Murry's (great food, great jazz) is a dimly-lit minefield that carves out the lion's share of a strip mall, surrounded by the piteous haunting forms of a laundromat and a Domino's Pizza. It is a local favorite, at least among the ambulatory geriatric community, which translates to at least a 30-minute wait for a table for two on any given evening. This wait starts early -- 5 PM, by some accounts -- and winds deep into the evening, expanding and contracting like a smoked-out lung, surpassing the playing time of the sad pianist who comes unbidden, plays one or two pieces (jazz or otherwise), and then leaves. Murry's (great food, great jazz) is a minefield, I say, because like all effective minefields, its hazards are unmarked. To the contrary: the bulk of reviews here heap praises on the food (great food, great jazz), which would be surprising were this not the country that made Applebee's such a rousing, insurmountable success. At its best, the food is fine; at worst, it is cheap salami heaped on leaves made soggy by a concentrated, centralized wad of dressing, topped with an excess of three-cheese mix; it is the stale reminder of a better burger; it is the jazz equivalent of "Kind of Blue" being covered by a high school orchestra. You can have a drink while you wait, but perhaps you shouldn't. The beer selection is not adventurous, and the wine selection is misadventurous. The cocktails are ominously unlisted. My fiance and I have indulged in a few different glasses over our several visits here, and each time our expressions contorted and our eyes bulged in unique, fascinating ways. The desserts are cheap. If you do not know how to cook, have never been particularly interested in good food, and reminisce fondly on only the anonymous jazz piano notes you've heard at similar dimly-lit restaurants, then Murry's (great food, great jazz) is perfect for you. Do not bother getting reservations, because they do not take reservations. Just show up, order an ordinary beer or a glass of extraordinary wine, wait far too long, and content yourself with an experience that serves contentment at best. Or... look *just across the street*, to a restaurant like Flyover that actually takes itself seriously. The Midwest's reputation as a haven of mediocrity is sorely undeserved, but Murry's (great food, great jazz) reputation gives one cause for concern. read more

Originally I wasn't sure about the concept, I've been to plenty of jazz bars done wrong and those were in cities with a much more prevalent jazz culture than Columbia. They're just artificial or pretentious or emphasize the wrong things. Hands down best jazz bar I've been to for 3 reasons. 1. The food was quick even though it was crowded and it was DELICIOUS even though everything is A la Carte. Got an enormous Philly for not much money. Girlfriend but her own amazing shrimp Alfredo. 2. It was dark! Jazz bars are supposed to feel smoky and dark and it was honestly like being on Mad Men, except there was no smoking. Fluorescent Walmart lights can really kill a vibe. 3. The service was very quick and attentive. My water wasn't ever empty and I never felt lost. This was a Friday night, in theory a very busy time and it was busy there, but I saw my server plenty and she had recommendations. The jazz you can't control for. The night we went it was very good, next time it could be very bad. But seeing the quality of the rest of the restaurant, I'd be surprised if anything was too bad. read more

Food is mid, one waitress there was very helpful, wish I got her name because she is a true professsional. The rest of the staff was very apathetic and unfriendly to me, and I was making my way to leave, but this awesome waitress helped when it was not her job.I use to go to this resturant a lot with friends and coworkers, but I guess they have changed in the last few years. I've loved every meal I've ever eaten here. Try the fried bell peppers with powdered sugar. Sounds odd I know but very tasty. Live music most nights and they've hosted some top name jazz artists over the years. Be aware that you'll have a wait most nights and they don't take reservations. The menu does not have any descriptions so when one orders they expect one thing but although technically it is the item it would be nice if they would describe it so you are not surprised when you get hot a hot pepper in your Philly steak Sandwich. It would have also been nice to have a warm bun for the sandwich tat was not stale on the end where it had been cut for, I assume, another sandwich. If you choose to order steak that is all you get. There is no vegetable or anything else that comes with. If you want a veggie or potato that costs extra. The food was passable but nothing to go back for. The service was horrible. At one point we had to ask another employee to tell our waiter he was needed. That was after we had waved at him several times. When time to pay our bills one member of our party of four had to hunt him down, literally. The atmosphere was nice and comfortable. The staff was friendly and the busing service was right on the mark. Still, I will probably not go back. read more

One of the first restaurants we checked out with our realtor when we moved to Columbia, and eleven years later, Murrys is still one of our favorites...for lunch or dinner! Today we went for lunch. Most people initially complain about the very dim lighting...but just get over it. Eleven years later...it's still dim, so if you sorta need glasses to read a menu...in Murrys, you WILL. There's no doubt. U less you are my husband...who ALWAYS knows what he wants, because he knows what he likes and it never disappoints. He gets the steak sandwich. Every. Time. It's NOT a typical chopped philly steak sandwich...nor does it remotely resemble a steak-um sandwich...at all. (See the photo I attached). It's a honkin hunka beef, cooked to order, on grilled,toasted baguette slices. He loves it, medium rare. Orders fresh cut fries...every time. Generous portion, enough for two. I usually get the tuna steak sandwich with pesto and feta...but sometimes I try something new. Like today. So I needed my readers...and chose the breaded pork tenderloin sandwich...and started us off with an order of their signature powdered sugar coated, batter dipped, green pepper rings....salty, sweet, crispy deliciousness. Just try them. The pork tenderloin sandwich was gargantuan...enough for 3 sandwiches...so I ate 1/3 of the butterflied cutlet and brought the rest home. It was juicy, crispy, hot and tasty. I will add that it came with thin red onion slices, a dill pickle spear and lettuce. I felt it needed a zesty sauce, as I've had it served to me at other restaurants. My favorite accompaniment sauce was a lemony horseradish sauce atop a smoke tenderloin sandwich I had at a bbq place. To just add a little zest, I sliced up my pickle spear and my husband gave me his...and that gave it a flavor kick reminiscent of a chik Fila sandwich. Works for me! A shout out to our most excellent waiter, Dan, who gave great advice and service on what to order...especially the ginger wheat beer! So good! Our time remaining in Columbia is limited, as we just sold our house...and plan to set up new digs in NC. Will need to visit Murrys as many times as possible until then! read more

Finally got to visit Murry's on a trip to Columbia. This restaurant is so popular that it is difficult to get a table. Our party of 4 secured a table and the food did not disappoint. We enjoyed the calamari and fried green pepper rings as our appetizers. Such a light breading on the calamari and a slight sprinkle of powdered sugar really gave the green peppers a wonderful kick. Entrees included the pork tenderloin sandwich with fries, pork chop with mashed potatoes, lemon pesto chicken and fettuccini with chicken and mushrooms. All so very good. Our group split 2 dinner salads( they are huge), with the house dressing. Lettuce was crisp and fresh! The restaurant was very busy but the food was still fantastic! So this review wont comment much on the establishment much itself as I got my order at the bar, in and out just like that. Did not stay long. I came in at 6ish on a Saturday night to sample the highly touted dessert menu that Murry's is well known for in Columbia. I have never eaten anything from Murry's before till this. I'm a sucker for good cake of all kinds so Murry's was the easy choice of course. The Gooey Butter Cake is said to be the best in Columbia on weekends so I took my chances and went with the crowd to see for myself. For less then 5 bucks you get vanilla ice cream (really good to!) and a square piece of the cake that's about the size of 2 decks of cards give or take. It looks like a large lemon bar at first glance but your taste buds quickly disclose a different story. Its got a creamy texture for the most part with a thicker, crunchy thin bottom crust. A classic rich butter taste with a 1-2 punch of vanilla and tartness to follow. You can even get a hint of the eggs and cream/milk that's likely part of the recipe. Following each bite with a spoonful of ice cream is a perfect match, Now I happen to be a carrot cake fanatic so nothing can compare to my opinions of that but this creation is certainly worth a try if you want to venture past traditional flavors of cake you find elsewhere. read more

If you are looking for a reputable establishment with excellent food while in Columbia, MO, look no further than Murry's! It was so good, I went here back to back nights on my recent work trip. I was in Columbia for two days for work and while my taxi driver was taking me to my hotel, I asked him for recommendations and he said that Murry's was close to my hotel. I took note and looked on Yelp later that night. So many times I get recommendations from drivers, locals, etc only to look on Yelp and find a 2-3 star overall rating. However, I was pleased by the ratings and pictures I saw about Murry's so I went on over for dinner that night. On approaching the restaurant, I wasn't totally impressed. It's kind of like in a strip mall, but not really a strip mall? I don't really know what to call it. Anyways, when you walk in, you will notice right away that it is dimly lit in there. Too dimly lit to be honest. It's like your eyes almost have to adjust because it's so much darker in there than outside. On my first night there (Tuesday) I arrived around 5:30p and was quickly seated at a table. However, the next night I went (Wednesday), I went at the same time and it was PACKED! They only had one (literally only one) seat left at the bar and I immediately chose to sit there. Great call on my part because within minutes, there was almost a wall of people behind the bar waiting for any of us to get up. It was insane at how busy it was on a Wednesday night. The first night I went, I got salmon and fries (all meals are served a la carte, which I am not crazy about, but whatevs). The salmon was DELICIOUS! I think all it had was oil, salt, pepper, and butter and it was fantastic. The fries were also spectacular. They were honestly so good, I was picking the crumbs out of the bowl at the end. The second night I went, I opted for a glass of J.Lohr Cab, a Filet, and a garden salad. The salad was okay, but I would have wanted more toppings. I think all it had was lettuce, carrots, cheese and dressing. I love me some tomatoes, croutons, cucumbers, etc. Bad call on my part not to get those delicious fries again! The filet was also great. Not as good as the salmon, but close! The food is for sure 5 stars here, but due to the lighting and the staff, they lose a star from me. Honestly the servers are essentially there to get your order, get your food, etc... I did not at all find them to be overly welcoming, pleasant, etc. I also get the impression they want you in and out (which I guess I have to understand since it's so damn busy there all the time! The more they tables turn, more money for them!). But I would hands down go here again. I would even go out of my way to go here if I'm ever in Columbia again. Make sure you get there at 5:30 or earlier though. This place is tough to get a spot if you're there 6p or after. We waited almost 90 minutes and it was worth it!!! The food was delicious and all of the staff was very nice. We started with the fried peppers covered with powdered sugar... surprisingly good! We also had the gooey butter cake and my God it was delicious! We were stuffed! Perfect date night. They do require masks inside and tables are 6 feet apart so you feel safe.
