    Natural Grocers in Lawrence
    Rhea W.

Natural Grocers is great- I spent less money on the same items that I would've paid more for at the Merc. They had a lot of variety, and an awesome vitamin section. I adore the Community Merc, and Natural Grocers won't replace it because they're very different; I go to the merc when I want a fresh, healthy lunch on the go. I'll go to Natural Grocers when it's time to stock the food pantry.

Great grocery store for vegans or people on whole food diets. More Hemp products than the merc and cheaper overall.

Not nearly as much local variety as the Merc or Whole Foods, but that's fine--that's what they are there for.

Probably also was Kansas-style "fresh," which means frozen that is defrosted and then sold at the higher fresh prices. Then one day, in a hurry, bought a ready-made sandwich to take out. Should have stopped long enough to read the fine print on the wrapper: It said the sandwich was four days old. I wouldn't serve a four-day-old ham and cheese to my worst enemy ... not even if it was free, unlike mine, which was extravagantly priced. Too bad Lawrence can't have a nice co-op.

This is basically a Kroger Store from the layout of the stores and seeing the generic characters I've seen and at Jewel - Osco back home. The place is full of unruly college kids that loiter in the store or parking lot. The food here is expensive and there lacks any sort of real deal. Staff here was friendly but the store felt completely outdated. Fair organization as well. Probably won't come back if I had a choice.

This last weekend doors were not opened at 7:00 am. Employees are throughout the store stocking shelves and pushing around the big carts for pick up orders. The isles are barely big enough for 2 carts to go at the same time and they have displays in the tiny isles that you have to work around too. So we make our way through the store and head up to the check out. There is NEVER a lane open (besides the tobacco sales lane, and it was closed too). We overheard other customers asking the employee when there would be cashiers and she replied in another 20 minutes. There were employees standing around talking to each other about weekend plans, but no one to ring us up. We used the self checkout, which is ridiculous considering our cart was full and well over $100. There is not enough room to bag all of your food and keep it on the scale, which prompts it to stop scanning and gets the light flashing. The machine would stop and we would have to call over a customer service employee for every 10 items to check the cart. She would just swipe her card and clear the error. Then she proceeds to tell us she "does not know why this is happening". Its every 10 items, trust me, we do this every weekend. The self checkouts are convenient if you are just grabbing a few things and want to go in and out quickly. As far as a weekly shopping haul, no way. Dillons PLEASE hire more cashiers to work the checkout lanes. I am not getting the employee discount, I did not come to orientation to learn the ins and outs of these machines, because I DO NOT WORK HERE. Sorry to be a complainer but it is getting old...

Schaake's covers you for all of the above, just outside of Lawrence. Some other area pumpkin patches and farms offer pumpkin "picking" by simply setting up a ton of pumpkins for you to pick from a pile which is essentially the same as a grocery store. Schaake's is great because you can actually traipse through the fields, step over the vines and pluck your own pumpkins straight from the farm. In non-Covid times, they have a tractor ride to take you out and it'll pick you up so you don't have to haul them back. Covid times, they've added wheelbarrows up front so you can haul them easily. There are other little fun things here like a pumpkin slingshot, a chicken coop, concessions with cider & kettle corn, hay bale maze, cows, and an old school playground area. If you like the peaceful openness of rural Kansas, this farm will certainly deliver on that, even though it's very close to Lawrence. If it's one of those perfect weekends in October, know that it's going to be very busy, but it's always fun no matter how packed it gets. It's worth the trip over from KC as well as we haven't found a better pumpkin patch anywhere around.

Cottin's may be associated with Ace Hardware but they are as local as you can get. There was a tornado in the area recently. The tornado happened around 7:00 pm and there was devastation in many neighborhoods. Cottin's announced they would re-open the store and stay open as long as needed so everyone could get what they needed that night. Totally unbelievable that a store would do that and it created a huge impact on me. Cottin's also serves as a drop off center for used cell phones to be donated to the local domestic violence shelter. The cell phones are given to victims of domestic violence so they will be able to communicate in an emergency. What a wonderful thing for Cottin's to do in collecting the phones. Before this drop off point, I had to drive to the outskirts of town during business hours to make my donation. I love a store giving back. The store has plenty of local flavor. The parking lot even serves as the farmers market during the week. The quaintness of the store is noticed everywhere inside, too. The displays were creative and they are customer service oriented. Prices are competitive, too. The only downside to this lovely store is the door is accessed on the side of the building and you have to park in a back parking lot. There is ample parking room but you have to snake through a neighborhood to get to the parking access. There is no store front access, everything is accessed through the rear. Just a minor intrusion and not a game changer by any means. Local flavor, great service, good prices and great philanthropy... awesome store!

Cottin's is a fourth the size of the big Saturday morning market, but it excels for several reasons. First, the downtown market (if you talk to the vendors) is rife with minor infighting, rules enforcement and headaches for some of the vendors. That with the big crowds and you get a lot of grumpy people selling their products. None of that here. The family that runs the hardware store is always present and has a great attitude--and it shows in the vendors and the people that show up every Thursday at 4:00 p.m. with a closing time of 6:30 p.m. And what's this? The Free State Brewery has a booth so it's part happy hour, part social gathering, part simply a good time. Oh, and the music is scheduled months in advance and rotates so you don't have to suffer some of the awful stuff that frequents the downtown market ad nauseam every week. I even prefer most of the vendors here and it's a delightful mix of interesting small businesses, few of which frequent the downtown market. Always something cooking as well so a good place to grab an early dinner, have a beer, chat with some friends and just enjoy the afternoon. This is really what a Farmer's Market should be in my opinion and why I'll keep coming back as long as it's here.
