H to the Izzo. V to the Izzay. I remember the first time I travelled to Newcastle with my boyfriend…read moreto meet his family. Mention Islington or "Izzo" for short, and you were met with a look and a sheesh sound. "It's not a part of town you want to be." Fast-forward a few years and Islington is turning herself around. There's Suspension Coffee that started it all and the newest mark on the map, Madame Mo's. I stopped in for lunch on a Thursday to be greeted by one other customer. No sweat, that's just more dumplings for me. Madame Mo's is a curious combination of grocer (complete with a few shelves of Japanese specialty items), tea and dumpling restaurant. The setup isn't fancy but neither is Islington so it works. Entrees, despite being named exotic, are fairly standard. Miso Soup, Wasabi Green Peas and edamame beans aren't too unfamiliar for a dumpling restaurant. Your dumpling options are split into Tibetan and Japanese. It's unclear if Madame Mo is Japanese, Tibetan or Chinese. I opt for a mix of 8 which let's me try two each of the Tibetan Lamb, vegetable dumplings and the Japanese pork, and vegetable dumplings. Being one of only two customers, the service is attentive and my "Curly Clouds" green tea is delivered and quickly followed by the dumplings. They're freshly steamed and the hint of ginger in the Japanese vegetable dumpling is quite the zing, but the one I'd suggest anyone tries here is the Tibetan vegetable. It's plump and moist in your mouth. The waitress does a great job to try and convince me to order another round of dumplings but I'm tapping out. There's not even room for some of their green tea ice cream. Pro Tip: Tibetan vegetable dumpling. All of the Tibetan vegetable dumpling.

The one star is really for the food. This place has a good selection of teas and a nice ambience…read more However, the food I ordered was atrocious. The dumplings were really doughy with a far too thick skin that was not properly cooked - anyone who appreciates a good dumpling would be advised to avoid them. To top it off, the meat bun I ordered was a packet frozen one! It really feels like they are just trying to jump on the dumpling train and cash in on the trend. When I mentioned these problems with the food, they chose to argue instead if take notice of the feedback. Whilst admitting to the frozen steam bun, their counter to the poor dumplings was that they had been made fresh that morning. As if that should make it alright. It makes no difference when they are made if they are made poorly in the first place. That said, if you want a cozy space in the area for a nice cup of tea, then Mo's is more than adequate with some curios to view on the way out. But I have never been back for a bite to eat.

Waited like over 30 minutes on a Sunday and they charge you a fee of I believe 10%, which I don't…read morequite understand the reasoning for this fee. I thought the wait and C raving about how good this place is meant it was good, well IMO....NOPE. Ordered the following items: Zha Jiang Noodles - eh, probably the worse I have tried. Stir Fried Clams with X.O sauce - wanted a better flavour Xiao Long Bao Pork - okay the skin is way thicker than DTF and not sure if there is DTF, why go to this place. However, I don't recommend DTF in Westfield Chatswood. Dipping sauce for this sucks too. Nothing to put your sauce in and no offer of fresh ginger. Steamed Lion's Head meatball with Crab - I've tried other versions of this and this is the only thing I didn't mind. It didn't wow me, but I appreciate the homey feel of this dish. Pork Belly Steamed Buns - OMG and this is not a good way. I can't with these buns here - disgusting. Pork Belly is super dry and it's supposed to be Pork Belly and the cucumber was cut too thick and too dry tasting as well. Worse buns ever too! I don't get this place nor the high reviews.

You know the satisfaction you get when you pop a super ripe pimple? That level of joy should be experienced when biting into a slightly cooled soup dumpling, but instead u get to bite into deflated balloons filled with bland pork. Blah. So effing blah.

Cheap, cheap, cheap! Come here if you want a cheap snack/meal. Buns are $1.50 each, so you can be…read morecomfortably full under $5, or stuff yourself for under 10. They're not amazing but I didn't mind for the price. Pork buns were apparently pretty average, had onions no ginger, and too much soy sauce. They were also cold but it was near closing so the shop had run out of a lot of choices and also why they were cold. My vegetarian buns were still warm though! And they were in a cute leaf shape. Tasted good and had a variety of veggies in there. But the one to get here is definitely the pumpkin and tofu bun. These were very nice and slightly sweet. I quite enjoyed the black sesame bun also, however as with all the buns (and probably a major reason as to why they're so cheap) the filling was very minimal and most of it was the bun itself. Also there is no seating so you can sit at one of the tables outside the centre, or just take it home to eat.

Blink and you'll miss it, this tiny shopfront is stacked floor to ceiling with buns, steamer baskets and huge sacks of flour. Don't let the WHS committee know because this is where I carb up before getting out to battle for the freshest bunch of bok choy. The menu is a simply two black and white printed sheets of A4 displayed on the countertop which lists all sorts of sweet and savoury, filled and plain bao, as well as fried bread sticks and fresh soy milk, with most things giving you change from a $2 coin. That's right folks, this is bao - hipster level food - for tuck shop money. Most people get the pork buns but be adventurous and try their black sesame bun; soft pillowy bao encasing a gloriously nutty, black as night sesame filling. If you're lucky it'll be fresh out of the steamer and ready to scald your lips and fingers. Ah that hurt tastes soooo good.
