We loved staying in the Bald Eagle Bungalow! It was cozy and sweet! The hostess was super helpful and we loved the make your own waffle set up for breakfast! They had coffee and tea too. We stayed in many other hostels throughout our time in Alaska, but this one was the best!!

    Community kitchen at Yurt Village

We stayed in the Yurt Village and had a wonderful experience. The yurts were cozy and the community kitchen was very well furnished, with lots of food storage options for guests (refrigerator, dry bins). Unfortunately my group had a large stash of snacks stolen, but the owner was very nice and reimbursed us $100 for the inconvenience. Showers were on a sign-up system of 15minutes, which worked quite well. Location is convenient to in-town activities in Seward. Would definitely stay again!

This was not a "fairytale" stay. I am a solo traveler and While I am happy to have had a "yurt" experience I wish it hadn't been in someone's backyard where the fear of bears makes the trek to the bathroom too scary to navigate in the dark. I'm middle aged so this place is not for me... maybe when I was communicating with them they could have advised me as such.. maybe that is why they have their strict no refund policy. Other reviews led me to believe this would be a better experience. I am sure they experienced what they wrote but I certainly did not. I was led to believe that breakfast and meeting the proprietors. I sincerely I had just made this my "boondoggie" night... Anyway, never again, but if you are a group of college kids splitting the expenses.. maybe it'd be fun? The groups I met were fun and looked like they were having fun but also freezing. Too cold to cook the pancake mix left, to cold to pee and too afraid due to all the bear warnings and kit, including a flare that should be used "when" the bear starts to attack- after you have used your bell to warn the bears and your air horn to warn other people.. after ALL that and I didn't even see a bear.. ARGH! https://youtu.be/CS7k8VrllkU

I wish I could give this place 10x more stars. Seriously exceeded my expectations. Not only is it affordable, but it's very clean and cozy. The Yurts are tucked nicely into the trees so you get the real camping feeling. However there is a nice bathroom and shower within walking distance. Perfect place for those who like "glamping". Any time I go to Seward, I'll be making it a point to stay here vs a hotel. They are also only a 10 minute drive from downtown Seward so it was easy to go explore and adventure. The owners are very friendly and welcoming. I can't recommend this enough!

    The Mariners Lair. Super cute!

I came during the rainy season, and let me tell you, I got the best sleep of my life here. If you are an introvert like me, skip the hostel and get the Mariner's Lair. I imagine if you've never done a hostel before, this is a good one to try it out -- friendly people, etc. but it was the Lair that made me fall in love with it. It's like Wes Anderson's Production Designer had at it. One bed, a writing desk, a heater, and peace and quiet in the middle of the woods. A little slice of Moonrise Kingdom met with Bon Iver in the woods writing For Emma, Forever Ago. Enjoy! Super cute.

This was one of my favorite places. We originally booked two nights and added a third because we loved it. First thing to note is that this is a rural situation. So if you're looking for a hotel, go to a hotel because this may not be for you. If you're cool with a funky outhouse, outdoor shower (all in addition to indoor facilities!) and hanging with a space heater (later in the season) the NI is amazing. The pancake bar is awesome and Bucky (the first mate cat!) is the cutest! The most notable things are that 1. This place is SUPER clean. It's the kind of place that could definitely be gross, but Heather and company work very hard and its immaculate. And 2. Every house you stay in (room/cabin/trailer) is an experience. I would absolutely stay here again!

Finding affordable lodging in Seward is not easy. Came across Nauti Otter (booked April for September end of season for just under $100 a night) and very happy with our stay. It is just outside of town. We booked a room inside the main house (shared bath, with a sign up board for reserved time if you are on a tight schedule). The place is not fancy, a little older, but clean, comfortable and charming. There are other outside lodging options as well as 2 "hostel" beds upstairs. We self-checked in since hostess was away that afternoon. We didn't stay for long (just 1 night, and literally we slept, showered, and ate breakfast). I made pancakes (ingredients provided) and had hot coffee the next morning before our Kenai Fjords boat tour at 8am, very convenient and money saving. Right down the road is the Pit Bar (we popped in for a quick drink before their "peak" time of 2am) and Salmon Bake (we ate dinner there). There is also a Safeway (grocery store) for those who may be staying longer and want to cook. There are 2 cooking areas at the inn. If you want a quaint, unique and affordable place to stay, check out the Nauti Otter! Note #1: Once you book online, you get periodic emails about things to do and other discounts you can get as the guests of Nauti Otter - coolest being the water spout at MP109 Note #2: Beware noises from street as well as upstair guests while walking. Not a big deal for me but for light sleepers, bring earplugs

The cottages boast a full kitchen, with fridge, stove, sinks, microwave and even a stacked washer & dryer. Also being separate from the main house, if you're having a long stay, this would be ideal as you won't disturb anyone with comings & goings. There appeared to be 3 of these cottages. In the main, there are 5 bedrooms, ALL with private bathrooms! :) Soo makes a terrific breakfast that's included... forget those scrawny little donuts or cold cereals you'll see at a hotel. She made us scrambled eggs, sausage, muffins, home-made blueberry compote and fresh squeezed orange juice! I'm tellin' ya... it's a great way to start the day! She also knows the local area & can tell you about discounts and things to see. When we arrived, she showed us the code to get in, the etiquette (removing shoes- great cleanliness idea in Alaska), and showed us around her beautiful home. Soo also used to live in Anchorage, where my sister still lives and I used to, and owned a sewing shop. When we arrived, and my sister made the connection, and I off-handed asked if she could re-attach the handles on my favorite tote. I didn't really expect a yes...but she said YES! The next morning at breakfast, there was my repaired tote on the chair in the dining room. She refused any compensation, but I will be forever grateful. Soo is kind, gracious and staying at her home is FABULOUS!

On the second floor, peaked ceilings (knotty pine in the living room), a large deck, and plenty of comfortable chairs to view the mountain wilderness through over-sized windows. There's even free Wi-Fi to share photos with your social media friends. And did I mention the great mattress on the king-sized bed? *Clean: The bathroom and kitchen are spic and span. The floors are immaculate (leave your boots at the door, please). No dust bunnies hiding anywhere. Its about 10 miles (~12 nautical miles) from Seward. All Alaska heritage tour boats seem to stop here. But after the guests leave, the island is ONLY for the folks who stay and some staff. There were about 4 cabins. If I added the restaurant and activities desk, there would probably be just around 6 cabins in the whole island. There's cool blue ocean right in front of you and a gorgeous lake behind the cabins...That's it! They warned us that because blueberries were ripening, there had been bear sightings on the island the previous day. The island was great for sea-shelling, I wasn't too good at it, but hey, with the whole island practically to yourself, you can always try ;) Food is catered by an executive chef on the premise. We had mentioned I was vegetarian, so they made sure there were options. For dinner, I had risotto and grilled zucchini with locally picked blueberry cobbler. YUMMM We had gone sea kayaking during the day - it was surreal. Just pristine waters and you in your kayak. In the evening we could see salmon spawn everywhere on the water. It was quite a spectacle. My fiancé and I stayed here late June in 2020. Since the trains were not running currently, the lodge was even more secluded than usual. It usually has up to 16 guests, 8 cabins, on site and when we were here, we ended up only have 4 guests there. As soon as we arrived, the staff greeted us warmly and the manager, Brandon, introduced himself and stated whatever we wanted or desired they would help achieve that or come close to it. He stated he or someone else would always be available for questions or concerns, and he did not disappoint. The cabins were beautiful and cozy. There are no outlets in the room which we did not mind as the main area has plenty available. I was able to charge my camera batteries without an issue as well. Wi-Fi worked great in this area but not in the cabins, so needing to charge your phone while in the cabin was not necessary. We stayed at the puffin cabin which had a great view of the bay and the lake just behind the cabin where we spotted river otters and baby ducks. The chef was from Vero Beach, FL which is close to my hometown. His cooking was phenomenal and kept you excited for the next meal. This is top dollar dining at its finest, no meal tasted the same and the meals were well executed. I am a self-proclaimed "foodie" and would not be this kind if not so deserved. Brandon told us about a hike, a bit on the challenging side, was available for us and explained how to get there and where to get some great views/pictures. This hike was not even recorded on my hiking app, All Trails, so I added it for others to use as a guide. Fox Island flora and landscape is like nothing I have ever seen, its damp and brittle which can make or break this hike from moderate to challenging, especially with the steep incline. On our second day there we were unable to do kayaking secondary to the tour personal being exposed to COVID, so precautionary measures were taken. Although at first this really bummed us out, we asked if they had any fishing rods which we could use to try to catch fish. Luckily, Brandon was on it, and an employee had a couple rods and lures for us to use. The chef brought us out to the "spot" on the end of the bay where the employee stated he would catch rock fish, and boy did we! (and when I say we I mean my fiancé, all I caught was seaweed and kelp, whoomph). The chef cooked the rock fish for dinner and it beyond delicious, reminded me of grouper and kind of looked like it too! We also got a show when the chef put the rock fish scraps back into the ocean and watch 2 bald eagles fight for the winnings--just WOW!! Brandon also told us if we were feeling up to it, we could jump off the dock into the frigid Alaskan waters, and you do not have to dare me to adventure. It was a beautifully warm day, and although my limbs went numb as soon as I hit the water, as soon as you get out you are instantly warm--so STRANGE for this Florida native. Every night they offered a beach fire with smores which we gladly accepted. The staff was cautious wearing masks when around guests and I never once felt unsafe. The day out you enjoy a 5-hour boat ride to explore the Fjords and see wildlife, we saw humpback whales, plenty of seals, puffins, an enormous number of seabirds, and the Aialik Glacier. The captain of the tour boat was incredibly knowledgeable about the Fjords and the boat was big enough with a catamaran style hull that allowed its massive boat to take on waves, so that I never once felt seasick. The beauty of Fox Island, the delicious food, and the attentive staff with opportunities for adventure, and the enjoyable Fjords boat tour allow me to absolutely recommend this lodge. The price is beyond worth every penny. I would ask that the lodge acquire more fishing equipment because this activity became a highlight for us both and think future guests would appreciate it as well. Stephen and I thank the staff for everything they did for us while we there and making the last bit of our Alaska trip incredibly memorable.

I may have been a little extra excited when I arrived since I had just spent the last 5 days kayaking around Aialik Bay and probably would have loved any place with a hot shower and a warm bed, but once you meet Dave and Wendy, it feels like you're crashing over at a friend's house. Dave and Wendy are wonderful hosts, and the lodge is very comfortable and convenient, and immaculately maintained. We were 10 of us, and stayed 3 nights - used the grill, but not the hot tub - and made our own breakfasts and dinners at the lodge. Wendy was very accommodating, when two of our crew, me included, could not make the kayak trip, and found other people to use the slot, and helped us to make alternate arrangements. Bear Paw is a great place to stay in Seward, & especially if you plan to go kayaking.
