It's honestly hard for me to believe that Indy Pride really only started as I was entering my young…read moreadult years. The first Pride event occurred in 1981, when I was in high school, at the no longer in existence Essex House with a dinner. It wasn't until 1988 that a "public" event was held, a festival that attracted 175 people at the Indianapolis Sports Center. By 1991, the event was moved to the Monument Circle area and attracted an attendance of around 3,000. From 1992-1994, it moved to University Park. In 1995, Indy Pride, Inc. was established as an organization. However, some not so great choices resulted in a substantial debt that was finally resolved by the end of the 90's. Throughout this time, the event continued with the support of The Word and Justice, Inc. I know. I know. A review isn't supposed to be a history lesson, but I think the history of Indy Pride is vital because this event has become such a vital, important part of the Indy landscape. Celebrating the LGBTQ community in Indy and beyond, Indy Pride has grown from a couple hundred attendees to being a multi-block, festive, family friendly event attracting thousands of attendees and a slew of vendors from businesses to non-profits to churches and many more. While some lament that the event has become more "family friendly," there's something incredibly awe-inspiring about an upbeat, festive, love-filled event which embraces such diversity and celebrates those who attend. There's a parade, food drinks, musical performances, celebrities, vendors, and so much more that you can easily attend and spend a good majority of the day. As an organization, Indy Pride "exists to unite and serve its members and the LGBTQ community of Central Indiana through leadership development, educational and support programs, and community events that achieve inclusivity, equality, strong community connections, and awareness of LGBTQ issues." It's "wholly volunteer-managed non-partisan, tax-exempt, not-for-profit corporation that organizes Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered Pride events in Central Indiana. Indy Pride, Inc. welcomes the participation of all, regardless of age, creed, gender, gender identification, HIV status, national origin, race, religion, sexual origin, and regardless of ability. Indy Pride, Inc. is governed by the Board of Directors elected by its membership." The event is largely wheelchair friendly and the LGBTQ community, while imperfect like the rest of society, works hard to be inclusive of those with disabilities and my experience has been everyone involved with the festival does an absolutely incredible job at being inclusive. While I've had times when I struggled when wheeling through grassy areas, the availability of assistance is obvious and the entire vibe of the event is one of unity, acceptance, and celebration. This is unquestionably one of my favorite events of the year and it's an important event for many people I love. As an organization, Indy Pride has become amazing at holding events throughout the year and at promoting the arts, wellness, healthy living, and much more in its special events and regular activities. Typically held in June at this point, this is definitely an event I recommend attending, participating in, or even volunteering in some capacity. You will feel loved, appreciated, and you'll feel like you've discovered a tribe.

This was my second year attending the Japan Spring Festival in Carmel. I think they have rebranded…read moreand changed the name from Cherry Blossom Festival. Last year it was overcast and rainy. That was not the case this year! Lots of sunshine and even more people than before. We arrived about 20 minutes early to make sure to get a good parking spot and secure a place at the front of the line for food. Our first stop was at the Hanami Sushi & Sake Bar booth decorated with lovely pink blossoms. I had the yakisoba with chicken veggies & egg. The flavor did not disappoint. We also had the spring rolls and Karaage fried chicken with spicy mayo. All good! There were very few places to sit (and not much shade) even though we arrived right when they opened. We did find seating near the front row to watch the Taiko drumming ceremony and brief introduction by mayor Sue Finkman. By the time we were ready to purchase a drink, the line for Mega Bangkok Tea and Lucky Maeve's Matcha were about a 20 and 30 min wait respectively. I ordered the YUZU THAI TEA which was fizzy and sweet. My husband had the THAI COFFEE which was super strong and also very sweet. While I was in line, my husband wandered around to check out what else we should take a look at next. He said the line for items at a Japanese grocery store (that serves food too) we frequent in Castleton called "One World Market" was also about a 30 minute wait. We opted out even though we adore their offerings and make special trips to go there to buy standard things you could find at the store on regular basis. At this point, it's around 1 PM and I'm overwhelmed by the crowds and ready to call it a day. Pro tips: Get here before the event begins and determine in advance what your priorities are for food, drinks activities etc. it's also a good idea to divide and conquer so one person can wait in line for drinks while the other waits for food. The takeaway for me is if you don't mind spending most of your day at the festival it can still be fun. Although it's still possible to support local Japanese businesses outside of the event all year long which is what I plan to do.

The Indy 500, or any of the festivities, is a bucket list item if you ever live around the city. I got to attend this year and had a blast! There are a good amount of facilities infield and out, but race days allow in coolers with food and drink in non-glass containers. There are also a lot of entry points, so make sure to choose which one is closest to your seats and your parking for easiest ingress and egress. With all the people at the Speedway on race days, they do a great job with security, safety, and spacing of everything. Just make sure to wear your best walking shoes!

It's the greatest spectacle in racing...and one of those things to be checked off that bucket list. Negatives - it does take a bit to get inside the IDS on race day...so have patience. The bathrooms weren't bad as far as wait time but some stalls ran out of toilet paper. Notes - I recommend sitting higher in the bleachers cause it's you're down low it's hard to see and the cars come whipping around. The last time we were there I was in row Z. I also recommend bringing something to sit on. You can bring soft sided coolers with drinks (alcohol beverages too). My son wore headphones the majority of the race and I wore my loop earplugs...helps not to be deaf the next day.

Weather was great Friday evening. Lucky us because if this was held earlier, it would've been uncomfortably sweltering. Event was offered two days, Friday from 5p to 10p and Saturday 3p to 8p. Alcohol serving ended 30 minutes to closing time. You could have bought tickets for one night or both. There's an upcharge if you wanted food or the VIP wines. A few weeks before the event, the FB page listed a $5 off coupon code and a $15 discount if you bought the ticket at Big Red liquor store. I wish I waited to buy my ticket to get the discounts but I wasn't sure if it was going to sell out. We walked in, was wristbanded, received our cute wine glasses, 20 tasting tickets, and a free beer sample ticket. There were food trucks on-site that you could pay out of pocket. We had a dinner reso later so i didn't get to try the food but it certainly smelled good. There was seating near the stage. Plenty of porter potties with hand washing station. Informal lines and walking around to sample wines. You could clean your glass at most tables with a water bottle and then dump into the bucket. Total of 1 oz pours and they're not allowed to put more than that at one time but you can resample with another ticket. At first i was disappointed with the pour size but by golly! 20 samples plus some freebies really was enough. If it weren't for our reso we could've easily spent 3-4 hours here. I started with whites but quickly switched to the reds because i prefer dry, oak, and whiskey. My favourites included Suite Michelle riesling and reds; Cooper Hawks almond, moscato, and cab; St. James peach; Constellation 7 moons and Cooper & Thief bourbon wine; and 520 bourbon and chocolate wine (tastes like a tootsie roll!). The IWF appeared well-run and it made for a good experience. The IWF was a two day event, with separate tickets for each night. Because of inclement weather, Friday night was cancelled and tickets were honored for Saturday. I wasn't sure what to expect since it's a new event, and they ended up having a big turnout on Saturday afternoon. The wine tasting went for a full five hours, and people arrived on a staggered basis. Lines for check-ins lasted no longer than a few minutes. Kudos for hosting the event for a long duration and allowing people to come back. As far as the wine tasting, there were 30+ booths to choose from. Most featured several reds and whites with a few dessert wines thrown in. I concentrated on the reds and they were fairly solid. Most of the selections were middle tier so don't expect a lot of high-priced vino. The lines weren't bad at all, at least toward the second part of the event. I just asked for a couple of samples (moving out of the way in between), then hit the next booth. There were some nice features of IWF I did not expect. There was a mini beer garden and admission included a pint of beer. That's a nice change of pace especially on a hot day. Free water was also included, and one of the sponsors offered free flavored water which really come in handy. There were a few food trucks on-site, and Maple Leaf Farms offered free samples of duck. There was also free popcorn and I certainly took advantage of it. Since the food options were fairly limited, I recommend eating somewhere else beforehand. Indianapolis Wine Festival was pretty good especially since it was new. The price point was on par with other events, though technically you don't get unlimited tasting (you get 20 sampling tickets but it didn't matter anymore toward the end). There were some nice perks, decent wines, and you didn't spend most of your time waiting in line.

REV is the event of the year. Ladies, Gentlemen, everyone, buckle your seatbelts because it is a…read morenight full of the best food in the city, great cocktails, some of the best live music, and everyone shows up dressed to the 9's all to raise money Indiana University Health Foundation. The food never fails to amaze me. You walk as much as you eat, and I always look forward to the slippers at the end of the night. The whole night is like 170 miles per minute but I have a few highlights. The Simplicity Bottle Cocktails: First of all, they're delicious, locally made, with fresh juice (so it's like healthy, right). The closable drink is highly welcomed especially as your hands fill with food. Next Tinker Coffee, Rev is a LONG night (in a good way) and I love a little shot of GOGO juice. I'd love for this to be closer to the entrance as a welcome drink. I try to start with the hall with Bluebeard, etc. - this is my favorite (team-savory) section. Last year was a lot of seafood (:( seafood allergy), but there were still enough good options. Last year, they had a whole section of local spirits!!! Poor planning on my part - I didn't find this till the end, it was in the third hall (north hall). Each Hall also has their own band / dj and it's own vibe so feel free to float around and find your fit. The dance party at the end of the night is EPIC! It is the perfect sendoff and last hurrah before the end of the night. The whole night in general just feels magical.
