It was good enough for us to add nutrition to our stomachs with no complaints. The Motown '59 show was surprisingly delightful! We didn't know what to expect. Stephens is genuinely a nonstop entertainer, but he periodically stopped long enough for others to shine. Our party of 7 enjoyed the show, which included a lot of comedy and laughter!

It continued this way until 2011 when the rail line was shut down by federal authorities due to other bridges in the vicinity that were unsafe. Today, this drawbridge stands permanently raised and happy to see you as you pass across into Myrtle Beach (if your bridge raising lasts more than four hours...). Perhaps one day it will be fully restored and rail traffic will flow into Myrtle Beach again. Probably not. Until then, stop by and check it out. It is in Gresham, SC, close to where Francis Marion and his men secretly camped in between skirmishes with the British during the Revolutionary War. Marion is the father of modern guerrilla warfare and his legacy lives on with the U.S. Army Rangers. One of my favorite movies, although historically inaccurate, "Patriot" is partially based on Francis Marion. Actually, the main character Benjamin Martin, is based on several patriots of the American revolution but primarily Francis Marion up until slightly after the halfway point of the film. It's a good movie but keep in mind that it's somewhat historically inaccurate. The marker has a paved "pull off" next to the highway heading east.

The front of the marker reads, "During the American Revolution Gen. Francis Marion (ca. 1732 ~ 1795), the most successful of the Patriot partisan leaders, made his camp and headquarters about 1.8 mi. SSW on Snow's Island. The island, named for settlers James and William Snow, is bounded by the Pee Dee River, Lynche's River, and Clark's Creek." And the reverse, "Marion, called "the Swamp Fox," led a S.C. militia brigade that camped on the island in the winter of 1780 ~ 81. In March 1781, with Marion and his men absent, Loyalist under Col. A nice mid-March round at one of the area's premier golf courses!…read more Michelle and I had an 840a tee time on Monday 3/23. We got there early to hit the drive range and some putts. We were paired with some guys from Monroe, NC and had a great round. The weather was PERFECT, mid-70s, sunny, blue sky and a slight breeze. So many beautiful holes with elevated greens with a fair amount of water and many bunkers, you will certainly see gators! The check-in process with Jeb was smooth as was the pre-game with Starter Tony. We stopped in at the Waterloo restaurant after the round for lunch and enjoyed the view, service and the quesedillas!

The Socastee Swing Bridge, completed in 1936, is a rare Warren through-truss swing-span bridge…read moredesigned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It is a living artifact of coastal development and the Great Depression. Architecturally, the bridge is a swing-span Warren through-truss structure with rigid joints, measuring 217 feet long and 24 feet wide. Its truss design features alternating diagonal members that distribute loads efficiently, while the swing mechanism allows the entire span to pivot horizontally, enabling boats to pass through the Intracoastal Waterway. Originally, the bridge was turned manually by a gatekeeper who lived in the operator's house atop the bridge. It remains one of the few intact examples of early 20th-century swing bridges in South Carolina. Its presence helped transform Socastee from a post-Civil War turpentine and river-trade hub into a connected community with access to Myrtle Beach and Conway. I lucked out this morning and arrived as the bridge was opening to allow a boat to pass. Very cool to watch the bridge slowly turn back and lock with the road afterwards to allow passenger traffic to pass. Major geek moment for me to watch the mechanics, the timing, the quiet choreography of it all. I witnessed a living piece of infrastructure history. There is a small watersports business on the south side of the river. I probably trespassed just a little to watch from their boat launch (but not the dock!) Sorry! As…read moreis typical with North Carolina markers, there is limited information on the marker but much more online. This marker reads, "Boundary House. Commissioners met here to run boundary in 1764. Popular stop for colonial travelers. Ruins used to establish present state line in 1928. Located 2 3/4 miles southeast." Online, "The Boundary House in Brunswick County earned its name because it straddled the boundary line for the Carolinas. One part of the building was in North Carolina and the other part in South Carolina. The house, sometimes referred to in documents as the Club House, was reported to have been "two and one-half miles and forty-four poles from the sea." The Boundary House is mentioned in early records, including designation as the meeting place for the boundary surveyors in 1764 and as a stop on Hugh Finlay's postal inspection tour of 1774. It appears on a United States Coast and Geodetic Survey map of 1873. A monument to the Boundary House, placed at its ruins, was used in the 1928 survey of the Carolinas' dividing line. C. B. Berry, a South Carolina surveyor who researched the Boundary House believed that it was built around 1750, after the original boundary line was run, and situated such that the line ran down the middle of the structure's center hallway. "The best known incident at the Boundary House did not involve the running of a boundary line, but involved the accessibility to South Carolina territory that the meeting place offered. In 1805 Benjamin Smith, future Governor of North Carolina, had a disagreement with his cousin Judge Alfred Moore. Because of Alfred Moore's poor health, the matter was taken up by Moore's brother Captain Maurice Moore, who challenged Smith to a duel. Since dueling was outlawed in North Carolina, officials from Brunswick attempted to thwart the contest. The duellists, their seconds, and their chosen physicians fled across the state line to South Carolina, where duels were legal. The North Carolina officers met with the dueling parties at the Boundary House, with the officers on the North Carolina side of the hall and the duelists and their attendants on the South Carolina side. The duel took place on South Carolina soil nearby. Smith was injured but recovered in the matter of a couple of weeks." This is marker D-79 and it was cast in 1976.
