My elder daughter found this when we planned a day trip to the leaning tower of Pisa. There were a bunch of locals and some tourists at lunch time. The lady who took our order was very cheerful and took pains to explain the Italian-only menu. We ordered some prosecco and they proceeded to cool it in a bucket, while they served the appetizers: The shrimp was crispy and you can eat the skin, sauce was delicious. My grilled Seafood platter was an incredible value, I had salmon, squid, a large prawn, skate and some branzino, with some vegetables. The branzino filet (they call it sea bass) with olives was also quite tasty, as well as the gnocchi in pesto. The only one we didn't like so much was the sliced steak, which was just okay (still, not bad for . I guess here one should order seafood. The gentlemen proprietor offered us the digestif Amaro, which had a very interesting taste and really rounded out the meal. Definitely recommended for lunch or dinner.

For the meat, we took the variety of meat with racket. Very good quality price, very close to the train station in Pisa, with a good taste of italian food.

They were preparing fresh pasta for us and there was a little bit of a delay. We didn't mind. Didn't seem much of a delay really, compared to any other restaurant in Italy. We did appreciate the attentiveness. When we received our pasta dishes (pasta alla crudaiola and a funghi pasta of some sort), we were blown away by how good it tasted! Absolutely fresh, delicious pasta! We divided our dishes in half and each share. Wow, it was great! Prices here are less than 10 euros for most everything. Big portions. Great people running this restaurant -- my impression is that its a "mom and pop" type of outfit. We ate outside, on a platform in several parking spots on the road. We almost left, since we had walked past several fancier restaurants with traditional outdoor seating. So glad that we stayed!! I would absolutely recommend this to anyone going to Pisa! It's about halfway between the leaning tower of Pisa and the Pisa train station -- on the train station side of the river -- 5 mins from the Pisa train station. You MUST come here!! The proprietors are so nice too!

Osteria del Porton Rosso however had 3 tables filled, so we were hesitant about its authenticity/flavoring. While they spoke very little English, we got by enough to order wine and food. Their clam pasta for example was good but nothing to write home about. They also charged a lot for aqua (like many other restaurants) so we went the Italian way and got wine instead. I didn't quite understand why they wouldn't take credit cards (when their front door had stickers of all major CCs accepted). Of course they tried to explain to us in Italian, but it's somewhere between the credit card machine is broken or they decided we should pay cash as tourists. Don't go out of your way to come here, because there are much better and visible Italian restaurants in the area.

We asked two people to help us find it and the second woman actually had to physically walk us there. But it was in our guidebook so we were determined! This place was absolutely empty at noon on a Friday. We were a little embarrassed to be there! It looks like it'd be a wonderful place on a busy evening, quite romantic atmosphere with lots of red in the decor, but a bit funny in the middle of the day! They had a lunch special which was very affordable. Seafood is a highlight here. The pasta with clams was outstanding, the best version of it I've ever had! We had a seafood main that I think was some sort of squid-esque fish, but it was wonderful, delicately sauced, and served with very well-cooked vegetables. Lunch special claimed to offer dessert for both of us but she didn't offer it - we were probably too full for it anyway! They do have decaf espresso, and she didn't give us a judgey face for ordering it (sorry, we don't drink caffeine, I know that's shocking in Italy!) Worth a stop for seafood. I'd give it a try during dinner, or maybe lunch during the busy season. Lunch in February and you'll probably be dining alone!
