Wow! I did my first headstand today, with some assistance, but I never before thought standing on my head was in my range of possibility. I always suspected that if I kick up, right away I'd snap my neck. Not so!
Andrew, the owner and primary teacher of Mysore Austin, is a wonderful, well-versed instructor committed to helping you exceed your own expectations and attain postures that seem beyond your abilities. I love this studio because it's friendly, inclusive, and truly for every level of student. Also, it is yoga just as it is taught in India, bare bones with no New Age trappings, not even music or incense.
Before attending here, I had taken many Ashtanga classes but never tried Mysore. If you're not familiar with it, everyone performs their own practice, like you would at home, but in a studio, with Andrew there to teach you the poses and then help you master them. You memorize the series, adding more postures after you have gotten the basics down; then you just show up within the daily time range and start practicing. (This is nice because it relieves the pressure of having to be there at an exact start time.) To reduce the possibility of hurting yourself, it is highly preferred you come at least three times a week, so you know where your body is at with the practice, which has helped me become a more dedicated student. There is a led class or two on Sunday, but it's mainly about going at your own pace and getting to know the practice for yourself.
