Na Balam is a disappointment. The overall sense that you get after interacting with the front desk staff, walking the grounds, having drinks at the restaurant and seeing your room is that the owner/manager doesn't care about the property or its guests and that attitude has trickled down to the staff. There is no sense of welcome.
Details: The front desk person was getting lunch at 2:30 when we arrived, which is not a big deal because we were early. When he did show up, however, he acted like he'd rather be anywhere but there. He offered us "beach towels or cards" and told us we could hang by the beach. When we asked if he could put our bags in the room when it was ready, he said we could come get them from the desk. Ha.
The room seemed to be going for a minimalist thing, but came across as unfinished. No art. No mirror over the sink (there had clearly been one there). Mold growing in the caulk around the sink. A rusty mini fridge. No hot water (lukewarm). Did I mention it smelled like a Biffy walking up to our room and on the private terrace with our own dipping pool? It did. The tiny window across from the bed had no curtain and the light from the outside hall shown down on us as we attempted slumber. The AC worked.
Our room, booked under the assumption based on the website of a meditative retreat, was anything but due to the band in the bar right next door that played from 3-8pm so loudly that my man and I could not talk to each other without shouting as we sat in our relaxing dipping pool. The front desk would not change our room. "We don't own that bar. We don't change rooms because of noise"
At checkout, the young woman at the front did not ask us about our stay, but she did ask for the beach towels. I told her they were in our room and she made a sour face and then decided it was probably manageable for housekeeping or even her own person to walk the short distance to collect them. If you want them returned to the front desk, because, of course, who doesn't bring their towels with them at check out?!, then say something to guests at check in or even create a little sign for the room.
The beach was clean and the water was warm. The view of the Caribbean is blocked by scads of boats anchored just beyond the roped swimming area. If you want to lay out in a lounger in the morning for some sun and relaxing before the boats arrive, you'll have to lay in the sand because the staff didn't have the mats out even at 945 when we decided to get the heck out of Dodge. read more
