We purchased an expensive box set, the "Who-Who are you?" from this store for a Christmas Gift. The wrap was not opened until this past weekend. When we tried to play the CD's in our high-end Marantz SA-11S1 audio player, it would not recognize any of the disks. Usually, we can insert CD's that look like they've been drug down the street and scratched badly, and they still play, but it would not play any of these. Nor would the CD players in our cars would recognize them. We checked the internet. There is a known issue with this Box set. We attempted to return it, we didn't wish for cash back; store credit would have been fine. But we were refused. We have been customers with Music town for over 40 years, and never once have tried to return anything. Anytime we walked in we would often spend over $1000. We enjoyed shopping there. Unfortunately, this is NOT how you treat your VIP customers. Or ANY customer. Stand behind what you sell or GTFO of the business. James would have never refused to compensate with at least store credit. We are very disappointed with the new owners. We left the un-working box set there and left. We will not be back. I just visited this place for the first time. They have a big selection of used cds. I bought 3 today and there are many more there that I want. Well organized and they sell vinyl, too. The manager is helpful and knows his music. I recommend this store to old timers who love classic rock. It reminds me of record and tape stores that I visited in the 70s. I recall Evolution in Houston. I bought a lot of 8 tracks from them. read more

We stumbled across this place by accident. To our surprise it's a retro music store. I thought it was an instrument shop. The owner is super cool will play anything you'd like to hear first and knows where everything your looking for I at. Even though it appears cluttered and a little dusty I do t mind cause the store just has that old school feel and brings me back to the 80's waking in and buying cassette tapes. Furthermore I bought the boombox in the picture and it looks and sounds like it's from the 80's. And yes of course I bought a bunch of cassettes to go with it. read more

This music store is packed with CDs, Cassettes, and LPs. Mostly CDs (new and used) with a decent amount of used LPs and a surprising amount of cassettes. Fairly cluttered, cramped and dusty to rummage through but I was able to find some gems I could not live without. In general items seem priced a little high but luckily what I wanted was priced right (as if I have a price range; my immense collection is laughing at me right now) The lady working was very friendly and helpful. Several 12" singles I found were not priced yet so I waited several minutes for her to price them. No biggie. She remarked that due to my large purchase - she would be able to get more items on the floor now. (read= there is considerable product not out on the floor yet) Store could benefit from some more organization and cleaning, but still well worth a visit if you have the time while in the area! read more

Soooooooo this store was different. Lots of cassettes, some 8 tracks, CDs, and LPs. The gentleman behind the counter was polite, he was on the phone most of the time I was in the store. MUSICTOWN is the best musical store around! Fabulous selection, cool posters and T-shirts, and of course Mr. James May the founder and the owner of such a fantastic institution since 1979! James will find all your tunes you need to order and more if they don't have it in store, and make excellent selections to you and he's always been on target with what music is superb and of fine quality. Like one day back in the day around 2004 or 2005 I walked in thinking to myself what kind of new tunes am I going to listen to? So James said, "Want to hear something really cool?" And i'm curious, "So what is that?" m James directs me to a rocker named Frank Zappa and his album I never heard of before "Apostrophe." Paid for the CD, sliced her open the plastic, and then popped the disc in my car and cruised off on a new sound journey. After that I was hooked on Apostrophe and Frank Zappa, so it was mind-blowing and quite illuminating in terms of the magnitude of the sound and find from James's suggestion. Zappa may not be everybody's thing, but there's a wide variety of tunes at Musictown, so James most likely will be able to find music which is "Your thing." Nowadays you can fire up your computer and download just about any song you can think of and be listening to it in a matter of seconds. That's great, but what if you LIKE leaving the house? What if you like the sights, smells, sounds and feeling of flipping through CD's and records, looking for that right music for the right time? It seems to me it's back to your indy record shop (if you still have one.) We happen to be blessed with such a local shop: Music Town. They can't beat Amazon on price or sheer inventory, but they have soul. If you're a regular, you'll be greeted by name and given personalized recommendations based on your interests. Best of all, you'll be given the chance to sort through hundreds of albums, picking them up and asking, "What about this one?" You can go to the local artists section and find CD's that never have and possibly never will make national release. And you can have interaction with actual, breathing humans to talk about music, the arts and life. Don't get me wrong, music lover's are a lot better off with this new, emerging model than we were when brick and mortar shops were the only thing around. A gem of a store for record hunters! If you can get past a little bit of dust and disorganization you'll find some great vinyls/CD's/cassettes for reasonable prices. James and staff are super friendly and accommodating, so it makes shopping there a much more pleasant experience. read more

I have been going to Music Town since the early 90s. My brother shopped there earlier than that and showed me the light. I live in Austin now, but am glad to know that James is still there, and every time I come home, I browse everything used. I would say at least 30 percent of my 600 cassettes came from Music Town!
