Been trying to find a place to get my nails done while traveling. Off to a wedding in Oxford and…read morefound this gem of a place! Melanie was such warm person who made you feel comfortable and had a great eye for design and looks. I had a photo for inspiration but she was able to get a totally different idea and we went with that and it looked perfect! I would have never imagined to go with what she had done. I got extensions done because I am a nail biter and then had acrylics. Purple pastel coat and peacock foils imprinted at random areas for effect! Melanie said it goes with your emerald ring and will go with your green dress. I absolutely love it! Sad that isn't such a cute nail salon near me in Melbourne, Australia. The salon is gorgeous, all the beautiful details and equipment are all pristine! Go spoil yourself now!

Nailcraft pride themselves on their "No MMA, No Drills, No Damage" policy, as many salons make acrylic nails using MMA (methyl methacrylate) , which may be a potentially harmful compound. This was news to me, and it's a tidbit of info I'll pass along to my girls. The prices are comparable with other beauty salons in town, but Nailcraft offers a wider range of nail services, including "Nails for Males" as well as an express manicure, where you're in and out of the salon in 15 minutes or less. Nailcraft also offer vouchers, which comes in handy if you're like me and prefer to give your friends "experience" gifts instead of a Lush or Body Shop shower set.

Hollywood Nails, like so many of the other businesses on City Road, are happy to cater to the…read morestudent market, and do so by offering them a discount. This is pretty universal in this area, and if a student can't get at least a 10% discount, then you know that something weird happened the last time they blinked, and they somehow ended up being teleported to Pontcanna, without even realising it! Hollywood Nails offers students a really good deal on acrylic nails. At £20.00 for a full set of acrylic tips, they would struggle to find anything near as cheap elsewhere. I don't quite understand the new nail craze that's been going on for the last few years, (it must be twenty years since I last had false nails done, and although they used to ook good, they ultimately wrecked my own nails, so I stopped having them extended after only a few months... but I guess that they are better these days...?) Anyway, getting back to the point.... A couple of my friends have used Hollywood Nails, and have been pretty happy with the results. I see that I am not the first to review Hollywood Nails, and feel the need to offer my 'learned friend', who pipped me to the post, a little word of advice... You don't want to go messing with those Southern Californians there girlfriend! Don't you know that some of the most litigious people on the planet live in LA? That'll be the birthplace of the hallowed Hollywood.... hmmm... now what did I do with that 's'... mmm... it's gone... oh well... moving on...! So yeah! Lawyers! They're ten a penny in Hollywood... even driving down the freeway is a nerve-racking experience! You'd be surprised at how many people have personalised number plates with the word LAW in them, or variations on the same theme... you don't want to go tail-gating one of those fat cats by mistake!!!

The problems with Hollywood Nails start right from the moment you see the outside. You can see from…read morethe accompanying picture just how dingy it looks. I was a little bit worried that I might catch something from them. The inside didn't inspire me with much more confidence. I think that we are quite spoilt with nice looking beauty salons in Cardiff in general, but particularly in Cathays. But that wasn't the problem here. By anyone's standards it wasn't up to scratch. The service was pretty poor too - it swung between friendly and interested, and sullen and bored. That didn't really make much sense to me. The prices were okay but, really, they'd better be given all that. I'll go somewhere next time, and not just in the name of Yelping.

Thai Beauty & Massage is a peaceful haven on Clifton Street. It's modern interior exudes comfort…read moreand peace. They offer a range of beauty treatments including manicures and pedicures, acrylic nails, waxing and facials, but it's the Thai massage that always brings me here. I was a complete convert to the joys of Thai massage when I ended up staying in Thailand for about two months about twenty years ago. Before arriving in Thailand I had spent a month in Rishikeshi, in North India, undergoing a rigorous course in Hatha Yoga, and so I was utterly thrilled to discover that Thai massage offered me the same kind of health benefits that can be achieved with Yoga, but without all of the discipline and hard work! I'm nothing if not pragmatic! In Bangkok I used to visit a temple for my treatments, which was an amazing experience. All the temples have gardens and the area where the massages took place was in a massive room with vaulted ceilings that were held aloft by a series of soaring pillars. This meant that there was no need for walls, and so the gardens were in full view with the scents of the flowers hanging heavy in the humid air. Visiting Thai Beauty & Massage is not quite the same kind of experience, but what it lacks in grandeur it makes up for in style. They provide a number of different Thai massage options. The full body massage is really inexpensive at £30.00, and an aroma massage is £35.00. Both last for one hour, as does the Thai steamed herbal massage (£40.00). There are two half hour treatments, both costing £20.00.

However, my friend was going and is a regular sunbed user. Thinking that I'd be alright if I just tried it once - maybe sunbeds are like smoking, or drugs? - I went along too. I'm glad that I did go because the service was good and so were the prices. The shop itself made me feel somehow calmer, wrapped almost in a cocoon of girly protection. The end result was that I actually felt a little unwell and my skin was extremely sensitive. However, my friend had no adverse reaction and I think that this is just because I had never used it before and my skin is a little wussy. There is no reason not to use this place at all.

Treatments are indulgent, a little exotic, consummately executed and expensive... and pretty comprehensive! I called in the other day to enquire about eyelash extensions as I have grown increasingly allergic to make-up and felt in the mood to have a bit of a splurge. I'm now sat with the full list of treatments available at Wonderland Nails and Beauty, (which is just as well, as the subscription to the website seems to have lapsed)... and, well... I'm struggling to navigate the paper version too. It's not that the eyelash extension section of the leaflet is difficult to find, and is thankfully pretty short and succinct. There's three options; 1/2 Natural Look (£60.00) which will lend me another 40 to 60 lashes per eye, or The Look (£70.00) which offers me another 100 to 150 lashes per eye, or the Regular Fill (30.00) with no details given... hmmm... that one seems to be the more financially attractive option, but I have no idea what it actually means. So that's all pretty self explanatory, (apart from the bit that's not), it's just that the sheer vastness of the range of beauty-care and the terminology used on the rest of the leaflet has sucked me in and spat me out feeling rather bewildered. There's about 30 different nail options with another six side order choices (decorations and fake jewels etc), and that's even before we break into the manicure and pedicure section, which takes up another page! There are over twenty different waxing options, and then there's the facial and body treatments... the latter come with the most elaborate explanations, but I'm stumped by the names, let alone the blurb! Body treatments range from £40.00 to £65.00 aqnd the facials, including anti-aging options range from £30.00 to £55.00. The costs involved in the other treatments all seem to comply with the going rate with little exception. Eyelash tints are £6.50 as opposed to £70.00 for The Look! HMMM... I'm going to have to think about that one!
