About 1/3rd of the trail has rocky footing with many roots to dodge, the rest of the trail is very easy. The pond has a sandy beach for swimming and can get busy during the summer, which is why I tend to go here in the spring and fall. There are plenty of picnic tables, a couple of pavilions, and fishing is allowed in the pond. There are additional trails including cross country ski trails throughout the property. There is also the occasional bench on the trail, offering beautiful views of the pond. It's not a huge park, but it's a nice park, and quiet off season.

There also a dam at one end, and beautiful views of the lake. The lake is 200 acres, and the park includes 24 campsites, a boat launch, picnic tables and shelters, an 18-hole disc golf course, miles of trails, boating, hunting, and fishing. The lake purportedly offers largemouth and smallmouth bass, pickerel, perch, carp, and sunfish. The trails are now nicely marked, thanks to an Eagle Scout project by Giovanni Couture, Troop 66 in May 2022. The project also added benches with views of the lake. The footing can be a little challenging with rocks, roots, downed trees, etc. In the fall, the fallen leaves can make it even trickier, and quite slippery when wet. This is a very pleasant park to visit, hike, or fish. There has always been ample parking when we visited, and I think swimming is prohibited.

If you have the time and ability, this is a FANTASTIC way to explore the beauty our state has to offer. Through-hike it or break it into smaller segments over a series of trips... this is a trek that can be enjoyed by hikers with all levels of experience. In the 1990s, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and the US National Park Service teamed up to make this trail a reality. I chose to traverse it from north to south so that I could end at Blue Shutters Beach and dip my feet in the ocean. This path meanders through lush forests and historic farmlands, past miles of stone walls and blue blazes, over boulder fields and numerous rivers, and offers a chance at connecting with a variety of wildlife including deer, turkeys, birds, cows, and so much more. This is a glimpse into not only what Rhode Island is today but what it once was. Old foundations, cemeteries, mill sites, barns and farm equipment pop up throughout. "The North South Trail" by Cliff Vanover is a fantastic resource if you are planning this hike. It is out of print but several of the RI Libraries have copies you can access. I completed the trail over 6 days and recruited friends and family to assist with car spots. It is possible to complete the trail in one go over shorter or longer periods of time. There are plentiful nearby campgrounds as staying on trail is not allowed. It is difficult to sum up my entire experience on-trail; I encourage you to immerse yourself in the outdoors and check out this path less travelled. It is well-maintained, easy to follow, and was absolutely beautiful this October with its abundant foliage. The sand dunes, sea grass, and blue crashing waves at the finality of my trek was a sight to be seen. Try it from south to north and hook up with the Midstate Trail in MA for a route all the way to NH!

It was more of a Rhode Island resident bucket list. A good portion of the 'trail' is road (about 50% country roads). There is a great book to assist and give insightful info. However, unless you have a friend or library to lend it to you it's about 100$ lol At any rate, it is a fine walkabout to go from one point in RI to the next. My personal recommendation is to hike it North to South and dive in the ocean. Especially if you do it in the winter. Pure exhilaration! Happy trails and don't forget to sign the books at each end!

We hiked the blue/white trail over to the Natchaug Trail, and made a very pleasant loop hike. The trails are mostly flat, but well blazed and easy to navigate. There's a Conservation education center (which we didn't go into) and a really nice picnic shelter with a nice view of the lake. Overall, this is really a gorgeous park that was almost entirely empty when we visited - I'm surprised it was so quiet!

But in 2011 that changed, and it's now easily accessible to the public and a nice path has been paved (literally and figuratively) allowing anyone to visit the "summit". The path is very well maintained and clearly marked, an easy walk that will take you no more than 5 minutes and that's if you're going a very slow pace. At the top, remains of the old observatory set up by the university can be found. Three old buildings, a lookout area, as well as a guest book to sign sit at the top. Located a short walk from the road, 2-5 minutes, depending on how fast you walk, it is literally just a small rock protruding from the ground. The path is clear and well-maintained, and parking is just off the road. It's a good thing to start kids out on, to see if they might like hiking and/or walking in the woods, and for people who might be challenged by walking long(er) distances but adventurous or seasoned hikers will leave disappointed. But, again, it's not much. No challenge, no view, no fanfare. For a quick little excursion its probably worth the trip, and again even a fun way to introduce the little ones to hiking and/or the woods. But don't expect views, don't expect a challenge, and overall a bit of disappointment. My fault for not researching it more beforehand, but I expected a little bit of a view, similar to the tower in of RT1 in South County, alas there is none.

Fairly decent sized dirt parking lot, short, well maintained trail, small turnaround area for launching canoes, kayaks, etc. into the river for some upstream or downstream paddling on the Willimantic River and Eagleville Pond (to the south). I hope to find my way back here with paddles in hand at some point. Hiking: I use the word hiking very loosely. It's more of a casual stroll, but it was pretty nicely maintained and meanders around a bit through wooded areas, grassy areas and marshy areas, with a short duration along the shoreline of the river. To find the trail, park in the dirt lot, then walk all the way to the back right corner of they grassy field. Grassy areas were low while I was there due to it being the winter, but I'd certainly be cautious for ticks if that grass gets longer in the summer. Looks like good potential for mosquitos as well due to the marshy areas, so show up prepared. Paddling: The river looked very calm and with good potential for wildlife sighting. You could paddle upstream or float down into Eagleville Pond. There's another park at the end of Eagleville Pond where you can end your trip if you have the means to do so. (Note: the pond ends with a pretty wide, marked dam. Go to the far left while facing downstream to get out at the other park). Adjacent park / Lynch Landing: The trail connects to the Lynch Landing trail, and in fact this review is admittedly glossing over that fact and considering it to be all one trail system. Know that you could also park in the VERY small Lynch Landing parking lot on Depot Road if you preferred. (...or possibly a the "EO Smith Depot Campus" building next to the Lynch Landing parking area, but I can't advise on whether or not that's allowed at this time.) Note: Yes, you can go across the bridge on your way out and instead of back out on Plains Road, but know that it's narrow and unpaved for a good distance. There's a great looking property shortly past the bridge. I could definitely see myself living there...
