Cusheon Lake Resort - Peaceful lake

I still can't believe I was able to book this place mid-season and with only days to spare. I mean,…read moreit's a freaking log house, on a lake and in the woods - out just doesn't get any better than that. One thing motorcycle enthusiasts should be aware of is that, starting at the resort entrance, there is no pavement. So bring a kickstand insert, or be prepared to crush a coke can to keep the peg from sinking into the dirt.

Very pleased overall with these log cabins on Saltspring Island. They've got a couple of lovely…read moresmall docks with Adirondack chairs at the end, so you can sit back and relax. The water is so still at times, it's just like a mirror! Inside the cabins, everything was clean, and while not what I would call luxurious, it was comfortable and well maintained. The WiFi worked very well, in fact, much better than any wilderness resort I've been in before. They've got an outdoor hot tub as well, but we didn't try it since it was February and the evening temp dipped down to about 1 C. However, we did go canoeing on the lake, and it was fantastic - the highlight of our stay on Saltspring. Off the main highway, you actually have to drive for several kms to get here. But it's still only about a 10 minute drive to Ganges. Just one small item to take note of: The floor felt quite cool, and it took the wall heaters quite a while to warm things up. So next time we will probably bring our own small portable heater.

Serenity By The Sea Retreat - The stream that flows to the ocean at Serenity By the Sea, Galiano Island, BC

When you wanna get away from it all to "zen" it up, Galiano Island is a perfect spot. And, if you…read morereally want to be away from everything once you're on the island, Serenity By The Sea plays a great host. From the Seaview Haven Chalet, with it's own kitchen and two floors of my own space, it was blissful peace from the moment I dropped my bags. Definitely rustic, with a grandma's house vibe (complete with stuffed animals) the chalet only has one piece of "technology," a CD player--ideal when you're there to escape! *And a potty note -- they are on a septic system, so if you can handle tossing your TP in the trash instead of the bowl, they greatly appreciate it!* The view from the bedroom was incredible! Waking up to look at the ocean, framed in trees always has a way of winning my heart! My only suggestions would be for them to update some of the furnishings, linens and bedding. Right next to the main house, a stream runs straight over the big rocks leading to the ocean. I had to admit, there was something serenely magical about sitting out on this edge. When the tide was out, I spent so long stretched out on a long rock with my book that I sunburned -- ouch! A bathtub (yes, a bathtub) that you can fill up is built right into the rocks. I didn't give it a try - not being a bath person myself, but it does have a great view! *A deer note: Make sure you're around at dinner time, that's when the deer come out and try to sneak nibbles through the fences they have protecting their gardens.* There's also a couple of rooms they rent out inside the main house which had extraordinary views as well! Maybe if I'm feeling more social next time I want to escape I'll look into one of those...one did have a hammock after all! If this is up your alley, I should warn, the house is situated down a long steep gravel road, 12 km from the ferry terminal. That's about 1/2 way up the island, so I'd say a car, or really powerful bike legs...and it is a hilly ride!

Septic tank toilet paper mention by Crystal is accurate. Also Host asked us to minimize using the lights in the hallway, so you get to be environmentally conscientious. Stayed in the "Windsail" room. AMAZING view. It's like you're only in water cause you only see water. Individually temperature controlled room. beauitful house, seriously. Every room seems unique in an arty and aesthetically pleasing way. Luannah showed us the rec room she is in the middle of building and it looks great. super lovely property, kind of like a zen garden mixed with human size hobbit environment, like the streams, the rocks, the paths, the hills. Massage by Luannah, a german RMT, was educational and helpful. I read a lot of the reviews and she really does know her stuff. I have chronic pain and long standing issues from an MVA and she really did help. My roomie got a massage that was more related to stress and emotions. Theres only one RMT so we took turns. We both came out feeling genuinely happy. The Massage room is a separate house, also another amazing structure. Its clean, modern, well-set up. She asks you tell her about your body and when you go to disrobe, she goes behind these doors and then you tell her when youre ready. I actually love the face pillow that you put your head on when lying face down, it is, for once, comfortable!! Host: Luannah said she was going to send me referrals in Vancouver for a chiro and an RMT, which I thought was really kind and thoughtful of her. She knocks on the door and also responds to texts and calls. Her husband and kid came home later in the evening. She was super caring, thoughtful and helpful. Even packed us food to go cause we were in a rush for the ferry. Provided advil. Wifi is good. Shower nozzle was super tricky to get right. There's cat in the main area and I think I only sneezed and blew my nose a handful of times, which I'd say youre pretty safe imo. Cat is 19 year old Jeremiah who goes outside and stays downstairs, super cute!! Hot tub was my super favorite part.

My daughter, who lives in Olympia, Washington, encouraged us to visit the San Juan Islands (and take her with us, of course) this year. I looked at several possibilities and settled on the San Juan Waterhouse because of its location to the ocean, its view of Canada, the fact it had Internet (I thought I might need to work) and its online reviews. We were lucky that our son was also able to join us, so we felt we needed three bedrooms. The San Juan Waterhouse sits on the edge of the Haro Straight. Its water facing wall is nothing but windows, so nearly every location in the house (including the master bathroom) provides an easy view of the water. The house has three bedrooms. The master bedroom is situated so you can see Canada from the comfortable king size bed. The second bedroom is in a room with three walls of windows. This bed is a Queen. The third bedroom has two twin beds and has high windows overlooking the sod roof of the house. The main room of the house has comfortable furniture surrounding a beautiful stonework fireplace (gas) and padded window seats with many pillows for reading and gazing at the water. The kitchen. Oh my goodness, the kitchen! It has everything you could possibly need for cooking (including basic spices) and an amazing Viking stove. I'd never used one of these before and now covet one for my own house. Because my family was not going to be together for Thanksgiving, we had a Thanksgiving celebration two weeks early and cooking the meal was a breeze (and fun) in that kitchen. The kitchen also holds the house's main heat source -- a gas powered iron stove. It really heats up the place -- even the master bedroom which is down a long windowed hallway. The house has two bathrooms. One, as previously mentioned, has views of the water through the windowed French doors. (they have curtains, so don't worry about privacy). This bathroom has a claw-foot bathtub and a separate shower. The second, smaller, bathroom holds a second claw-foot bathtub (no shower). While the house itself is amazing, the best part is the location. The architect took great pains to fit it in with the surroundings and Frank Lloyd Wright slopped ceilings guide your eyes to the beautiful landscape out the windows. The house is situated on a small cove. My son and daughter ventured out during a late-night very low tide and found some interesting sea life in the tide pools. We had one beautiful sunny day and one day with strong winds and violent waves. We saw many gulls, three eagles and two small deer. I am already plotting our return to this beautiful house -- hopefully in the summer next time.
