It was the offseason so things are slow and rates are comparatively lower than high season. I rented a Corolla for a couple of days. It was a newer car with about 6k mileage and was clean inside and out. It was an easy process, fill out paperwork at the counter and walk out a couple of hundred yards to the rental lot to get the car. I needed to extend the rental. It was handled quickly over the phone and they even changed it the lower weekly rate without my even asking. The agent was a very pleasant guy. After I dropped off the car I realized I had forgotten something at the place I had been staying. The agent had someone drive me round trip back to get my item at no extra charge. I of course tipped the driver. I would definitely rent from Windmill again. read more

The help when I called to advise we are on the ferry as requested was very poor. I was asked for normal details like DL, expiry, DOB as expected. Then jt went south. The reservation said: "If you are arriving by ferry, you need to inform us in advance so your reservation can be noted. You will also need to call after arriving at the boat at the mainland dock before departure informing us that you will be boarding, and the boat is running on or near schedule." I called as requested and advised the name of the ferry service, and that we were departing on time as asked. Then I was asked for the arrival time and I said "I don't know" . Then "it should be on your ticket." I reopened the QR ticket and it wasn't there. So I said "it's not here can you look it up?" "No I am too busy." I explained that then you would then have to hold if you make me look it up. She then made me look up the schedule online. It would have been better customer service if A. They had the schedules for the ferries available to manage their normal business. B. She said "sure let me help you" and looked the arrival up since I was a newbie to ferry's to Nantucket. read more

We were looking for a last minute Jeep rental to explore the island and Nantucket Windmill Auto Rental took care of us! Renting was easy - (I booked online the day before ) and pricing was slightly cheaper than other places! Best of all they delivered the Jeep directly to us at our inn! The Jeep was newer, clean and ready to go upon arrival at designated time! We literally signed the paperwork in the inns parking lot and we're on our way within 5 mins! It couldn't have been any easier! It was one of our favorite things we did while on Nantucket! Being able to check out the entire island and drive on the beaches was amazing! Return was just as easy! I will start by saying that our experience was partly good, partly bad. But I can't give more than 2 stars. Sharica was very nice to work with. She was knowledgeable and helpful as we were traveling over by ferry for the first time. She assured us that we would be able to secure a Jeep last minute and to call in the morning. That's where the good ends. The next day we called on our way over and we were told they were out of jeeps. After being on hold for almost a half an hour and talking to the gentleman he then lamented and said he did have one. At first, it was a two door and then it was a four-door. It was like he did not know his stock. Once we got off the ferry, we were met at the pier. He had an accent and at times was a little difficult to understand, however, when we asked for clarification of what he was saying, he was extremely rude and snippy with us. (Ex. That's what I said, blah blah). We then asked him how to remove the soft top and he basically told us that we were too stupid to understand how, and did not show us. Thankfully, another person that met us on the island owns a jeep and was able to remove the top for us. The removal and the attachment was very easy and basic that a child could've understood it. But apparently this gentleman thought two women could not figure it out. They provide the gauge to deflate your tires in order to drive on the beach, but he did not explain where we would be able to reinflate or what our options were to do that. Overall, I found the experience with him to be absolutely horrible, and I believe that he treats people like that because he knows there aren't many places to rent those from on the island, and so people are pretty much stuck with them as their only option. Next time I'll plan better and I'll rent on the mainland and bring it over on the ferry. It would be cheaper and I won't have to deal with him. Buyer Beware! I own a property on island and decided to rent a car with my husband for the July 4 holiday week. Everything was fine until (days after driving the car) a rep from Windmill stopped my husband in the Stop and Shop parking on Sparks Ave (weird enough) and told him there was no contract on the car and the car had been reported stolen. (WTH?). My husband provided the rep with our on island name and address, in addition, stating that we reserved the car months ago, our credit card and licenses had been recorded, a Windmill rep had literally handed him the keys and pointed him to the vehicle. Rep seems satisfied and drives away. It gets more bizarre. A few days later I'm in my driveway around 6pm. As I get ready to pull out a large black SUV roars up and literally blocks me in, Hawaii 5-O style. A diminutive woman, who I'm assuming was his wife, was the driver. I almost laughed. A white haired man in his 80s gets out of the passenger seat and informs me "the car has no contract and has been reported stolen." He failed to initially identify himself but I assumed he was another unprofessional goofball from Windmill. I argued with him for a few minutes and asked my husband to step outside. Attempting to logically reason with this man was impossible. He asked us to present a contract (after reiterating again that the car had been reported stolen.) I used a few choice words ($&@") , pointing to myself and my husband (in our early 60s) and asked him "do we look like car thieves?" WTH. My husband went to retrieve the contract and this gent proceeds to get even more agitated, stating that he was going to "call the police." I told him "if you thought we were car thieves that probably should have been your first step, Sherlock." I encouraged him to call NPD, as this whole scenario was going sideways fast. NPD showed up with their lights flashing. My neighbors were now at their windows with popcorn, invested in this drama. The incredibly patient patrolman asked the Windmill rep if it "was possible your front office lost or misplaced the contract?" Windmill goof states "no, impossible." He then proceeds to inform us that someone from his shop would be arriving with paperwork. In the meantime I have my credit card company on the line, confirming, via speakerphone (for the patrolman and Windmill goober to hear) that our credit card was indeed swiped on the day my husband picked up the car. Another Windmill rep finally drives up to our house and informs Sherlock Holmes (now identifying himself as Peter Conlon, President of Windmill) that they had inadvertently switched our reservation with another reservation....and the car was indeed legally contracted. Sherlock offers no true apologies and tells us "we are free to go." I retort "thank you, Officer." As he heads back to his SUV he asks the patrolman his name and badge number. Classic. Offensive? I have been renting from Windmill for years - have always been very pleased. They offer a great array of cars, in pristine condition, and their prices are competitive. Reserving, pickups, and returns were easy and any questions I had were quickly answered, and by a real person. Service has always been friendly and professional. I believe it's the best bet on the island. I have been going up to Nantucket every fall to fish. I always rent an SUV for the week. I have had consistently good experiences with the vehicles and the staff. It's very convenient to receive the vehicle if flying in and or coming in by ferry, if you arrive by 3:00 Pm. If you arrive by ferry after that you will have to grab a cab to the airport to pick up the vehicle. I recomends Windmill based on a lot of experiences on the island. Btw Nantucket is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Fishing off the beach is amazing but the over abundance of seals will test your patience. read more

DON'T rent from Nantucket Windmill Auto Rental. I drove less than 20 miles on my rental car across my 6 day rental period and returned the car in the same condition as I received it. Two days after I returned the car, I got an email from Nantucket Windmill Auto Rental saying that I destroyed one of the tires and needed to pay for the damage. They sent me pictures of the car from two days after my return- how do I know that they didn't ruin the tire after I returned it and blaming it on me? They're demanding that I pay them without providing me legitimate proof or even an invoice from the tire repair shop. My entire experience with them has been sketchy. BUYER BEWARE!! Carefully read the reviews of Windmill Auto before renting. My partner reserved a Jeep weeks ahead of our trip. On the day we arrived we called Windmill and an employee revealed that the Jeep "had not been returned" and that they could not contact the driver but that Windmill Auto would rent us a Toyota Corolla until the Jeep arrived. Additionally, they stated that Windmill Auto would deliver the Jeep to us. Also, Windmill Auto claimed it did not have any other Jeeps to rent. However, when he picked up the Corolla, which had a malfunctioning SiriusXM gracenote there was a Jeep in the Windmill Rental parking lot parked alongside the Corolla. Despite Windmill Auto assuring us they would deliver a Jeep, Windmill Auto never delivered one or contacted my partner with an update. When we returned to Windmill Auto to check on the status we noticed the same Jeep was still parked in the lot in the same parking space. We were told a police report was filed for the Jeep and that we would be contacted when it arrived to Windmill Auto. When we asked about other Jeeps Windmill Auto claimed it had no other ones because all of its other Jeeps were also "stolen" but that one would be delivered to us. After a car was not delivered my partner called Windmill Auto and he was yelled at by the owner Raymond and told "if I had 12 Jeeps I would never give you one". Then he tried to intimidate him and demanded he tell the owner where we were so that he could take back the Corolla before the end of his reservation. We suspect this is a common bait-and-switch scheme of Windmill Auto to allow customers to reserve a Jeep and entice them with a lower amount and only once they arrive on the island to tell them their Jeep hasn't arrived so that they have no options and then agree to pay for another car that is less likely to be rented but are lower cost for Windmill Auto. If your trip requires you to have an over-sand vehicle do yourself a favor and rent elsewhere. read more

My mid-May rental couldn't have been better. They dropped off a brand new Rav 4 with 50 miles on it right in front of the Inn where I was staying, and they drove me back to the Inn when I brought the car back the next day. My experience with Nantucket Windmill Auto Rental had left a bad taste in my mouth. We arrived at the fast ferry at the time designated to our reservation and was told to meet the driver in front of the Tavern. Turns out the very rude NWAR representative misdirected us and we were told by another representative that we were misdirected and to wait at the flagpole outside the fast ferry terminal. 40 minutes later I called to ask where the driver was and was connected to the rude rep once again. Was told I gave her the wrong information and that the driver was coming and to just wait. No apology, nothing. Soon after the driver came and was quite pleased with the car and the efficiency of the driver. Wait..of course it wouldn't just end there. When it came time to drop the car off we were told to call once we got close to airport and park out front and a driver would be sent out. We parked and waited and then received a phone call to tell us to now drop the car off at the rental lot with no directions on how to get there. We were to,d a driver would be waiting for us. Note that there are no signs except for the rental car parking lot. I looped around 3x until finally a NWAR driver pointed out the driver that was to take us back to the ferry. If you realize we're at the location and having a hard time finding, please practice courtesy and call us or look out for us to help. I relayed my experience with the driver and he had told me that certain girls have received complaints about their rudeness. He also told me that I should be charged less than the amount told but, of course, that was misinformation as well. I was fully charged. Hope this review may help with a new position for these ladies in a service that would not allow them any interaction with the public. I've been traveling to Nantucket for years and should have known better - the rental process was so inefficient - for a one day rental for (2) jeeps, we were on the phone with Windmill a number of times because they don't properly record confirmation information and pick up/drop off logistics. First, they processed my reservation for the wrong day - I would have been able to correct this but they don't send a confirmation email unless you request it. They were over an hour late for the drop off to our house and the driver called asking me for directions to the house...as a renter who arrived to the house the evening before in the dark via taxi, I didn't know the directions. During our conversation he actually asked "are you near the ocean", as if that would help him find our house. We were also told we could drop the jeeps at the ferry and they would be picked up there. We called that morning to let them know the location - the woman we spoke with was discourteous, unprofessional and indicated that we should not have been told to drop the cars where we did. From start to finish, each person we spoke to restated and correct policies provided to us by other Windmill employees - never rent from them, there are several other reputable, courteous and efficient (Young's and Island Auto) who know what they are actually doing. read more

I booked a Jeep rental for a week day in July. I received an email confirmation of the rental. On the bottom of the confirmation was a statement that said the reservation was guaranteed. Then 24 hours later I was told that there was magically a 3 day minimum on the rental which was not stated at the time of my booking and that my guaranteed reservation had been automatically changed to a quote/estimate. At the time of my booking I provided a method of payment as well. I called and asked to speak with the manager, Robin. She did not stand by her companies mistake. She also did not acknowledge the mistake. Based on the fact that the goal was to do over the sand driving and no other vehicle would be meeting that need, the offer to rent me a different vehicle for the day clearly did not meet my needs. I believe this is awful business ethics. Based on this I canceled my reservation. I will not use this company. I would suggest utilizing other sources in the future to anyone considering renting. I find this method of conducting business completely unacceptable . Its my sincere hope that future customs avoid this business and take their business elsewhere to owners and managers that value their customers. read more

My family has a house on-island but we don't keep a car there. As such, I rent from Windmill all the time and have never had an issue; they're courteous, accommodating, and prices are always fair. Today, however, they went above and beyond and provided me with a major service. I realized, right before my ferry from ACK to New Bedford docked, that I'd left my car/house/life keys in the cup holder of the car I'd been renting ... a two-hour boat ride away on Nantucket. I called Windmill in a panic to confirm my error, and Robin offered to send my keys (which had been found) on the next flight to New Bedford. I met my keys at the airport 90 minutes later and can now begin my drive home. If Hertz still has cars, stay away from Nantucket Windmill Auto Rental. We just rented a car from Nantucket Windmill Auto Rental this past weekend. Nantucket Windmill Auto Rental was the only dark spot in an otherwise wonderful weekend. The car was fine. But as folks who have been to Nantucket will tell you - it's not the experience itself that will get you - it's the logistics of getting there and paying for it. Windmill was more expensive that the other options (but the only cars left) and complicated our logistics. Moreover, the staff was consistently rude. Before we returned the car, we called to inquire as to when the free shuttle to the ferry (as advertised) would be running. They said the last ran at 4PM. So we showed up at 3:30 to leave plenty of time. When we got there, the rep behind the desk informed us that it would be an hour and a half (5:30) before she could get someone to take us. She then said that we "should have made arrangements before getting here if you wanted the free shuttle." When we explained that we had called ahead of time she said "well, there's nothing I can do for you." We ended up paying for a cab. read more

This was my first time renting a car on Nantucket and I'm glad I disregarded the terrible reviews. They quoted me for the lowest price on the island (not cheap, but still the cheapest). The rental process was a breeze, we were on our way in less than five minutes. Car was impeccable, a seemingly brand new Toyota Camry. They were also accommodating when we called to extend the rental for two extra days. We were charged exactly what we were quoted and there were no sketchy fees or charges after the fact. They also tried to charge us for extra drivers that were not necessary. They removed the extra drivers but still charged us an extra day. The advertising is very misleading. They DO NOT deliver the car to you at the ferry. They pick you up and shuttle you to the airport to get your car. Then you need to return the car to the airport and they will shuttle you back to the ferry. Nowhere near the convenience they advertise. read more

My husband and I just returned from Nantucket yesterday. Before we arrived on the island we called Nantucket Windmill Auto rental and reserved a car. When we got off the boat the car was right there waiting for us. We had a great time driving all over the island. When we returned that evening to our hotel I noticed that I couldn't find the key to the car. I panicked because we had a dinner reservation in an hour. I called Windmill and told them. They said no problem we will come to your hotel with another key. In minutes they showed up and we were off to dinner. We found the key the next day. Now that is good service. read more

I tried to call two days in a row during business hours and left two messages for a return call and they did not even bother to return it. When they are supposedly the only car rental service in the off season, it makes it very difficult to do business on this island when you cannot even get a car. Absolutely HORRIBLE rental agency. Please never rent from this company. I rented in April, 2016 in the Offseason. The ferry schedule is obviously sporadic during this time. They dropped off the car for us at our ferry when it arrived at 10:10 on Friday, our return ferry on Monday did not leave until until 1:25. I was told I would only be charged for the 3 days, but to my surprise the company charged me a full extra day for the extra 3 hours I had the car. When I called to dispute this charge, they provided absolutely no help. They did not acknowledge the conflicting information I received from their representatives. They also said that the people that drop off the cars are just "drivers" and don't deal with the contracts so they don't know the policies. This is ridiculous since they are representatives of their company and they provided me with the contract I signed. I'll be taking my car over on the ferry next time, since this was obviously not a more affordable option. read more

Had a slight problem getting the convertible top down on the mini that I rented but the gentleman at windmills cleaning facility was more than able and willing to help resolve the issue. Rented from them based on reading reviews but boy something has changed since any positive reviews were written. Terrible customer service. Sent an email requesting a car and pick up at the ferry. Never heard back so I sent another email and to which they responded and confirmed my reservation. Arrived in Nantucket on the ferry and as I was stepping off ferry I received a call asking where I was as I had 2 reservations. Told them I only needed one and they said I needed to come to the airport to p/u the car - they did provide transport to the airport. When I walked up to counter the guy said "which reservation do you want, the one you made on May 20th at 7pm or the one on June lst at 8pm? I explained about the two emails, asked him to check his system at which point he said it did not matter. Did the paperwork and I asked for a map and he said, "I have maps, do you want one?" in the snottiest voice! We could not believe how rude he was! I ask him about returning the car and he says, "call Sunday morning if we have staff you can leave it at the ferry, if not, you'll have to come back here" So Sunday rolls around, I call the office and a gal answers and I ask about what to do with the car. She tells me I need to leave it in the Stop and Shop parking lot and call after I've found a parking space and then hangs up! No goodbye, thank you, any ?'s. So I call back and say we are trying to estimate time needed and will I be meeting someone to drop off the keys or what, she repeats, just call after you find a parking space and I'll tell you what to do. We go to try and park and there were no parking spaces! We drove around the parking lot for over 1/2 hour with no luck. I call her and ask what the options are and she states there are none! That I have to keep circling until I find a parking space. I tell her we are booked on the ferry (which is sold out) to which she replies, "Don't know what to tell you, that is the only place you can leave it" So 50 minutes of waiting we finally get a space, I call her back and she tells me to leave the keys in the visor and then yells," And whatever you do don't lock the car!!" There are two other options on Nantucket to rent a car, I would never rent from these people again. read more
