It depends on your tastes and likes or dislikes. They are conveniently located right off of an exit ramp of route 8. Easy on & off access. 1st time at a Nardelli's. At first, I thought the prices were high. After trying my food I could tell they use quality products and didn't mind the price. I randomly pulled off the highway after seeing a billboard. I figured I'd grab a quick lunch. The location was fully staffed without about 5 or 6 employees. There was a steady stream of customers which they handled quickly. We ordered an Italian grinder and had some chips with it. We sat outside with the dog. I've been in Connecticut for 13 years and I've never been to a Nardelli's. Huge mistake on my part, I have definitely learned from it. I got parking when I pulled up right on the side. I walked in and there was a few people ahead of me. Stacey greeted me as soon as I came in and said she'll be right with me. She did a wonderful job of explaining my choices and getting the food prepared quickly. Tons of delicious choices in the food case. I changed my mind three times before I settled on the prosciutto hot pepper chicken grinder. Obviously I got it toasted to bring out more of the flavor. I decided to get a dessert. I originally picked up a red velvet cake. On my way back to the register I noticed the most amazing thing I've ever seen, Waffle rolled cheesecake! I filled up my cup with lemonade, thanked Stacey for her hospitality, and grabbed my food to go. Before pulling away I had to sample the waffle cheesecake. Nardelli's in Naugatuck is simply outstanding! When I arrived the staff was super attentive and friendly as I made my selections. I chose the vegan Italian grinder, which came piled high with vegan deli meat. They offer vegan shredded cheese and mayo as well. There is also a vegan chick'n sandwich recently added to the menu. I was dead set on the cold cut sub but I passed a billboard along my drive in which showed the chick'n sub. The deli is full of nostalgic pictures on the wall about the history of the area as well as celebrating Nardelli's own place in that history of the past 100 years serving up delicious food. Nardelli's has a place in my history as well. I remember stopping several times at another Nardelli's location just off the highway as a kid. My father and I would share a sandwich, a bag of chips, and a couple sodas. It was always a welcome sight after a long ride up from Pennsylvania on our way to Massachusetts. If you are local to CT, there is no way you have not heard of the famous grinder (sub/sandwich) shop! They have been famously featured on many touristy informationals and even on tv/news outlet and outrightly deservedly so! They have been such a CT staple that their interior decor is still vintage and gives a really cool retro feeling if you decide to eat on the spot Nardelli's serve a variety of sandwich options and sides for you to pick for - the choices are endless and every time you stop by you are tempted to try something new because nothing disappoints! I got my usual Italian combo - this menu item is recommended by Nardelli's themselves and as you can guess, within first bite you can find out why! The sandwich is packed with meats and has veggies/sauces to balance it. It's so packed you feel disappointed by all the other sandwiches you may have ordered from competitor shops and you will never stray away from being a Nardelli's patrons. I also got to try a new sandwich this time - shaved steak and cheese grinder - this reminds me of those Philly cheesesteak except CT style. I think I might prefer this because the shaved steak is cut in much smaller pieces and comes with lettuce/tomato/mayo/olive/etc which balances the meats great. I would definitely order this again! The shoppe is deceiving from the outside. I wouldn't expect much but the second I walked in, I was immediately charmed by the staff, the fresh food in the deli cases and the family business vibe. The women behind the counter were friendly and energetic. They helped me pick out a loaded steak grinder. It was gigantic! I was grateful to be splitting it with my husband. The bread was fresh and the ingredients were so well balanced. The real star of the show was the cheesecake waffle cone. We had a coupon to honor Nardelli's 100 year anniversary- three full grinders (no plant-based subs per the coupon- no worries there) for $19.22. Excellent sandwiches made exactly as specified. My go-to is the Buffalo chicken (with blue cheese), my husband opted for the classic Italian, and my son enjoyed his turkey and cheese- Mayo only. My daughter ordered Mac and cheese, which they offer cold or warmed. She also wanted a Caesar salad with chicken, which wasn't in the case, so the gentleman waiting on me made it to order. I wish I got his name- he provided the best service that I have ever encountered in ANY food establishment (he was thin with short hair and glasses). They also provided commemorative plastic cups for the same price as their regular fountain drinks. Refills will only be $0.99 in the future. I will remember to keep my cup handy when driving by coming home from work daily. Of note- if you get the coupon- it is only valid at the Naugatuck, Southbury or Oxford stores. Nothing fresh, all premade, sub par ingredients, the eggplant was flavorless mush that soaked the bread and a bunch of hard, unthawed chunks. Barely any cheese and it all congealed into a disgusting slurry. The sauce was "Ragu reject" not allowed in reform school or Iranian prison cafeterias. Never again. read more

Great food, quick service, friendly staff and very affordable prices! I've been here a few different times and tried the grilled chicken wrap, Italian grinder and buffalo chicken wrap. They were all delicious and made fresh. There's also a great selection in the glass case area of the deli and I definitely want to go back to try something there. The desserts also look amazing!! They have options like cannolis, rice pudding, pies and more. If I wasn't trying to cut back on desserts I would've tried one because they looked very tasty! read more

If this shop is what passes for food in the Naugatuck Valley, I recommend you get the F out and run away! I wandered off of Route 8 one day, hungry and decided to try it... While you're outside of the place, it looks intriguing and like it has potential. The inside appears clean, however the staff seemed uncapable or unwilling to do their jobs well, much less be hospitable or welcoming. When I was there (at 2:50pm on a Monday), there was a staff of 4, and yet there was a line of about 3 other parties that took 15-mins. I decided to try the "eggplant-chicken-parm special", because it sounded good when I read the wipe off sign by the front door. I asked for "a whole grinder of it" because I was very hungry, and was told "it's only available in a half". I then asked "well, can I get two halves?" and was told "no, that would have to be two specials". I chose macaroni salad as my side, and found a 2/3-full styrofoam cup when I sat down to eat (see photo)....remember earlier, when I told the clerk I was hungry? My grinder was crap. Messy, slimy, sloppy and unappetizing.....not to mention it didn't taste very good. Their 'sauce' tastes a lot more like the can it came out of....a lot like the garbage you probably received in the Elementary School lunch line. The chicken was dried out on the inside, yet slimy and slathered with red goop on the outside. The eggplant was tasty, but slimy as all get-out, and not helped one bit by the sauce it was slathered with. Oh yes, and there was some type of 'cheese' somewhere involved, but there wasn't enough of it for you to even taste it, you could only see it. I will give them credit that they had a very very good selection of bottled drinks including numerous flavors of bottled seltzer. My friend who was with me ordered their 'Italian' whole grinder, and complained that he got hot peppers instead of the roasted peppers he ordered. This made his sandwich almost unedible for his sissy taste buds...so I tried some of his second-half, since I was hungry. Once I threw out the soggy, wet bread and resorted to eating the meat with my bare hands (no utensils in the bag). The 'Italian meats' weren't half bad, but they were no better then Subway. Then finally, to top it off, I took a rice pudding. Thank God I had a spoon in the glove compartment. However the container was about 2/3 whipped cream to 1/3 rice pudding. Not enough to justify being charged anything more than $0.25 for it. My total for the special was more than $13 despite only getting a half grinder, a tiny side of mac salad, a bottle of seltzer and a cup of mostly whipped cream. What a rip off! This would have all been okay if it least the food and service was good... Whew! read more

Most likely will not be returning to Nardelli's Grinder Shoppe, have gone to them so many times and repeatedly get a sub-par sandwiches, no matter what is ordered, I always feel like they need another chance, not anymore. They don't listen to how you would like your sandwich made (I never ask for anything unusual) and the price of the grinders do not match the content of the grinder. I understand prices have gone up, but they are really not interested in the quality of their sandwiches anymore. The employees are not friendly and are more concerned about themselves than the customers. If there was a Dibella's or a good family owned Deli close to the Naugatuck Nardelli's, they would have to step up their game (quality, quantity and employees attitudes) alot. read more

My husband and I were driving from Maryland to New Hampshire and needed a place to stop that wasn't too far off the highway and we lucked upon this place!!! The first thing I would mention is that they have great customer service!!! We literally walked in 5 minutes before they were closing and even though they were cleaning and packing up, they were more than courteous and helped us with everything without any complaints. And let me tell you about their sandwiches...they are huge! We accidentally ordered two but we really should have shared one because they are that big and the bread is super yummy!!! They know how to build a grinder! It can be a bit overwhelming your 1st time as there are so many choices & the customers are regulars- they are decisive & quick about ordering. Take your time to peruse the menu rather than being hasty & miss something you later wish you hadn't! The rolls are very fresh, the mix of onions, cucumbers, oregano, s & p , oil & vinegar mix that they add to your grinder is a must! As are the hot peppers if you like it a bit spicy. The cold cuts & cheeses are fresh, sliced to order & piled nicely onto your grinder. I only had a cold grinder served on butcher's paper, w chips & a Snapple. And they are open much later (i.e., 8 or 9 pm) than other delis which is extremely convenient for my schedule. They have impressive deli menu of many freshly made Italian specialities and sandwiches. The deli display is quite impressive, everything looked very fresh and great presentation on display... and a little overwhelming if you've never been here before. (But not a bad thing, just took me a while to pick what I wanted). Today I happen to order Uber eats delivery. I received my food in a timely manner but as I took out the grinder something seemed off. I opened it and as I suspected it was a half grinder when I ordered a full grinder. Typically I am very tolerant to mistakes made and stuff happens but not only was this a half grinder, the half grinder was cut in half. I find this absolutely absurd when I paid pull price. I will gladly send people pictures of the grinder I got and the receipt from my order. I ordered a Italian Whole Grain Panini over the phone. I picked it up and went home to have lunch. I found I was given a Italian on white grinder roll. Being diabetic I didn't want to eat it. I called and talked to one of the owners and she had them make one the way I ordered it and had them drive it to my house in Naugatuck. Now that's great customer service. Seriously though, one of the best Italian sammich I've ever eaten was at this place. I seriously wish they'd open one of these spots in Tampa. I'd gain so much weight. When you bite into one of their Italian grindahs, you can taste each of the individual meats, and the provolone cheese is so sharp, it will cut your tongue. And the bread... Goodness, you just can't get bread like that south of the Mason-Dixon Line. If you're unfortunate enough to live in this underwhelming city, you can at least be proud of one thing--NARDELI'S.
