I'm also glad they kept access open even with all the construction happening around Elliott Bay. Despite the name, Pocket Beach isn't really a beach in the traditional sense. It's mostly pebbles and rocks instead of sand, but that's part of what makes it interesting. There are a bunch of big driftwood logs along the shore (not sure if they were placed there or just floated in over time), and they make great spots to sit and enjoy the view. It's actually a really nice place to catch the sunset. On clear evenings the light over Elliott Bay is beautiful and the logs are perfect for sitting and taking it all in. It's also very dog friendly. Lots of people bring their pups, and my fur babies love climbing over the logs, exploring the rocks, and splashing around near the water. Overall it's a great little stop along the Elliott Bay Trail if you want to sit for a bit, enjoy the scenery, or just get outside and relax.

Pioneer Square Habitat Beach takes up a fantastic little slice right next to the downtown ferry…read more It was pretty busy when we dropped in, with several people with dogs playing in the water, and even a cat on a leash. The honey and I nabbed a log and enjoyed the ferry coming in while we ate our general porpoise. The beach has sand, but it's fairly light with much of the space made up of rocks with quite a bit of driftwood. All in all a pretty sweet place to decompress before getting on the ferry.

I took a nice stroll though this park and enjoyed looking at the artistic creations and learning about the artists. The first thing that caught my eye was the zodiac sign animals. Then I noticed an area that was an abstract art putt putt course. People seem to come here to picnic and let the little ones run off some energy. There is plenty of open space and gravel paths to walk on as well. I had a nice time here and I would definitely come back.

It is a free oasis of calm, a view of the Sound, the Olympics on a clear day, and an opportunity to wander among world class contemporary sculptures. It is the free part of the Seattle Art Museum along with the original Volunteer Park building and the downtown Venturi-Cloepfil building which charge admission. Like most all museums, the work has been donated by Seattle families. It was a brownfield. The site is sloped and difficult to design to, with roads and rail going under it. It connects to the Eliot Bay Trail. The shoreline by the trail was extensively rebuilt in a natural way. The design is a success. The usual entry is from Western and Broad. Seattle has done well building apartments in the area, so parking can be fierce. The main entry has a large, clean, indoor pavilion with a minimal cafe, restrooms, some tables and chairs, artworks, and events. In rain it could be good for children, but may not have activities. To the Northwest is a narrow amphitheater. The backdrop to the amphitheater stage is a significant Serra. It is a great introduction to the artist, created in 2004, and the first piece installed in the park. The Eagle by Calder is the icon of the park often seen in photos. Seattle has a romance with Calder usually associated with his indoor hanging mobiles. Louise Bourgeois has a fountain and stone benches. A Roxy Paine stainless steel tree holds its own against the sea and mountain backdrop. A favorite artist of mine, Louise Nevelson, has a steel sculpture. They have an artist mini golf. I was especially excited to see Ai Weiwei's Circle Of Animals / Zodiac Heads on loan from the artist. I've seen other variations. Each head is a Chinese zodiac animal. I think kids would love it, but no climbing. The story of the originals is fascinating as is Weiwei's autobiography, 1000 Years of Joys and Sorrows. With all the art, to me it is primarily a park. People just walk, sit and read, decompress, and children play. It's easy to visit, except for parking, is open 24 hours, has significant contemporary artists, you don't need to know anything about art to enjoy it, and it is free!

Plan accordingly. http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/ Outdoor adventures keeps the guided groups small (maximum 12 people). I appreciate the small groups since this was my first time kayaking. Three types of kayaks are available: single, double or triple occupancy. Discover is an accepted form of payment. A Discover Pass is required to park at Spencer Spit. If you do not have a pass, a $10 day pass can be purchased with cash or check. There were several rangers checking passes on our visit so be sure to have a pass visibly displayed to avoid being ticketed. WHAT TO BRING - Signed Release of Liability - Bathing suit or non-cotton under layers preferred - A synthetic shirt (capilene, polypro, Under Armor, etc) - Shorts or pants made of a synthetic material (may get wet/damp) - Lightweight fleece jacket or windbreaker/rain jacket to provide warmth - Water shoes or sandals that strap on (or shoes that can get wet) - Sun hat and/or sunglasses - Sunscreen and chapstick - Water bottle - Optional; Camera, Plastic bag for wet items and change of clothing - If you have a gift certificate or prepaid voucher (such as Groupon) please bring a printed copy with you! Dorito Dan was our guide for the day. Dan was friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The first hour is dedicated to introductions, procedures and safety. Be sure to use the restroom before departing. Once on the water, there is no turning back. Kayaking is great for teamwork and communication. Both are required to avoid frustration. I recommend wearing weight-lifting/bicycle gloves in order to prevent blisters. Each person in our group started getting blisters towards the end of the tour. During our 3 mile kayaking trip, we spotted starfish, seals and majestic bald eagles. Thank you Outdoor Adventures for providing a magnificent day of play while surrounded by gorgeous Mother Nature. We all plan to return in the near future for another go-around.

I was able to get up and hydroplane. I couldn't quite get to actually foil but I did way better than I expected and that was all due to Brett! He is very clear, patient and fun to work with. Once we were on the water, the real-time individualized feedback was superbly useful - it let me know what to keep doing, and what I should change to paddle more efficiently. I had a lot of fun learning with Rob/team and the other students, and I was even approached by a curious seal! One thing I wanted to highlight is Rob & team's emphasis on safety. I so appreciated how seriously they take SUP safety. I felt very safe in their care, and after this class I feel confident about venturing out onto the Sound, with a SUP buddy or two, to practice what I learned in class. Looking forward to taking another class with them in the near future!
