The shop is well lit and a good layout. It is also very clean. They use padded massage tables for you to lie/sit on, while the artist is on a roll around stool. Like I said earlier, Joel worked efficiently, keeping me comfortable as possible while getting the job completed. I would recommend Black Anvil to anyone considering a tattoo. While I've never gotten a tattoo, I was excited to watch my best friend get hers. Memphis offered a tour of the new space almost immediately and I couldn't help but notice the signatures of previous visitors on the wall, new merch hung up on a vintage clothing rack, and custom art hung around every room -- it was a gorgeous display of the range in artistry they both carry. After a few minutes of listening to my friend describe the tattoo she had in mind, he drafted a few designs and got started! We were there for about 3 hours and it passed by *so* quickly. Between the upbeat music, good conversation, and mini breaks to get readjusted, we barely noticed when the first hour had passed. Although I didn't get a tattoo that day, I do feel more confident after having a lot of my (admittedly, stupid) questions answered. However, Caitlyn (sorry if I've misspelled her name) was very patient with me, a nervous mom who was catering to a 5 year old. She explained the types of earrings, made suggestions, was forthcoming about the procedure and answered any questions I had. She also took her time lining up the holes to be just right--a true perfectionist that allowed me to make changes without hesitation. I am grateful that she and the other girl were able to pierce both ears at the same time--a heavy dose of hurt at once for a 5yo, but a quicker procedure that resulted in NO TEARS. I feel confident that the higher price that I paid was for the patience and professionalism that we received. This was exactly what I wanted for a first-time piercing for my daughter.
