It has been quite a while since I have written a review, but I could not pass up the opportunity to share what a wonderful experience I had at Harry Merrill & Son... After nine years, I *finally* decided to propose to my girlfriend, and as any guy would, I wanted both the ring and the experience to be as special as possible. I started out at two local jewelers recommended to me, but each left me feeling like I just went to the big box jeweler that begins with the letter 'K' in the malls across America. Each tried to sell me a premade ring and said they could "modify" it to "make it custom" if I wanted. No thank you! I then went to Harry Merrill on the recommendation of a family member and met Rob and Nicole. What I experienced there was something entirely different. Starting with the stone(s) and building the setting, Rob advised on what would make the best ring, took the time to answer my 101 questions, and listened to everything that I wanted. I must add that I am pretty OCD about purchases that are much smaller than this, so you can imagine what I put Rob through! He was patient and kind the entire way and gently guided me in a direction that I did not think I wanted to go in at first, but looking back I am incredibly glad I took his advice. Once everything was set into motion, Nicole stayed in contact every step of the way and was so accommodating when I had questions or had to pop in to make a change, which there were numerous instances of. What I proposed with is a one-of-a-kind piece that is timeless, elegant, and stunning. My fiancée absolutely loves the ring, as do I. Whether it is an engagement ring or an everyday piece, do not overlook Harry Merrill & Son; if you do, you will be missing out on both bespoke quality and a 10/10 experience... We cannot wait to go back in and design our wedding bands!! read more

I am located in Texas, and Rob, Nicole, and the team at Harry Merrill & Son worked efficiently and diligently to design a STUNNING & elegant bracelet to add to my collection. They offered extremely helpful feedback and really worked with me to expand my inspiration photos into something unique I would have never thought of myself. They responded quickly and the turn-around time from first contact to getting my piece in the mail was only a little over a week. I am so excited about this piece!! I have already received so many compliments! Thank you so much! read more

We've loved having Rob and co as our jeweler over the years. They've done everything from helping replace a delicate old chain from a family necklace, to designing my engagement and wedding rings, and wedding earrings. They're great at sourcing lab grown or ethically harvested diamonds, following specific requests (e.g., inconel for my husband's ring), and knowing exactly how to set jewelry to make things beautiful. We always enjoy going in and chatting with the crew. read more

I bought a Kirk Kara Carmella ring for myself after the sudden death of my husband. Had the names of my dogs and husband engraved inside along with a paisley engraving on the band. When you walk down jewelers row, it is difficult to have any idea which stores are reputable and can be trusted with your most precious family heirlooms. The necklace I wanted to get fixed was one of my most prized possessions, my grandmother's necklace--a simple gold chain with her initial, J. The chain was broken and I wanted nothing more than to have it fixed before her and my grandfather's funeral (in 3 days). I really didn't know how it'd go, but I noticed this was a family-owned 3rd generation business, so I decided to go inside and inquire. I'm glad I did. I was very satisfied with the level of service from Emma. She and her colleagues catered to my self-created exigency and genuinely cared that I would have the necklace fixed in time. Emma took her time and offered several options, like getting the necklace attached to another newer chain (she was going to have this done in time, by Monday) or to buy a new gold chain and get the original chain fixed later and maybe have it turned into something else. Emma suggested maybe a bracelet. I went with the latter option so I could wear it out and not worry about picking it up Monday. Now I have a new chain (which looks almost exactly like the old one) and I won't worry about it breaking as much. Oh, and they also offered to clean my rings without me even asking. They look shiny and beautiful again too. Overall, this was a 10/10, top notch, very classy business. I will be back and will recommend this place to family and friends without hesitation. read more

Dealing with jewelers can be intimidating. You seldom know what you are looking at, let alone a fair price for it, unless you are in the business. Harry Merrill & Son, a third generation enterprise on South 8th Street in Jewelers' Row, does its best to make the experience of shopping and buying from them as informative and relaxing as possible (Let's face it, when spending a lot of money some anxiety is bound to creep in). They are in no rush to sell you anything. They ask plenty of questions to understand what you want, and are willing to show you many alternatives on the way to honing in on the bauble you seek. And, if they don't have exactly what you want, they can probably find it quickly and still make a good deal. I have visited them a lot of late for a variety of reasons, and discovered that Rob Schwartz (Don't blame him for his predecessors choosing an Anglicized name for the family shop) is open and genuine; that his mother is still hard at work and has an amazing knowledge of the Philadelphia gem scene over many generations, and that the rest of his staff is well trained in people skills. They make the jewelry purchase experience as transparent and no-pressure as possible. Always comparison shop, but when you are ready to buy, be sure to visit Merrill. You may find yourself wishing that you went there first. read more

Everyone looking for fine jewelry (especially wedding rings!) should go to Harry Merrill & Son. They were wonderful to work with. My fiance and I got our wedding rings made here, and they turned out beautifully. The staff was very friendly and helpful, not pushy at all (unlike some of the jewelers we visited on Jeweler's Row). They took the time to get to know us and made everything feel very personal. I'm so glad we found them! Rob and Nicole helped me design a ring that fit my budget and my dreams. They really went above and beyond. And the ring is perfect: unique and delicate, covered in so many little diamonds, and engraved with the most beautiful engravings. I couldn't be happier. I can't wait to wear it every day--the wedding can't come fast enough! Thanks, Harry Merrill & Sons!! read more

This review is LONG overdue... BUT sometimes it is hard to put pure magic into words, and the engagement ring/wedding band that the team at Harry Merrill made for me is just that. Not to say that I am a super picky person, but my fiance and I had a really specific vision on what we were looking for in my rings. I wanted something very unique, but would stay classic. As I compiled a list of what I did and did not want in my ring, the team patiently helped me bring it to life. They sketched out a rough drawing of my idea right before my eyes and within a week had a CAD drawing put together so I had a realistic idea of what the end result would look like. When my fiance proposed on Maui in April, I was AMAZED at what they created. It was better than I ever imagined and and I am so excited that I get to flaunt this ring for the rest of my life! THANK YOU! read more

Never thought shopping for an engagement ring could be this easy. My fiance and I stopped into Harry Merrill after having experienced terrible customer service at another jeweler. Luckily, Nicole was there to save the day! She had a rendering prepared for us to review based on an idea that my fiance had sent over to her prior to our visit. Nicole was able to identify the appropriate setting and guide us through the diamond selection process. Robert assisted us with the completion of the design, taking the time to lay out the center diamond with the surrounding 8 stones so we could more easily visualize the finished product. 45 minutes later the design was finished! A deposit was placed at this time and our search for the perfect ring was over. Nicole was timely with follow up, sending designs for approval as promised. I received the ring 3 months later and was speechless. The designs did not do the finished product justice. The ring is beautiful, timeless, unique, and SPARKLY! I have received so many compliments thus far. I cannot stress enough how easy this was. Simply stated, we felt like family throughout the entire process and it was a pleasure working with Nicole and Robert. We used Harry Merryll & Son based on the reviews we read and we definitely recommend them. My husband and l had a wonderful experience. We felt welcome by the whole team and we couldn't have made a better choice to choose our wedding bands. After a short brief of our life project and a couple of questions to understand what we wanted, they came back with a short set of bands and it took us less than 2 hours to make our final decision. I cannot say enough about this team -- and I didn't actually buy from them (I ended up getting a diamond through a family friend and a different wedding band that my fiancee preferred). I wen to Harry Merrill & Son because of the stellar reviews -- they are well-deserved. I went in a few times when I was first looking for an engagement ring -- Rob and the rest of the team walked me through the process and did not pressure me; it was all very comfortable and I felt like they wanted what was best for me. When my finacee and I returned to look for wedding bands, again, they took plenty of time with us and answered all our questions - which can be a lot as we can be a little indecisive. Yes, we ended up going elsewhere this time, but Harry Merrill & Son is the first place I will go to the next time I need a ring and even uptake for those we have. Cannot say enough about these guys! read more

I have now purchased two different rings via internet from Nicole. She is outstanding; she goes above and beyond for her customers. She sent me multiple pictures of different engagement ring possibilities for the most recent purchase, and made sure that I absolutely understood what was important when buying a diamond. When I wanted to look for rings closer to home, just to make sure I was getting what I really wanted, she was totally understanding and even answered questions about other rings. I never felt pressured and she was so patient. When I purchased the first ring from Nicole, a few months ago, there were some shipping issues. She bent over backwards to make sure that my ring was delivered to me promptly and correctly, including calling UPS to find out what happened and why my ring wasn't delivered when it should have been. We are thinking of planning a trip to Philly solely because we want to get our wedding bands from Harry Merrill and Nicole! read more

This is my third time purchasing jewelry from rob. This time was a fairly big deal because it was for an engagement ring...amd if you're a guy, you know what a nerve racking ordeal this can be! Rob was fantastic. Friendly and personal, he spent almost 2 hours helping us through the decision making process. When he didn't have the perfect diamond I was looking for, he made a call and had a selection of exactly what I was looking for in 10 minutes. Jewelers Row can be an intimadating place but here you can relax and trust you're getting a great deal and building a relationship wuth a jeweler you'll come back to time after time! read more

My Wife and I trekked into Philly from South Jersey with ALL the watches, jewelry, loose diamonds, gold, silver, etc... that we had amassed over several years that was just sitting un used and un worn in our home. We were not sure what to do or who to turn to. We needed a team we could trust to deal with us like the straight shooters that we are and would not rip us off and be fair. Robert and his team did NOT DISAPPOINT. Robert and his team were so very patient and kind and delivered good and not so good news regarding our collection of items with tact and as a friend would do. We were searching to purchase items that we would actually use from revenue received from the un used items we brought in for appraisal. Robert and his team were on the ready to listen and provide us with solutions to our needs and showed us some existing items and items they could custom create for us to meet our needs. Robert previously provided us with a wedding set and a mens wedding band (that he later recreated exactly after I injured my ring finger and the existing ring no longer fit) that exceeded our needs and desires perfectly, so it was no surprise that he and his team were able to create an experience and items that we would love and be a perfect fit for our style. Going into Philly to search for jewelry that is personal and meaningful can make your head spin. If you want to walk up and down jewelers row and go to location after location to try and find the best fit for your needs and above all trustworthy individuals to guide you along the process, then continue to waste your precious time and energy. You are simply wasting your time if you go ANYWHERE other than Harry Merrill & Son FIRST. Robert and his team will direct you to the best experience, people, and quality to meet your needs, even if it means directing you to someone else or a different vendor. Don't waste your time and energy by going anywhere else. read more

My fiancé and I were very impressed with both the service and quality at Harry Merrill. They accommodated our somewhat unusual request without any hesitation (a pair of Mobius strip wedding bands in palladium, where mine was set with a row of tiny diamonds in the twist). They turned out gorgeously and both Nicole and Rob were great to work with. The price was very reasonable and they patiently and cheerfully answered all of our questions. We live in Connecticut but that was no problem at all, as Nicole sent us pictures of both the CAD drawings and the final product, and they even had wax models ready for us when we were able to take a trip down to Philadelphia. Would definitely recommend. read more

In search of an engagement ring and wedding bands, my Fiancee and I decided to stroll Jewelers Row, our first stop was Harry Merrill & Son (we did not know it would be the only stop we needed). As soon as we walked in the door we were greeted by Nicole, who helped welcome us and guided us to the right section for what we were looking for. Instantly we found out that it would be a real team/family experience, which was GREAT. Robert and his mother introduced themselves and between the 3 of them, we felt welcomed instantly and before you knew it, we were trading family stories like we knew each other for years. Now let's get to the jewelry, you could have been there all day looking, so much of a selection and a perfect stone. Robert and team really took the time to understand what we wanted and not just sell what was best for them. They truly took our best interest in what we wanted and made it happen. The fact they were more interested in the happiness of my Fiancee and what she would wear on her finger for the next 65 years was a great feeling to know they were more like match makers than just selling jewelry. Since Harry Merrill & Son was our first stop, we did decide to stop at least one other place on Jewelers Row. I will not name the shop name but let's just say it was night and day with our experience. We did not feel welcomed, we waited at least 10 minutes before anyone even said hello and we were the only potential customers in there at the moment. When we saw a diamond, it was nothing close to what we asked for and they pushed the size of the diamond over the quality. We all know quality wins, well apparently not everyone. My parents bought their engagement ring from Harry Merrill & Son, so did my brother and now we can say we kept that tradition going. An absolute pleasure to walk into Harry Merrill & Son to talk with its family and you really leave with a sense that you were taken care of, because of course, they know you will be back if they do and I certainly will. Thanks to everyone for the great experience and smile you put on my Fiancee's face finding her a diamond that reflects her, flawless! read more

I just wanted to say how impressed I am with my engagement ring from Harry Merrill & Son Jewelers. They finished my custom ring within two weeks so that the timing of the proposal could be perfect! Everyone tells me it's the most beautiful ring they've ever seen. Robert from Harry Merrill helped me design and execute my dream engagement ring. My fiance and I walked in with a stone that we inherited from his family and only a vague idea of the shank we wanted for it. Two rounds of renderings later (preceded by 2 very patient consultations with Robert), and I came back to pick up my new ring, which continues to take my breath away to this day. This has quickly become my go-to jewelry shop in Philly. Every time I go in they are so warm, welcoming and do everything in their power to please the customer. I've had repairs done here, and the pieces have been returned in such beautiful shape! Even shined and polished without being asked. On top of it? Places have quoted me 3-5 times what they charge. Swift down the street quoted me at $70, this place did it (beautifully) for $42. Shank repair - Schwartz quoted me $250, here they quoted me $75. On top of everything they have a beautiful selection of vintage jewelry AND new jewelry. Everything is on trend (cannot say that for manny stores around jewelers row) while keeping prices reasonable. There is an absolute great selection in comparison to other stores! read more

My fiancé and I had an amazing experience with Harry Merill. We went in a couple months ago with a custom design idea, and they knocked it out of the park! They made computer generated images that give us a realistic view of what the ring would look like. The only jewelry store we went too and it was such a right decision! Very professional, warm and helpful staff.

After spending some time researching buying an engagement ring for my now fiancee I debated online vs. in person - once I decided I wanted the opportunity to see what I was purchasing in person, I started my search for jewelers. After reading multiple reviews and seeking some advice from friends who had purchased jewelry in the Philadelphia area, I kept coming back to Harry Merrill & Son. One of the things I most appreciated was their clear communication through their website, social media, and even stickers on the door that it would be a welcoming environment for me as a woman buying an engagement ring for another woman. Once I stepped inside, they did not disappoint. Eve, Nicole, and Rob were incredible to work with and helped me to design the perfect ring - even though it took me two tries to get it right. They were beyond patient in helping me make my initial choices for the ring and even more patient when I asked to come back to see the diamond I had already picked plus a few more a few days later. Never at any point did I feel any pressure to make a decision or go outside my budget - they genuinely seemed as though they wanted me to make the best choice for me and found some creative ways to help me get there when I could not decide which of the beautiful diamonds in front of me was most appealing. After I had made all of my decisions, the rest of the process was quicker than I had anticipated and the final product even more beautiful than I thought it would be. I am beyond happy that I chose Harry Merrill & Son and will be a customer here for a long time to come. read more

I had a great experience here. Very friendly and experienced jewelers. I didn't do my research and bought a ring my wife hated *(from a different jewelry store). They worked with me in using the diamonds I had from the previous band and ring and turned them into 2 beautiful new rings my wife loved! I can't recommend this place enough, especially if you're a clueless jewelry guy like myself and need help picking out the perfect ring. I should have came here from the beginning! Thanks again read more

I could not have possibly chosen better jewelers than Robert and Nicole at Harry Merrill & Son to do a custom engagement ring. The ring is gorgeous, my fiancé loves it, and Robert and Nicole made the entire process not only stress-free, but fun and enjoyable. A good Yelp review here won't do them justice, but I will try. Let me set the stage here. Philly is a significant city for me and Jodi (my fiancé) - we met here, we went to school here, and we plan to live here. For those reasons I knew I wanted to get her ring on historic Jewelers Row. I sold Robert Flyers tickets randomly through craigslist a few years ago and got a great vibe from him at the time (it helped that he is a Flyers fan). I made a mental bookmark and saved his business card. Flash-forward to April 2014, I looked up his shop on Yelp to read some great reviews and decided to start my engagement ring shopping there. Following my visit in April, it became the first and last place I looked. Other than my own limited internet research, I began the process of engagement ring shopping 1) knowing absolutely nothing about rings, 2) knowing absolutely nothing about diamonds, and worse yet, 3) having zero recommendations on a trusted family/friend jeweler. I feel like most guys are in this boat and it can be overwhelming and terrifying...which is why it is crucial to find a good jeweler. I certainly found one in Harry Merrill & Son. Robert and Nicole did a great job educating me on the basics of diamonds and ring design, providing me the knowledge to make informed decisions on my own after having zero baseline knowledge in this realm. They answered questions with ease. They gave me honest feedback along the way (the good and bad). They provided design renderings of my ring and PROMPTLY made adjustments to the design per my feedback. They never pushed me to make decisions. They never tried to "up-sell" me on more expensive diamonds and ring options. They were prompt to respond to minor and major questions via e-mail, even on weekends and days the shop was closed. They worked with my budget. They were flexible with payment/deposit options and timing. I ALWAYS felt that their #1 priority was my satisfaction and creating the perfect ring. They achieved both. Would recommend Harry Merrill & Son to anyone! Robert and Nicole - thank you! There's no one better! - Alex L. read more

Love this store. Love the owners. Love the merchandise. I spent a day many years ago wandering around 8th st looking for a place to buy a ring for my wife, who was at the time in Pennsylvania Hospital after delivering our first child. I saw a lot of rubies and settings and met a lot of jewelers, some that were ok and some that were less so. Then I had the delightful experience of walking into this store and meeting Iris, Stan and Robert. After an hour in the store, I wanted them to adopt me. They're smart, funny, and utterly lacking in pretense. Iris, who has great taste, was able to zero in on exactly what I was looking for. Robert went the extra mile to chase down a great stone. Made several other purchases since then. Every visit has been such a pleasure. I moved away from Philadelphia a few years ago.
