I contacted California Professional Movers, and Andrew was very nice at first. Before hiring them, I specifically asked if they were insured and if they had a large moving truck. He told me yes. He also gave me a price over the phone.
When they arrived at my house, they showed up in a U-Haul that wasn't even very big. After walking through my home and seeing everything that needed to be moved, Andrew confirmed the same price he had quoted me over the phone.
After seeing everything in person, Andrew told me the move would take about five hours. We agreed on a rate of $130 per hour, and I was told that price included everything.
About four hours into the move, Andrew told me he no longer thought they would be able to finish within the five hours he had originally estimated. Trying to be understanding, I agreed to add two more hours, bringing the total to seven hours, or $910. I even gave the crew an additional $40 tip because I appreciated their effort and wanted to show my gratitude.
Even after adding the extra two hours, Andrew came back and said they still wouldn't be finished. At that point, he started trying to renegotiate the price by charging me per item, asking for an additional $50 for the garage refrigerator, another $50 for other items, and so on. None of those extra charges were part of our original agreement.
To make matters worse, they damaged my refrigerator, which cost me almost $4,000. I reported the damage immediately, and Andrew gave me an email address where I was instructed to submit my claim. I followed those instructions and sent everything in. As of today, four days later, I have not received any acknowledgment or response.
I am a senior citizen, and I expected honest and straightforward service. Instead, I was left feeling extremely disappointed. They damaged my belongings, did not move everything they had agreed to move, and left furniture and bedroom sets placed haphazardly in the rooms instead of taking the time to put everything where they belonged.
My advice is simple: don't hire this company. My experience involved changing estimates, attempts to add unexpected charges, damaged property, incomplete work, and no response after I submitted a damage claim. I trusted the promises I was given, and I regret that decision. I hope this review helps others avoid the same experience. Needless to say there is nothing professional about California Professional Movers.
