So, I'm lying on the couch early on a Saturday morning trying to determine whether to get more sleep or to go get donuts. Cut 30 minutes later and I was at NC Donut Star ordering a dozen of what looked to be delicious, and huge, donuts. There was one person working the counter and she did a good job describing the different selections, and let me tell you some of the donuts looked "out there." There was even a donut with what looked like Cinnamon Toast Crunch on top of it. Intriguing but maybe not something I would order. The donuts in the middle of the display window can be filled with any of a variety of creams, custards, and jellies. However I think they do themselves a disservice by limiting the ones that can be filled. The donuts on the sides of the display are "as is." I ended up getting two each of maple bacon, s'mores, lemon filled, raspberry filled, Bavarian cream, and a couple with a toasted coconut/caramel/chocolate topping. Delicious and large doughnuts including filled to order! They have two styles of donut, light and airy glazed (with many many types of frosting and toppings), and light and airy glazed shells to be filled with a variety of filling choices (the shells come in glazed and glazed with chocolate frosting). There are no cake doughnuts, either regular or chocolate (so no chocolate cake glazed, one of my go to's). This is my first time being in a doughnut shop which fills doughnuts to order; they have the following fillings (and maybe more): custard, vanilla cream, raspberry jelly, strawberry jelly, apple jam, lemon. The person at the counter was polite, not too talkative, but patient with a first timer to the shop. The shop was clean and tidy. I didn't look closely at the pricing before I ordered a dozen doughnuts, 6 mixed glazed and 6 mixed filled, which came out to be about $25, which I felt was quite high. It turns out that each category of doughnut has a different price. Also I'm not sure what happens when you mix less expensive and more expensive categories in a box of a dozen, so be sure to inquire and look at the menu on the wall if you're price sensitive. the north side of town has been a doughnut desert for as long as I can remember... yeah a person could go to the gas station and play 'press your luck pastries' but there are too many ways to lose. thankfully someone has put an end to the madness :-) NC Donut Star just opened across from the giant moose on east plaza drive and has a promising future. bright and clean and inviting with a fair selection of hole foods and fillables on display. not the largest case of baked goods but there's someone in back who keeps it full of fresh deliciousnesses which is mostly even better. kind of in and out today getting things done before work but it looks like the usual fare (which is generally a good thing (unless maybe kolaches?)) I got a cereal topped frosted and a toasted coconut glazed plus some prizes on top when I peeked in the sack! mmmm donut seeds... all of it light and fluffy despite the ridiculousness of temp and humidity and none of the odd drama of old oil. if I lived nearer here I'd be here. back in for a box of random-ish donuts... got a cookie-and-cream, chocolate M&M, and five each choco-frosted and powdered sugar buns filled-to-order with creme, chocolate, custard(?), lemon, and raspberry. in my opinion they're all so good but the people I work with favor more traditional fare so we'll have a go at that next time... read more
