It's a Navy Base! And here's my take... Naval Air Station (NAS) Jacksonville (JAX) - birth place of the Blue Angels Flight Exhibition Team in March 1946 to raise understanding of naval aviation and to raise morale. However, the Blue Angels are home based in Pensacola...so what is the rest of the history at NAS JAX? For starters...it's located in Duval County along the St. John's River in northeastern Florida. The Florida National Guard constructed a base here around 1909. In World War I the site became known as Camp Johnston. When WWI ended, the National Guard renamed the base to Camp Foster. Circa 1939-1940, it was determined there was a need for coastal air defense. Florida's National Guard's was relocated to Starke (Camp Blanding)...and thus NAS JAX was opened. WHOA! Today, we all seem to drive the roads and don't pay attention to our surroundings when on the base. We just do what we must do...and go to where we're going and that's it. I always wonder about the history of a place and you can tell the base has some history to it. Sure there are static displays and such, but they don't tell the story and the history is far beyond the static displays. I had to Google the history since I haven't seen anything on base. If you Google it yourself you will be surprised at all the information and things that happened at this base since 1909. I am sure public affairs has the history, but not many people go there, nor have the time. I do wish there were some historic signs...and reality is, there may be, but I haven't seen any. I now try to pay closer attention to simple details when I'm on base...it's interesting. With that said, it is a nice base and has a lot to offer. It not only has that park full of retired aircraft on display, but it also has all the typical things...commissary, NEX, Mini-Mart, Garden Center, Ticket & Tours, etc. It also has a hospital, very nice base pool with a slide, golf course, picnicking areas, walking trails, a marina and beautiful views of the St. John's River. There are even cabins to rent within walking distance of the river. Every few years they host an air show...and you can be blessed with seeing the Blue Angels which originated here. I do want to give a special shout out to the folks working the gates. They are always friendly no matter what time of the day, no matter what the weather is, nor how busy they are...you'll normally always get a "Welcome Abroad!" Came to this base. Of course for not to be Disclosed reasons. However, I must say. Very friendly Mil. Personnel. Absolutely, professional. Jacksonville, Fl has several Military Bases. I am very proud of not just knowing that sons, daughters, and spouses. Have great facilities here. While serving and working on preserving our Freedom. This is most definitely, a large base. I visited Norfolk, VA. San Diego, Other Bases in the State of CA. Also in Hawaii. Many more in Fl. Primarily Navy/Marines. Yes, Army. Let's not forget The Coast Guard. Shopping at a large Mil. Base has its perks. A very attractive one is ""No Tax"" This Base has for the Mil Families. And, Ret. or Active. Shopping, Food(Commissary) Mall Type Facility. Most Large Bases Have Food Courts, You can purchase, household, Clothing, Shoes, Jewelry,etc. can visit their website navynex.com Can purchase Collectibles, Lladro Beautiful porcelain Creations. At discounted prices. Doubt you'd find them in other stores. Only place I've bought Lladro reasonably priced.(No Tax) has been in Grand Cayman Island. Aside from these things. They have Hair/Beauty Salons, Liquor Stores, Repair Shops, Gas Stations, Bowling Alleys, Gyms, Restaurants, some have Fast Food(Franchise Pizza) Subs, even Delivery if you are staying in "The Navy Lodges" "BOQ" Bachelor Officers Quarters. Knowledge is power. Please, Support Our Military. They still pay Taxes and pay for many of their expenses. Not all are Officers. Some are family of 4 on a 30k salary. I'm blessed. Was stationed here and the conditions are pretty gross. Lots of stray cats and dogs plus bugs in most of the buildings.

The pharmacy has plenty of seating in the waiting room. You will need it if dropping off a new prescription or activating one. If you are picking one up that is called in it is very quick. The worse part is trying to call in a new prescription over the phone. No one ever answers the line. I called and was on hold for over 30 minutes and then got disconnected. I called again the next day 3 times and no answer. The last time I was on hold for over 45 minutes and right at 5 when they are supposed to close someone picked up the phone and hangs up on me. read more

Well, its the base not much I can really say about it. I only visit here when I'm going to the EXCHANGE or COMMISSARY. We really should take advantage of the other amenities on base but it's just so far from where we live. I don't go past these 2 places so this about all I can comment on. Commissary: The new commissary is MASSIVE, quite a big change from the old commissary. There are so many options and choices. Of course, the commissary seems to always be crowded when we do go but that could just be me. There are many lines and it seems to be very organized. Love the seafood department. Exchange: Love buying all my laundry products here but honestly the Exchange is not always cheaper. I love their clothes selections & perfume. Not a big fan of some of their jewelry as I had to take a pair of earrings back because they were pretty flimsy and didn't clamp securely. The jewelry manager was very pleasant in helping with the transaction. of course, we will go back. read more

What can you say? It's a Navy base. If you can get on, good for you. If not, don't be depressed. You aren't missing a lot. This place is pretty big as far as Navy bases go. Hospital, air strip, golf club, Navy Lodge and NGIS, waterfront, marina... You can walk around some older jets near the hangers and an walk by the water either at the boardwalk by the golf club or at the picnic areas by the marina. A nice place to work. read more

Sitting alongside the St Johns River NAS JAX has a wonderful MWR outdoor facility that offers various fishing boats, kayaks, and even sailboats for rent. You can either use the ones docked in the water or you can trailer one off for the weekend! Last time I swung by the base it looked like they were expanding the Commissary and NEX facilities into a larger building so that will be great! Suggestions- Have your ID ready at the gate! The Naval Hospital is TERRIBLE. Go spend the $150 bucks if you have tricare out in town. My daughter (18 months) had 103.7 temperature and they took people after us first with wrist problema. How do you call this an emergency room. This isnt the first issue either. Everytine we come here and have issue after issue. They take there time for everything. I am telling you, DO NOT come here. read more

What a great event this is. This year it was at NAS (previously it had been at the beach) and the kids loved it. It was a great representation of America and our military. It shows just how great this country is. I was impressed with the tributes to the fallen soldiers and how they made sure to recognize those families giving them priority seating for the show. Of course the Blue Angels are what everyone goes to see, and people sit outside of the base to watch them perform. But, going on the base you see so much more, plus you can talk to the pilots and hear the commentary during the various flights. It was a great event. read more

F22 and the Blue Angels were awesome. Hands down one of the best airshows in the nation.
