Did the gastown food tour with Dina…read more The good: -Dina was super awesome. Friendly, funny and super attentive kind spirit (I sound like such a hippie). We told her we were planning a picnic for the next day and not only did she tell us about Grandville Island and it's amazing market, she handwrote us a shopping list on what items to get for an amazing picnic(it was delish). - The food was awesome. We visited four places and each was pretty good. My favorite was the Meat and Bread sandwich. As someone who is trying to give up pork (and failing miserably) I just want to point out that two our of the four places had pork dishes, so if you have dietary needs/preference, let them know ahead of time so they can pick items to accommodate you (they partner with 8 different restaurants so there are plenty of food options). I also loved that many of the restaurants they choose partner with local farms. - My hubbie and I were lucky that we had an awesome group and everyone was super friendly and lovely. The bad: None! Final verdict: Will try to downtown when (not if) I return to Vancouver.

I love doing food tours when I'm in a new city as they offer me an opportunity to sample…read more(presumably) some of the best cuisine that the area has to offer. Carlos, the owner, was nice enough to let a friend and me join the Gastown tour at the last minute. We met our guide, Cassandra, as well as the other two people on the tour at the Waterfront train station. Our first stop - Rogue Kitchen and Bar - was at the station and then we walked several blocks down to "Blood Alley" for a "wine and cheese" tasting at Salt. That was followed by Caribbean cuisine at Calabash, and finally, modern Chinese food at Bambuddah. All of the tastings were paired with alcoholic beverages, or non-alcoholic drinks upon request. 1. Rogue Kitchen and Bar 3 local beers - red truck lager, fat tug IPA, and blue buck pale ale Fried Brussels sprouts Bang bang chicken Lobster mac and cheese 2. Salt tasting room Three wines or specialty fizzes (orange, guava, and black currant) Goat cheese, organic honey, sicilian salami, dried cherries, corned beef, and mustard. 3. Calabash Ginger beer, rum, nutmeg cocktail Chicken skewers, veggie/chicken/beef patties, plantain chips 4. Bambudda Tsui Hang which is a cold tea made with Budweiser syrup, iron buddha tea, and moondog bitters Chicken skin, duck bun and cherries, and rice pudding with banana puree, pineapples, and almonds. Although we had a nice time and great company, this tour wasn't the best value. It was very expensive - $105 CAD - as far as food tours go and there was little more to this 3-hour tour than just going from place to place to eat (and drink). Most tours include more information on the surrounding area, discussion (or tasting) of the local cuisine, and perhaps a chance to meet the chefs or to learn about the restaurants. Also, I think that the price should be cheaper for people who do not partake in the alcoholic offerings. So, -1 star for the value and -1 star for the guide.

He also balances the tour (about six stops) with anecdotes about the history of Victoria and how immigration built a food culture - adding immensely to the experience. You'll definitely feel full after the tour so plan on a lighter lunch and dinner!

And he works hard to have six of the tastiest treats you'd want to try, ready at just the right time as you walk through Victoria. He even helped one shop prepare their Matcha lemonade for us when they were overrun with customers! Besides the lemonade, we had a fantastic meatball, terrific spring roll, Filipino pastry, delicious Korean fried chicken, and a top quality chocolate. We did NOT need to buy dinner that night, either. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! Easily 5+ stars. We'd repeat this tour next time we come. Thanks Andy!!

This was a food tour worth joining in on! We started off at…read morethe Waterfront station where we learned some of the Vancouver history about this port town. We walked over to the Steam works bar first where we tried their brewed beers and cider. Then off to stop 2 Guu where we had thier dark meet fried chicken, then off to see the steam clock which is part of the gastown current history. Next we stopped at a french resturant Petrichor Social, and had sausage and mashed potato. (my least fav of all places) then off to MEET for a grilled cauliflower in a terriaki sauce, it was very good, however I wished we had a place to sit and eat it instead of standing. Then we walked over to 6 Six Acres Poutine the local favorate but not mine. Walked about a block to Brioche where we had the best of the items tortolini with a meat sauce and a piece of perfectly made bread !! Then to a milk cream shop Soft Peak where we had a mango ice milk. Then the last spot was a waffle shop. Waffleland Cafe where we had fresh made little waffle with strawberrys and whipped cream. All together 2.5 hours of tour, 8 spots to try with wine or beer at most spots where we had savory food and a really great guide who did an excelent job of teaching us about the Gastown area . Thanks Chirug (Happy Carpet) :) for a fun filled afternoon!

Not only can you not lose because this is a FREE tour...but you will gain so much interesting info!…read more I'm sure hopping on and off a bus would be just fine, but for us, with just one short day in this vast city, we were looking for a quick connection, and that's exactly what we got on this recent Sunday. We met our tour guide, Ali at the designated time (11am) at the designated place, and 20 or so of us enjoyed an incredibly interesting walking tour of Chinatown. There is no way we would have gotten the feel for this city had we not taken this tour. Several folks were repeat tour guy visitors, so they must have enjoyed those as well. Our group had folks from several countries. It is a relaxed tour at a pace that is just right...not too fast and not too slow. Seriously, just right! And absolutely everyone in our group was happy to hand over generous thank you tips. Well-deserved. Ali was kind enough at the end of the tour to guide anyone who wanted dining suggestions or directions. For us, he was even kind enough to let us walk along with him since we were heading in the same direction. As a result, we were fortunate enough to get an extended tour, as he remained a wealth of Vancouver info as we went along. Highly recommend!

She pointed out some places of interest, told us the history of Chinatown, took us to a herbal store, and ended the tour at the Chinese Gardens. I love these type of tours because they are given by people who have lived there for a good amount of time, and who are passionate about what they are presenting. She was no exception.

Zack took an incredible amount of time for our tour and gave us a personalized adventure.  We were also blessed to see whales, porpoise, urchins, starfish,  seals, sea lions. He knew all the places to go and gave such an amazing insight of the different islands and mountains. He also gave us snacks and beverages from locally sourced places. Literally we could not have asked for better and it was even more amazing than we could have imagined.  When we come back we will ONLY book here.

Once we were on our way, the learning began! Did you know that oysters are one of the most sustainable forms of aquaculture? Or that one little oyster filters a bathtub of water per day, keeping our oceans clean, pristine, fresh and beautiful? We learned so many incredible facts about his family oyster farm, the innovation they are adding to the industry, oysters as a species and the local aquaculture. The boat has both inside cabin space and outside deck space, making it great to enjoy the sea breeze and spray, but also shade from the hot sun. Captain Zach has an incredibly deep knowledge of the Discovery Islands and Desolation Sound, pointing out mountains, islands, bays and even rock formations, and added a depth of history to everything he shared. His passion to share this area of Vancouver Island is contagious! We saw a pod of dolphins, sea lions, eagles, all sorts of waterfowl. At no moment did we feel rushed, it was a beautiful leisurely day on the water - that also kept at 3 year old happy and engaged all day - and ended with the a delicious feast of oysters. We all had a blast and can't wait to be back.
