I don't shop here much, but I have a couple of older neighbors that I bring here to shop all the time. Natural grocers has all sorts of things that a normal grocery store doesn't have. The selection is great and the employees are very helpful. Many of the products that you find here are healthier than what you would find in a normal grocery store. My daughter has a lot of food allergies and stuff that we are normally able to piece together at other stores in different states, I have not been able to do in Abilene since being here. However, I have discovered this store and it was great! It had all of the funky brands that we usually have to buy due to allergies, had awesome selections in other things and more, produce was awesome looking and prices were reasonable. Overall, it is a great option for those looking for organic products, natural health, allergy free foods and supplements. We were even able to find some other things that she used to get (other stores stopped carrying them) and hasn't had in awhile, so it was a treat! read more

I've been making trips from Austin to Abilene for years, and it's been an utter pain to have to bring my own food along. It's not that I'm on a special diet, it's just the recommended healthy sort: whole grains, (not fried) fish, organic (not candied, boiled to death, or swimming in fat) fruits and vegetables, and beans (no pork fat-back, thanks). Asking for vegetarian options at a restaurant in the middle of cattle country is like landing in a space ship and riding in on a large rabbit. Well, even if you're not a vegan, a vegetarian, or a pescaterian, this store is a welcome window into the realm of healthier dining options, which we now know translate into a healthier life. Hormone-free, all natural meats and dairy (the way grandpa used to raise livestock), organic fresh and processed foods, organically grown fruits & vegetables, USDA organic processed foods & dairy items, and rows and rows of vitamins, supplements, herbal teas and remedies, and skin care products. The prices are equal to what you'd pay at HEB for similar fare, which thankfully is also starting to carry some of these items as well. They also run weekly specials. Tellingly, this place was not crowded on a Sunday afternoon. The general populace has yet to catch on, but I hope they do. The only thing that could make this place more appealing is an in-house cafe/deli, because I haven't found a natural foods restaurant in town yet, and because the burgers, chips and sweet tea special advertised at a drive-through up the street really isn't very special. A lot of fancy, healthy stuff that's pretty expensive, but I'm glad it's an option! I was going to give this place 3 stars but it averages 4.5 and I started questioning my judgment. I went in there looking for pork shoulder and didn't find it. They have a small meat selection, but still manage to have interesting things like bison burgers. I don't know, I don't get it. They did have Bragg's apple cider vinegar drinks. ACV is good for you and I drink it straight sometimes, and when I do, Bragg's is the best to buy, and I found actual Bragg's ACV drinks there, different flavors and everything! I've shopped at Natural Grocers in Colorado for over a decade. It's a good place to get the kind of things you most likely won't find at regular grocery stores. I did read one review where they mentioned the customer service attitude seem to be slipping a little. Since Natural Grocers started in Colorado, perhaps it's more competitive there and employees are groomed to understand that their business relies on returning customers. Maybe the further away a store is from the mothership, the more they deviate from that mentality. I've had that same kind of sense when I've been in to the Abilene store. It's not an outright bad attitude, just kind of "snippy" like at times. Having said that, it's still a good place to go and maybe if more places like this show up, it will instill that notion that they're not "the only game in town," credo. read more

As someone who has moved to Abilene from Seattle, I was incredibly disappointed by the grocery selection here.... until Natural Grocers. Now I'm once again able to make my home remedies, my custom teas, and shop for my organic fare - from a little town in West Texas! Who knew Like previous reviewers have said, the staff are very knowledgeable, and don't let the "small space" fool you. They are very well-stocked, and for the most part can order you anything they don't happen to have on hand. If you are looking for nutritional coaching or alternative medicine suggestions, they have a nutritional coach on staff, Marshall, who is extremely nice and helpful. Groceries are, of course, pricier than WalMart or United, but well worth it for quality. read more

My favorite place to shop now! I love the huge assortment of meats and all the unusual beverage options. I got something the other day that had floating chia seeds in it. It was mesmerizing to look at! lol! LOVE the produce section (and the reduced produce offerings!) I always find the random baking supplies I need there to eat gluten free. My favorite section is the bulk section. Spices, dried fruits, teas. OMG!! heaven in a bag! And the prices for the bulk stuff is wonderful! I have been able to find things like marshmallow root powder and whole nutmeg! If they ever leave I will have to follow them!!!!!! read more

I LOVE this store! And am blown away every time I shop their by the incredible selection they have. They have EVERYTHING! And if you can't find it, one of the very the friendly staff members will help you find it. Once you are inside the store looks small, but I assure you if you can name it they can find it. The produce selection is divine with so many fresh choices. The frozen food section is very nice and includes so many different organic choices. And I found wonderful items here that I have never seen at Whole Foods or Central Market. Again, I'm just delighted that Abilene has a Natural Grocers. read more

Oh, how I love this store. Living in the heart of Texas, it's hard for me to find meat free options (I am semi-vegetarian). Never in my life have I stumbled upon vegetarian tamales. Yes, the prices are higher than what you would pay at a traditional grocery store, but it's worth it. Every single penny. I was also looking for plain peanuts, not roasted, not covered in salt and I found them there. I went in to grab another bag today but the shelf was empty. I asked a clerk and he looked for a good few minutes in the back and apologized because they were out but told me that their next shipment comes in in two days. The staff is always friendly and helpful and their selection is amazing. Bring your own bag or use their cardboard boxes, as they do not use plastic bags. I usually just shove everything into my purse. I really cannot say enough good things about this store. read more

I love this place. My son has severe allergies to all kinds of different processed foods, including soy foods, foods with yeast, and anything that has tree nuts in it. You would not believe how hard it is for me to shop in Wal-Mart - it always takes me like three hours because I have to look at each label before I put the item in my cart. 90% of processed foods have soy in them for a preservative and filler, and it makes my selection in secular grocery stores extremely small. This place has unprocessed foods that are not tainted with soy preservatives, tree nuts, or yeast. My son is healthier, I've lost lots of weight, and my household as a whole is more environmentally friendly. I also love coming into a grocery store that's not crowded and where the lines aren't two hours long at the register. People greet me when I come in, and the owner knows my son by name. I am very grateful they're here! This is as good as it gets! The only gripe is about the prices, but I'm willing to pay more for my son to eat healthy. read more

I was thrilled when Natural Grocers opened up because it gave me yet another alternative to find healthier options than your standard West Texas fare. The good news is there is a little more variety (especially if you're attempting a Vegan lifestyle - with Vegan alternatives to cheese/mayo, etc) but I found myself still gravitating toward more processed foods. Some habits are harder to break...but this store definitely gives you "health food" training wheels. This store offers things like kombucha, buffalo meat and dairy free cheese in addition to organic meats, cheeses and produce. The downside is you're going to pay a little more for it. And just because things are sold at a health food store doesn't necessarily make them healthier options (see processed comment above.) But they do have a wide selection of things that you can't really find at other stores, and definitely worth a visit. They generally don't bag so take your own (or buy one there.) They also offer boxes in case you forget your bags. I recommend the organic black currant preserves, the Bella Ciao gelato sandwiches and the already prepared black bean tamales. The hummus is cheaper than you'd find in a regular grocery store but not quite as creamy. Big plus - if you try their vitamins/supplements they do have a refund policy if you're not satisfied. This can be very handy especially if you're buying a pricy item. Check with one of the clerks to see if the product you choose is eligible. read more

Pretty much our exclusive grocery store now. We eat organic paleo and the fresh chicken is to die for. I never liked chicken until I had the organic fresh they sell. It has an odor, and at first I was leery, then I realized this is what chicken is supposed to smell like, it hasn't been processed in bleach or sodium like what is normally purchased. We also have sucked it up and put our two cattle dogs on the natural raw dehydrated food, that is human grade, but costly at $68 a bag (one week worth). Cheaper than feeding horses I suppose, but they are incredibly healthy, and after losing our first cattle dog to possible melamine poisoning from that crap pet food that comes from china I won't feed anything else.The staff is friendly and helpful, and very kind not to hotice i am a daily shopper for fresh meat/veggies, the store very, very clean. We shop here a lot. Love the store and the staff is wonderful. My hubby buys a lot of his snack foods here. I am a bit upset though that they stopped carrying Noosa...my favorite brand of yogurt. It's the only place in Abilene I have found it. That is why I gave them 4 stars instead of 5. I like the individual packets of bath salts too. I get the lavender ones for the kids. I love the selection at this grocery store. There have been a couple of times when I thought the staff expected me to bow down to them and thank them copiously for their service, but this is atypical; staff are usually helpful and pleasant. I like that they recycle their boxes and do not use plastic bags. I also like that the manager will research a product for you if he doesn't have it. He once suggested that I go onto Gardein's website, and when I did, and made a comment about one of their products they sent me coupons! By the time I came back to the store, the manager had the product I wanted and I saved money! read more

Love this store, I have been shopping here for close to 2 years and it just gets better. It smells so good when you walk in the front door, I think it's the natural soaps they have over in the corner of the store(one of my places before checking out). Friendly, helpful checkers will help you find what you want if you couldn't find it yourself . I usually go here on Sunday after church and as of late it seems like more people have discovered this store. If you don't know about Natural Grocers, it is a chain store, but it definitely doesn't seem that way. The employees made me feel welcome when I first moved here, and are willing to help with any questions you may have. I love that you take home your groceries in cardboard boxes-no more plastic bags that I can't recycle in Abilene! The selection of vitamins, protein powders, and granola is fantastic. This store is great for stuff you just can't find at other grocery stores and used to be super friendly and still is most of the time if the manager is there. Seems to be some new clerks that are just not that friendly. Do I need the "Hello how are you?" Well no. But I tend to like it and the woman that wears the headband all the time will ignore me everytime I walk in. Other than their customer service slipping good place to shop moderately if you do not have a big budget. Quite pricey in places but especially on their meats you can taste where that extra money went. Nice place if your trying to go vegan gives you a few more choices. read more
