** 4.5/5 stars. I…read morelove Esh's Market, it's a very standout grocery store in the area! It's always been a cleanly and visually appealing store to shop at, and I look forward to it every time I go. The main "gimmick" of Esh's is the fact that their food is stuff that would normally have gone to waste--whether it be dented (but still sealed) boxes, or food that's past it's sell-by date but still safe to eat. They meticulously sort through it to stock the shelves at all three locations (Loveland (this one!), Windsor, and Dacono). This is where the 0.5 of a star gets knocked off, it's very hard to tell when certain items may start to go bad, especially those without any signs or expiration dates (though this is easily circumvented by using what you buy quicker). The other downside is it's hard to find products you love on repeat visits, since they get a variety of products from stores all across Northern Colorado there's no telling whether or not one item is here to stay or in limited stock. Despite my small gripes, I love this store to death and it's a great way to get some cheap produce, fancy cheeses, and other items you likely wouldn't have bought normally.

Old Town Spice Shop is my little piece of aromatic heaven on earth. Yet another place I discovered…read moreeven before I moved here, I'm a regular since I go through the spices so quickly. Recently, I went shopping for Christmas gifts for the husband's side of the family and saw that they're pre-packaging gift box sets of different spices (my personal favorite is the beer and bacon set). They have "Movie Night" gift boxes which include a pre-selected set of their popcorn seasonings, which I wanted to get, but was feeling picky, so I decided to design my own to suit each individual I was ordering for. They provided the boxes and I just filled them with whatever struck my fancy. Birthday Cake for the little ones, Cheddar Bacon for most of the adults, Bacon Salt for the vegan (they use soy-based protein for this salt, similar to what Bacon Bits uses), Pizza seasoning for the aunt and uncle... The possibilities are endless! It can get a little expensive, depending on what you select, but that's what I love about being able to build your own set, and I love the fact that they're not a chain, local and family-owned, which makes me even more eager to put my money there and keep them around. Now the only thing I need them to do for me is bring back the wasabi ranch that disappeared from the shelves a few years ago! I will give all the money for that seasoning, even though I've found some great alternatives in the shop.

Looking forward to mixing up the dip seasoning mixes soon. A staff member recommended mixing the Queso & Fiesta dip mixes as one option, so I'm looking forward to trying out that combo! This little shop had loads of spices, seasonings and unique toppings (like their line for adding to popcorn). Go by next time you're in Fort Collins. I'm sure you'll find something you'd like to try!

The store has a wide variety of products with a limited selection of each due to their small size. Their prices are higher than the chain stores but lower than 7-11 type of stores. And they are nearby. We do our weekly grocery shopping at Wal-mart in Longmont (or sometimes King Soopers). To pick up a few items, it is far cheaper and more convenient to go to Hays Market than to drive to Longmont. I understand that about a decade ago Safeway was to build a store in the North East corner of CO 56 and US 287, but backed out of the deal because there were not enough people here to support it. Luckily, we have Hays Market for our go-to store. As Berthoud grows to be a city, with all of the reasons we left a city to more to Berthoud, the chain stores will come also. At that time Hays Market will have to change or close. Until then, I am glad we live in a small town with a small town grocery store.

And the coveted Five Stars from Barry G. goes to…read more..... The Bottled Olive in Windsor! Here we go. This unassuming storefront appeared about 18 months ago in the strip of shops that are just across the parking lot and west of King Soopers. If I average 10 visits to King Soopers per month, that means I've driven by this place nearly 200 times while staring at the sign, wondering how a shop that sells bottled olives could survive, and just being too rushed to make time to stop in and check it out. There's also a dentist office over in that strip of shops - and I maintain a strict 100-foot rule when it comes to those places (except Dr. Owens....see my Yelp on Owen's Dentistry for more details). ANYWAY... So, why the big delay in visiting The Bottled Olive? Well, I guess, I expected olives. In bottles. I've got nothing against bottled olives. In fact, that's usually when olives look their most spiffy. But I drove close enough to the front a few days ago and saw that they offer infused olive oils and vinegars. Hmmmm...mental note, I thought.... So, today, we made a point of checking-off one of my many mental notes and stopped in to check it out. Two things became immediately clear. First, I'd made a giant mistake by not visiting this place way earlier. Second, this wasn't going to be a quick stop. Samples of dips, jams, mustards, spreads and even Bloody Mary mixes lined the walls before we even got to the showcase line-up of 30+ oils and vinegars at the rear of the store. Oil flavors included things like Blood Orange, Peppered Bacon, Avocado, Wild Rosemary, and Sweet Cream Butter. Next to the oils were a wide variety of vinegars such as Cucumber, Toasted Coconut, Mango, Summer Peach, and Spicy Sriracha - along with some more traditional balsamic options. It was nearly too much to process - so we jumped right into sampling! The flavors were incredible, and the staff offered great use suggestions. They also had printed materials with great ways to include their "O&V"s in healthy meals. The store offers all kinds of popcorn flavorings, lots of unique pastas (imported from Italy, no less), various coffees and teas, and some very cool gift ideas. If I wasn't already feeling terrible about assuming "bottled olives" (seriously?), owner Michelle showed us their kitchen and told us all about their cooking classes and their themed evenings where they prepare 5-course meals for attendees while providing insights on how to incorporate their products into a healthy and tasty lifestyle. We checked out their website and cooking schedule when we got home, and we've already booked the "Backyard Daddy's Grub" cooking event with our new friends at The Bottled Olive at the end of this month! A convenient location, reasonable prices, incredible flavors, friendly staff.... wait for it..... OLIVE this place!
