I'm really shocked reading the reviews here. Max was my landlord for almost 10 years. I moved in by just renting a room from someone. When that person decided to move out I asked Max for the lease. He gave me a good rate, made adjustments to the lease with me (I wanted it in the lease that I had cats and a dishwasher) and has definitely not been the worst landlord I ever had. If there was a problem outside of business hours it can sometimes be hard to get ahold of someone, but I consider that very normal, and everything was dealt with in a reasonable amount of time. Most of the time I was able to deal directly with the super anyway. I really appreciated paying my rent online. I once had a landlord that would take weeks to deposit my checks so I was happy to have that problem solved. read more

The building was well maintained, management was responsive to maintenance requests, my super was extremely efficient/handy, and Max was a kind and communicative landlord throughout. Would have stayed in the unit significantly longer, but decided to move in with my partner and chose to find a larger apartment. When moving out, I referred my friend into my unit and have sent other people Nager Management's way because of the positive experience. 10/10 would rent from them again. read more

Nager management i.e Sandy and Max are absolutely terrible landlords and honestly just bad people. I lived in one of their buildings for one year with a couple friends (No way were we staying for longer than that). I had 4 or 5 landlords during my time in NYC. I wouldn't say I loved any of them but I would be delighted to have any over the Nagers. The Nagers let their buildings fall apart, they lied to us multiple times about upkeep and new appliances. They were condescending when dealing with us on the phone or via email. We would usually have to email three or four times to get a half hearted response to any issue. No one cleans the building, they do not fix or replace things even in the common areas. We had some pretty serious issues with the apartment such as emergency clogged plumbing that overflowed in the middle of the night! We could not use the bathroom for two days. We also moved in with no heating in mid winter and no hot water! I mean there is a big city out there, do not rent from these guys. RUN. To be fair you should look up any potential land lords before signing a lease. We regret pretty seriously not looking into these guys before hand. All the reviews we saw later rang totally true. I made a Yelp account and had to leave this review just because it is my duty to warm the next prospective renter. You may also notice a few 5 star reviews on Yelp from 2021! I am not sure how this could possibly be the case but I have my suspicions these are fraudulent. read more

I lived in a building managed by Sanford's son Max. Max consistently lied to me, spoke in threatening and offensive ways, and refused to cooperate on normal functions of owning and managing a building and tenants. Max treats his tenants with such disregard and lack of empathy, I am forced to question if he is in fact is psychopathic. He also does not have basic organizational skills to manage buildings and situations that do not go his way. Some of the issues I had with my apartment and Nager Realty include: Max promised my keys would be in a lock box waiting for me to move in. I arrived on a holiday weekend to no keys and Max was out of town. My apartment was being renovated and I was promised that it would be done by my move in date. When I arrived, I had no bathroom sink, the apartment was covered in dust and soot, I had no smoke detector, no light fixtures, and the kitchen counter wasn't finished. I was not initially given a key to the front doors of the building because there were no locks. However one day, Max had locks put in with no notice and I was locked out. I had to hope a neighbor was home every time I wanted to go in or out for days. Max refused to help the building get our mail from where the postman dropped it behind the basement gate into a puddle and area where rats lived. He refused to work with the post office to get them a key to the front door so that they could access our mail boxes. The radiators in the building needed to be fixed. My apartment ranged between 90-100 degrees between the months of November-March. I had to spend most nights staying with other people because it was so uncomfortable. Max refused to fix it. He suggested I "open a window." The radiator in my apartment leaked when I was out of town and damaged the floors and hundreds of dollars of my belongings. Max did not send someone to fix the radiator for over a week, further damaging the apartment. The locks on front doors of our building stopped working and the doors were left open at all times for months. Max takes long weekends every weekend. If I were to email him on a Thursday, I would not hear back until Monday or Tuesday. Max specially gave me his personal cell number to use. I called once and he screamed at me for calling and told me I was a "rude little girl." Max was uncooperative while I was trying to set up gas in my apartment. He did not have access or want to find access to the basement (where the meter is) of the building for over a month. I lived with no stove or oven for that entire time. Max and Sanford are more than the usual despicable New York City landlord. I would never ever allow anyone I know to rent from them. read more

There has not been a review for Nager in a while so I will confirm that this is still a horribly managed company, run by someone so inept that they offer not a single redeeming quality to humanity. Max Nager and his associates are leaches, surviving only because of their adeptness at taking advantage of others. Like everyone else I can confirm that they make no repairs, not even the simplest smallest requests. Overcharging for rent. All of the usual SLUMLORD BS. Hopefully some people read this and will avoid using this company and they will be forced out of the market and out of the service industry. They should be ashamed. read more

In first apartment, water heater broke, and was fixed the same day. In second apartment, on my first day, my key wasn't working properly. SLUMLORD. His buildings are falling down and he refuses to fix anything. My kitchen ceiling collapsed (TWICE in six months) due to hot water leaking through the walls. When we asked him to repair the gaping hole that still had steaming hot water pouring 24/7 into our apartment, he had to gall to accuse us of overreacting. And he still waited nearly a week. Meanwhile, we bailed scalding water round the clock trying to save that apartment from becoming an unlivable garbage dump. Also he tried to raise our rent based on the rate he was legally allowed to raise a two bedroom. The problem was our apartment was a one bedroom. This went on for months. He insisted that because we had a living room we were living in a two bedroom apartment. He insults and belittles you and eventually threatens legal action. He also drags his young son into his scummy rathole business, sending him out to shame tenants that dare to complain into silence. Living in New York City for 15 years I have had a variety of landlords and Max is definitely one of the better ones.
