***This place is HORRIBLE! NIGHTMARE! DO NOT RENT HERE! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! ***…read more The this place is poorly managed right to the top and it shows. The building manager (Joe) and owner (Henry) are LIARS and THREATENED me with a lawsuit because I had the nerve to ask for my security deposit back when I moved out! Can you believe that!? I paid on time every month! The room was in better shape AFTER I left than when I moved in! I should have known this was a bad place when they said they accept CASH ONLY as payment and DO NOT GIVE RECEIPT of the rent payments! I also asked for a written contract which the owner said he would send over, but never did. We only had an ORAL CONTRACT. The building manager lied saying I never paid for the last month when I did, then when I said I would call the owner to remedy this, the owner called me before I could and cussed me out over the phone saying I threatened his building manager (which I did not) and then threatened me with a lawsuit! Totally insane! I rented here for over 2 years, and stayed mostly because moving all the equipment out would have been a huge hassle. During the 2 years, someone with access to my room (building manager, owner, or someone they're associated with access to the room keys) came into my PRIVATE space and BROKE EQUIPMENT! Half the lugs on my toms were broken due to someone playing my drums incorrectly! The tom was untunable and I needed to order parts from the manufacturer to fix it. I mentioned this to the building manager AND owner and nothing was ever done. About a month later, even though my space was on the 1st floor of a 2 floor building, WATER started dripping from the ceiling onto electronic equipment! I notified the building manager, and said he was aware, the roof was leaking, but I was never notified! No reparations were made for the damage that occurred in this instance either! This place is run by the scum of the Earth and should be avoided at all costs! There are all kinds of vagrants hanging out around here as well, and the security here is terrible. I saw a drunk walk into the studio, and urinate out the front door! I notified Joe, but nothing was ever done. If you're looking for something in the area, take your business elsewhere, there is a much more reputable rehearsal studio just a few blocks from here that actually has SECURITY just search Google for it.

I wanted to think about it for a day and figure out what I could afford, so we asked the owner if he would be open during the holiday weekend. He said yes, so the next day we called just to make sure. Apparently he was closed but said he was still in the store and we could come on by. He's probably glad we called because a few other people made purchases while we were there! :-P And of course I was glad, too! I purchased my first uke, and I am so happy with my purchase. I have no idea how to play it, but I got a free intro book with the purchase, as well as 20% off accessories. I got a gig bag and a tuner. The owner was really helpful and hooked me up with a nice deal on the instrument itself. I definitely want to return for some lessons. I just got a really good vibe from this place, like you can tell they aren't trying to rip you off or make you buy unnecessary items. That makes me feel confident I would get the most for my money by taking lessons there, too. We always see the female owner of the store at certain events and such, like festivals. Steve told me about their ukulele group, which seems so cute. I definitely am looking forward to learning how to play my new beautiful instrument and maybe even making some new friends along the way. The store also has also items, like instruction booklets, accessories, guitars, headphones and other sound stuff, etc.

Recently I got the chance to check it out in person when we stopped in to browse two Saturdays ago during a day trip to Philly. It's located on the same block/in the same building as Union Transfer, the music venue. The music store has two floors. The main floor/street-level floor showcases electric guitars, basses, and some synthesizers. The second floor has acoustic instruments - guitars, basses, ukuleles, and I think I even saw a mandolin. The repair service area/shop is also upstairs. I remember the big beautiful windows that let in natural light in the space, and rugs and couches to sit on the second floor. The people working there were friendly and ask if you want to try out any of the instruments. You'll see bowls with "Russo" picks here and there too. It's a cool instrument shop. Really high quality instruments there, and nicer than the inventory at a GC. One apparent difference is that the instruments on display at Russo are adjusted and ready to play, in contrast to a big box music/gear store where instruments are mounted straight out of the manufacturer box. It's an easier/better experience for the customer figuring if they like what's in their hands at Russo. And even though it's a boutique store, it has a larger inventory than you would expect. An aces shop, highly recommended!
