She didn't know we had been driving so long & kindly let us come in & still eat. The host was so kind & the food was prepared so fast! She didn't rush us when we were eating, & wanted to make sure we were full & happy! We appreciate their kindness especially during COVID. Affordable & so yummy! After a long drive from the twin cities and touring the Laura Ingalls Wilder museum my sister and I were ready for some food and drink.... We went to Nellie's. We walked in and waited to be greeted or seated and got neither. The bartender was too busy chatting with a co-worker and after 5 mins of standing there we sat ourselves. The table and salt/pepper containers were sticky and we had no one providing menus or drinks. We waited and waited. We looked to see if we needed to order at a window or something but there was another table of ladies with drinks in our area appearing to be served. We tried to go back up front looking confused and searching for menus. We were ignored the whole time. We gathered our stuff and headed directly out the door. No one ever spoke to us. I was looking forward to the French dip. We had to eat gas station sandwiches on our trip back to Mankato. read more

Although we intended to only do dessert, based on other reviews we got an order of the hand-cut fries. For $2.95 they were tasty, but the serving size was very small. It was about one large potato worth of fries. I expected a larger basket. The pie was awful. It tastes like it had freezer-section, ready-made crust (certainly without butter or lard). If it was homemade crust I would not advertise as such as it would be an embarrassment. The blueberry filling also tasted like it was from a can. They did not use fresh or even fresh-frozen blueberries and I can't imagine that the filling could be made in house. The coconut custard was so-so but had the same terrible crust. The "sundae" was a small single scoop of vanilla in a plastic cup with a little bit of topping drizzled on top for just under $3. Not good and very cheap! Lastly, something was going on with our waitress and the owner. The waitress was trying to keep it together but she was visibly crying. It appeared she was reprimanded in the back as we heard something going on and another customer (who was seated closer to the action) also noticed and was reassuring her that she was doing a good job (which she was--perhaps a little new but was being very sweet and helpful). The ironic thing is that this is exactly what I would expect if the "Nellie" from the TV show was running a restaurant: skimpy portions, cheap ingredients, and a hostile work environment. Such a cute cafe. They were kind to my grandma and I, and didn't seem bothered that I had to shout to have her hear me. One of the staff knew my Grandma and stopped by to say hello. We even got to see one little girl in her "Little House on the Prairie" bonnet. Good food, kind staff. read more

After a long journey to Walnut Grove and a disappointing visit to a town that little resembles any real historical resemblance to "Little House on the Prairie", my friend and I stopped by this lovely place for locals for a piece of pie. In this case it was two! The waitstaff was a very friendly woman and the cafe was casual and quiet. I ordered some sort of Rhubarb and custard creation which phenomenal!!! Nothing absurdly large or showy if that's what your into, but the pie itself was delicious! The rhubarb was locally picked and fresh, and the recipe was the owners. After your standard diner hamburger, it was on to pie #2; some sort of chocolate "Reesees pieces" melted insanely sweet homemade pie. It too was delicious and made me feel like I was back at the "Founders Day" pie tasting contest in Season #1 of Little House. Thanks for the great time and great pie! My one little critique would be to invest in a larger sign for the street. We did not know you were even there had it not been for Yelp! I bet you more people would be able to taste your delicious pies if you did so. Thanks again for making my "Little House" dreams come true! read more

We ventured in after a visit to the museum. It was just 20 minutes til closing time but the staff made us feel welcome and reassured us not to feel rushed. Cute local family run cafe to stop by for lunch. It is what it advertises, "homestyle" meals. Burgers are the main attractions here. There were at least 12 different Burgers to choose from. You could also choose various potato sides, from tater-tots, to sweet potato fries, to seasoned wedge fries. I enjoyed the meal thoroughly. Great burgers and potato wedges. I loved the food , but the cust service is something that is lacking here.The waitress just tossed the silverware on the table. Didn't bother explaining anything. And didn't smile once. Good onion rings crunchy and fresh. 2nd person, fish and chips the fish was very dry and over cooked. Pre packed tarter sauce. The fries were fresh and crunchy. 3rd person chicken fried steak and gravy that needed ketchup to have flavor. This place was a classic of example of missed-out potential. You'd think with the Little House on the Prairie museum across the way and the restaurant's moniker, they would try to be at least a little more creative in decor, themes, and menu items. Other than a few autographed pics of some of the LHOP actors hanging on a wall, it seemed like little if any effort had been made to capitalize on its proximity to all things Laura Ingalls Wilder. If I were Alison Arngrim (who played Nellie on the TV show), I'd want to sit down with the owner and say, "Let's talk about a couple ways we could add some pizzazz to this place..." That said, if you simply take the restaurant at its face value -- a small-town family restaurant where locals sit around and jawjack during their morning coffee breaks -- then it is probably about as good as things get in this part of Minnesota. I had the pizza burger, which wasn't bad, but also lacked anything memorable. Yeah, the waitress was grim and no-nonsense and acted a little stressed out by the presence of our 4- and 1-year-old, but you'll have that. Apparently I should have tried the pie. We were in Walnut Grove and decided to stop in for a bite to eat. I ordered a hamburger and my husband ordered the special - 1/3 burger with "homemade" potato salad. We split an order of fries. My husband had coffee and I had ice water. There were 2 other couples in the restaurant. The hamburgers were great. The fries were wilty, not crisp. The "homemade" potato salad had a suspicious chemical flavor. My husband had to walk up twice to get his own cofee refill while the waitress had lunch. The water tasted really metallic. The burgers were really underwhelming (gas station quality). Fries were soggy and tasteless. We stopped here on our way through Walnut Grove. We had eaten here before and found the food to be good on our first visit. Our second visit was just ok. Our daughter ordered the Chicken Wrap and said it was delicious, and I ordered the Frisco Burger which was also tasty. However, our fries were a bit on the greasy side. Not that thrilled with the fries that we received. My husband ordered the daily Commercial special and he said it was okay. Overall, it was ok but not fantastic food, but the atmosphere of the small town cafe is always a welcome sight. We did enjoy browsing the wall of autographed photos the cafe had on display of the stars of the "Little House on the Prairie" TV series that had visited the real Walnut Grove. One word of warning is the restrooms are VERY small here. Would be very difficult for anyone with a handicap to use these restrooms and there is virtually no room for diaper changes of small children.
