I wrote this review in 2015 in an account that I am deactivating. My Guru Tutoring is one of the best services I have experienced. Let's face it. We all go on faith when we are going to hire a tutoring service. We flock to Kaplan because they have fancy marketing and it is who we have heard of. But I wasn't convinced. Especially since you pay a hefty premium for individual tutoring, like $300 per hour. But the value isn't there. Kirt is a professional every step of the way. He is communicative and responsive. He is personable and generous. My first tutor was an expert in her craft but poor planning on my part caused a scheduling conflict. Kirt was understanding and arranged another tutor for me. My tutor was the absolute BEST person in every way. When I expressed embarrassment at my low original scores, he reassured me that my score was not reflective of who I was in any way. Those words were kind and helped me stay focused and not bogged down with self-esteem issues. It freed me to ask all questions and not be ashamed because I wanted to look smart. My tutor was patient too and could explain things to me as often as I needed without judgments. But here is the best part. After two weeks of working with my tutor, I RAISED MY MATH SCORE 13 POINTS! That's how clear and thorough his instruction was. AND the tutor was clear that we not waste time. I bought the 15-hour package. I used 9 hours. I was offered a refund but chose to keep them because they were available forever without expiration. My son used them for his college placement exam a year later with the same results - a significantly increased score. I have recommended this service to two other people and they tell me they are just as happy. Bottom line: I will use them again and I would recommend them to anyone who asks! Update: I didn't get into the program I wanted the GREs for in 2015. But I did use those scores recently to get into the Ed.D program I am in at an ivy league university. I contacted MYGuru to prep for the GRE exam, and can confidently say that the service I received was well worth the price. In the past, I took a GRE prep course at Lehman College. I was in a classroom that held about twenty other students, and I felt that this put me at a disadvantage because these test prep courses usually run more on drilling than understanding the material. A good friend of mine took a prep course with Kaplan and had a similar feeling about it. What I really like about MyGuru is that it's individualized tutoring, where your skill level and knowledge is addressed. Drill prep is great if you know the material, but many people I met who are taking this exam have not been to school for a few years and need to refresh. I had a very positive experiance with MyGuru and recommended to friends and family as well. Mark, the founder, was always prompt in responding to emails and very helpful. I am terrible at learning in classroom settings, and when I looked into private tutoring for GRE testing everything was 2000-3000 dollars. When I encountered MyGuru I felt like I hit the jackpot. 15 sessions for about 1200, maybe even less. You get to choose your tutor and I personally liked Sonam. I ended up only using 10 out of those sessions and received a refund for the 5 sessions that I did not use. Loved the service online from Mark. Super quick to respond to emails and very courteous. He even helped me out when I had a credit card issue. I highly recommend them!!! read more

When I decided to study for the GRE, I knew I'd do better with one-on-one tutoring rather than in a class environment. MyGuru offered this at a competitive rate, and was responsive with communication from start to finish. I did not want to hire a tutor and I definitely did not want to pay for a block of hours and worry I wouldn't be refunded. All my worries and apprehensions were proved wrong. Using MyGuru was an excellent experience for GRE math tutoring. My only mistake was that I asked for tutoring too late in my studying and only used them for 4 hours. With that being said, in 4 hours of tutoring, my score went up 8 points. I was pleased that even the customer service was excellent. I contacted Mark on Saturday afternoon and tutoring was set up almost immediately. I had a tutoring session the following Tuesday with Stefan. I was reluctant to do online tutoring; however, was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was using google video and an online whiteboard. There were plenty of visuals and an inexpensive online book we shared so it was easy to follow along. I had 1.5 hours of tutoring left that was also easy to get refunded for.
