**A hidden gem in San Diego -- and one worth seeking out!**
First things first: **NandosHotbox is NOT to be confused with Nando's Taco Shop!** We had the pleasure of meeting the team when they came to our apartment complex, and between the incredible food, generous portions, fair prices, and genuinely wonderful conversation, we left wanting to do our small part to help them on their journey toward opening a brick-and-mortar location.
We started with the **Nando's Chips with DOUBLE carne asada**, and WOW. The chips were thick, perfectly salty, and--perhaps most impressively--still hadn't gotten soggy even after about 30 minutes. They held up beautifully!
The double carne asada was absolutely loaded on top. The meat had these slightly crunchy, beautifully charred bits of fat, plenty of salt, and so much flavor. Every bite was incredibly satisfying. The portions were generous, and the fresh cheese, guacamole, and salsa added vibrant, fresh flavors that brought everything together perfectly. And as someone who appreciates food that isn't afraid to be properly seasoned, I absolutely loved the amount of salt!
We also had to try **Munchies Box #1** so we could sample all of their different meats: **birria, al pastor, chicken, carne asada, and adobada**.
Honestly, every single one was fantastic. But if I had to choose a standout, the **birria absolutely stole the show**. It immediately transported me back to the flavors I remember from Puerto Vallarta--rich, deeply flavorful, smoky, and, importantly, **not sweet at all**. Just incredibly savory, authentic-tasting, delicious birria that kept me coming back for more.
Beyond the food, one of the best parts of the experience was simply talking with the people behind NandosHotbox and hearing their story. You can feel the passion behind what they're building. When you combine that with genuinely delicious food, generous portions, and prices that feel more than fair, it's impossible not to root for them.
**NandosHotbox is clearly building something special.** We sincerely hope their journey to opening a brick-and-mortar location is a successful one, because based on our experience, San Diego needs more of this.
We'll definitely be keeping an eye out for them--and coming back hungry! read more
