I contacted MYK Camera Repair regarding a Canon EOS SL2 with a clear and repeatable issue: the rear LCD is black in Live View and Movie mode, while the viewfinder, menus, and playback all work normally. Communication was inconsistent and unclear. I answered their questions, provided photos, and explained the issue in detail. Despite this, I was told that "nothing is wrong" based solely on photos, without any diagnostic explanation or guidance on how to fix the problem. When I asked directly whether this was an issue they could repair or what the likely cause might be, I stopped receiving responses altogether. No clear explanation, repair option, or referral was provided. I was looking for professional diagnosis or a clear yes/no on service. The calls became so frequent that I found them to be alarming and felt the need to report him to Yelp for harassment--clearly, he has an issue! 5 times is way too much!!! BTW, I still stand by my original review. However, for anyone looking for an alternative, I found a camera repair store downtown, called Int'l Camera, that fixed my camera with a NEW part from Sony, not a USED one on Ebay, but without the communication problems and limited store hours I experienced with John. I had such an excellent experience with MYK. I have a camera that is honestly too fancy for me - I just use it on basic settings and mostly don't know what I'm doing. After years of faithful service, my Canon 5d Mark II was in need of repair. Sadly, Canon no longer services this camera (in the grand scheme of things, it's not even that old). While there are companies that service this camera closer to where I live in California, the Yelp reviews of these establishments left much to be desired. I broke my GH5 camera LCD, due to an unfortunate accident and was really panicking about what to do about the situation. Contacting Panasonic they wouldn't repair my camera because it was "out of warranty" and BestBuy couldn't service my camera unless I had Geeksquad. The manufacturer advised replacing the entire lens assembly on a PXW-Z100 camcorder to solve a slight focus issue. MYK said they likely could repair this instead of replace. They even advised the likely cost of this before even sending it in (which most repair shops refuse to do). This gave me the confidence to use them for the first time, as it showed experience with the issue. The repair was indeed successful and replacement was not needed. Also, they shipped it back with BETTER packaging material than it was sent to them. Excellent communication throughout. I was really concerned about sending my camera to Illinois to get repaired but I didn't really have a choice. None of the local shops could repair my broken Canon Vixia HF M41 LCD screen. The worst part was some of the video I had recorded on the camcorder was on the built-in hard-drive and because of the broken screen I couldn't transfer the video. If the repair doesn't workout then the family video I have on the HD is lost forever! I checked some Yelp reviews and MYK repair seemed to be legit so I took my chances. My Canon 5D camera would not turn on - and it didn't look like a simple battery issue. I leave in the area, and based on the excellent reviews decided to bring it in for repair to MYK Camera. I loved that as soon as I came the owner did a couple of basic checks with different batteries to see if my problem could be solved on the spot. That didn't help, so I left the camera for a more throughout check. The next business day, after the camera body has been opened, inspected, and cleaned, I received an update: water damage beyond what MYK is able to handle. He even took photos to show me what he found inside. I was asked to pay nothing, and after a little negotiating we settled on $20, which I still feel was too low for his effort. I had an issue with my camera (Sony A6000). Sent it to John in January 2019 and he found a little piece of plastic inside had kept the scroll wheel from working properly. His customer service and repair skills are amazing! The camera works as good as new. I sent in my Sony A55 last year and he performed a miracle on that one as well. FYI: Amazon can learn a thing or two from John about packaging. I probably could have thrown the package off the Empire State building and the camera would have survived. read more

John is exceptional for his technical expertise, his honesty and fairness. I had an audio recording issue with my mini-dv camcorder. John spent considerable time testing and analyzing the apparent problem. He determined that the issue was not with my camcorder, but with the external microphone I was using. I finally found a great camera repair shop! John is incredibly fair, his prices are reasonable, and he is very honest. I brought 3 cameras into John and he was able to fix them within a couple days. On one, it needed a new lens, as I had dropped it and bent the lens. On the other, there was an issue with the battery, and the third one, the lens cover wouldn't close completely. John was able to fix everything right away and for one, he didn't even charge me, as it was such a simple fix. I dropped my Canon Rebel T3i at a Christmas party and the lens got jammed into the camera body--couldn't get it off the camera! Luckily, the owner John was able to carefully remove the stuck lens and check the camera body. He did all the work the same day I brought it in--and for half the price a Canon factory center would have charged. In addition, I didn't have to pay until he knew he could fix the camera/lens and his communication included photos of his work so I knew exactly what was going on.
