month; after the 4th week the pool was still green with algae. * Nelson Pools installed a gas-powered firepit next to the pool. I can't use it because a key for the firepit was not ordered, it was on backorder, or for another reason. * Swimming pools have plumbing that leads away from the pool in case of overfilling. The pipe for the drain is shown on the pool schematic leading to the street. o Nelson Pools did not extend that pipe to the street. Instead, they laid the pipe about 20 feet from the pool against my fence and neighbor's yard. I don't know what will happen when we get bad Texas-sized rain. * I have been asking for my HOA's virtual mock-up of the pool. Shawn Nelson did not have access to it; only his son (Trey) works on the computer. His son has a terrible time returning calls or text messages. I still don't have it. Shawn is a nice guy but not well-organized. This pool cost me nearly 100k, and I was a return customer. I expected the same service we had the first time; that did not happen. read more

We had a pool in a state of disrepair. We reached out to a friend who recommended James with Nelson pools. We contacted James and he was very accommodating and helpful in getting things squared away to have the pool re-plastered. The pool plastering team did a great job and the pool looked great. We also decided to purchase new filtration equipment as the old equipment was not properly sized for the pool and it was also in poor condition. The plumbers came to install the new pump and filtration system, but only did the plumbing portion and they left the old pump setting in place still connected to the existing electrical. Another team from Nelson pools came out to install the new light. This team went above and beyond to get the new light working as there was some electrical issues they had to resolve but no one ever came out to electrically connect the new pump. I had to do it myself. We were refilling the pool so the start up could be completed. I contacted James to ask him when that would occur and if someone would show us how to use the new equipment that we paid thousands of dollars for. I was told this would be an additional $200 As we have never owned a pool, and I wanted to make sure that we were taking care of it in the proper way, I agreed. I called Nelson pools and verified that startup was included in the plaster process. They informed me that the $200 was for "pool school" The pool was full on Monday. I attempted to start the pump, but this pump does not work without a controller. I reached out to James and he offered to sell us a controller for $400 plus installation. I purchased a controller on Amazon and installed it myself. The the pool had been full and ready for start up for three days when Koby Carr was supposed to show us how to use our equipment and complete the start up. He called one hour before he was supposed to arrive to inform us that he was not going to be able to make it. We reschedule and he picked the date and time, and we moved things around to accommodate his visit. He was a no call no show. When we reached out he said sorry, I meant to text you. At this point, we reached out to Nelson pools and found out that Koby Carr does not work for them although he is the son-in-law of Sean the owner. They said that if he did not arrive for his scheduled appointment on Friday that they would send their own representative. When Koby arrived on Friday, he was on a phone call with Sean the owner and then Sean soon called me. He was highly concerned about the negative reviews that we had left and wanted to set things right. He offered to compensate us for the cost of the controller we purchased and I felt like this is a step in the right direction to repair the negative experience we had had. He offered to do whatever he could, to have us remove our negative reviews. Koby then completed our pool school, which was more of an education on the relationships at Nelson pools. Apparently, Sean and James had a falling out and he was also on the out with his wife, which happens to be the daughter of Sean. Our pool start up and school was a very educational experience. I just wish it consisted of how to actually care for our pool and equipment. In an effort to make things right, Koby said that he would not accept payment for pool school. Half an hour later and regretting his statement he then asked for $100 and then 15 minutes later $50 stating he just wanted things to be fair. I ended up paying him the full $200 just to be done with it. Words cannot convey what a horrible experience I have had in dealing with Nelson pools and being wrapped up into their personal relationship problems. Here are my questions: As a customer why would you even talk to me about your personal relationships? Why is education on how to use equipment purchased from you not included in the purchase? Why would you have a third-party represent you? why would the electrical connections not be completed? Why would you ask me what you can do to make it right? Do what you feel is right. read more

so after going through the hideous process of building a home, we wanted a easy experience with our pool build. After a few bids and a few more no shows we struck gold with Nelson pools. Travis came to give us a bid and within two days we had a drawing and a video of what our pool would look like. With no doubt we signed a contract and on July 5th they began the process and within 7 weeks we were swimming. We were ready for our first built in pool and visited with several pool builders. Nelson was the frost we talked to, and we ended up going with them. Zero regrets! Pool was ready for swimming a month after signing (weather helped). Shawn made us feel comfortable and helped us make practical decisions with the design. It turned out gorgeous! A Nelson pools rep came to our house for measurements then we went to the office to pick materials and sort out cost. That was the last contact we had. No one ever followed up to see if we were interested in moving forward. After a month or two I called the office to see what the deal was. I left a voice mail because no one answered at 10am on a Friday (weird). The person who listened to my voice mail called to say she wanted to let me know she got my voice-mail and would speak to Trey then call me back after discussing with him. It has been several days and I have not heard back. I appreciated the office personnel calling to say they received my VM and I am guessing they are not the issue. We were told when we were at their store that they could start in 3 weeks which was much sooner than any other pool builders were saying. I guess now I know why. It is hard to fill up your schedule when you don't actually call customers back. read more

I would leave a zero if I could. Stay far away from this company! We pretty much managed the job ourselves. Jobs had to be done multiple times and they even forgot to connect the drainage out to the street. The owner literally told us we needed to expect that and that they had 'other jobs' - he was extremely rude. We started this process in April - the final inspector came out to inspect the pool in October but the problem was the pool was not completed and the other inspections for electric, plumbing, etc. were never done! We are still waiting for the final inspection and it is January. They need to take the 'God Bless You' off of their voicemail. read more

Installed an inground pool less then 6 months ago. The owner of the home sold it. Nelson pools is less then helpful with questions or details. Installed a natural gas pool heater knowing full well the unit needed to be propane. Would never use them. They wanted to do pool service. If they cant answer questions why would I hire them to do anything more. Buyer beware. read more

I hired this company at the suggestion of a friend that recently had a Pool installed by them. I really wish out of read the yelp reviews before I did. A Couple months ago we noticed a crack in our deck that ran from the edge of the deck all the way to the flagstone no telling how long it had been there But the pool itself is only 14 months old. After trying to contact the contractor and leaving voicemails someone finally called me back a few weeks later sent someone out to look at it and then told me my warranty was expired at one year. Then they told me they would have somebody contact me to see if there's anything they can do to help me but I may be sending their concrete person over and not charging me as much But that never happened ultimately I hired another pool remodeler repair person to come and fix it. Also after several calls in the past trying to figure out where my overflow drain was connected to because it would take several days for my water level to go down after a heavy rain we discovered that they didn't know where it was connected to because it wasn't connected to anything it just has to soak into the ground.. which is why it takes so long anyways I wouldn't recommend this company to anyone.. read more

I called this pool company for a quote to build a pool for my new home. The person showed up to measure my yard, but never gave me a return phone call or quote. I ended up calling them back and asking what happen to my quote and still nothing happen. I am confused by a company that says they build pools and pride themselves on customer satisfication and they have this kind of customer service. They said they have been in business since 1968, but they do not conduct the company as such. Plus I find it odd that there are no reviews on the internet for a company that has been in business this long. Is it something in the air in Houston where these companies conduct themselves like this. Are they not concerned about their reputation or do they have so much business, that they don't need people's money. Just odd to me...I would not conduct business with them. If they are like this before they get your money; what is it like when they have your money? Also, I should note that this is a family business, so complaining to them is useless. read more
