Murray's Deli has been a great experience for years! Yesterday was no different. The BEST OF PHILLY designation speaks for itself. My cousin can eat lol...but we both needed a box for the second half of our Murray's Delight Sandwiches. They were packed with delicious hot pastrami and the perfect blend of melted Swiss, sauerkraut and Russian dressing. I also appreciate the fries being hot and that there were not too many on the plate. Let's face it, reheated fries just aren't it. But Murray's is it!!! Our server was wonderful and there's ample, cozy seating. You can comfortably dine in or take out. Who doesn't love options lol?! I highly recommend you check them out! Cheers! read more

My bestfriend raved about how good this place was years ago when she worked in the neighborhood so I decided to pull over and give it a try. I ordered a corn beef special as you can see from my picture the price was $19.79 for this little sandwich (half of the sandwich is shown in the photo) which nothing special at all! The customer service doesn't exist it was like I bothered them when I entered the store. I will not be back don't waste your time or money here. read more

I've been trying to find a good pastrami sandwich for quite some time. My experience tells me that if an off-menu sandwich (e.g. Reuben, corned beef) is on the menu, it's normally good. However, pastrami is a different beast, as it needs to be cooked perfectly and sliced thin enough so as not to become like tree bark. Murray's has a hit here ! The Murry's special Pastrami Reuben is as close to perfect as I've eaten in the Philly area. Pastrami was thinly sliced, tender and seasoned nicely for my taste, the sour kraut and rye bread did not disappoint. I finished the sandwich much to my surprise, as rarely am I able to do so at my age (74). Drawbacks, are street meter parking, not the best service but worth the visit. The Murray's Delight sandwich is so delicious. It's basically a corned beef special with coleslaw and a generous helping of Russian dressing, but with hot pastrami instead of corned beef... and it's grilled on both sides for a more flavorful experience! read more

On my quest to discover more about Jewish cuisine and culture, I've been on the lookout for a really good Jewish deli. Before a weekend trip up to Eagles Mere, my friend and I took advantage of going through the burbs and stopped by Murray's for an early dinner. The last seating is at 5:00, and we must have gotten there just in time. I had never had matzo ball soup before, so I was told I had to start with that. I was glad I did because I finally realized why it was such a staple of Jewish cuisine. I couldn't decide between brisket and pastrami, but luckily my friend was willing to split with me and we got both. I was expecting the brisket to be my favorite because, well, it's brisket. It was fantastic, but the pastrami was impeccable. I always give my friend a hard time for smacking his lips when he eats, but he called me out this time because it was legitimately lip smacking good! Naturally I had to end the meal with some desserts. My mouth was watering looking at all the options, and ended up getting more than we needed for sure because I just couldn't decide. I will say none of them really satisfied, which is unfortunate because I do love a good Jewish dessert, but I won't let those ruin the review. The final bill was a little higher than I was prepared for, but the servings were large and totally worth it. Definitely will be back at some point in the future! read more

Never again, which is very sad because I used to love Murray's. I don't know who died or handed over the keys to this establishment, but it is just awful now. After having spoken to the rudest, most aggressive cashier on the face of the earth, I picked up my lunch, only to find not one, but two foreign objects in my sandwich. The establishment was unapologetic and very condescending after confirming that I did in fact, have not one but two pieces of "wood" type debris in my sandwich. Will never order from this deli again, and would advise everyone to check their food before consuming. Very good Sandwiches! Took my parents here for lunch on a Monday. My mom has been craving beef tongue but unfortunately Murray's doesn't have it. No worries though, she got the NY Hot Pastrami Sandwich. It came on rye bread with Russian dressing, Swiss cheese and sauerkraut. I should've ordered the Rueben so we could've shared but I wanted my own NY Pastrami (on wheat). My dad actually ordered the same thing. As it turns out, none of us could finish more than half of our sandwiches. We all had them for lunch the next day. I've had bigger and better Pastrami sandwiches but they were in New York. read more

I hadn't been here for many years, but Hymie's was closed. On entering the server ignored us until we asked if we could seat ourselves. A very sullen, unresponsive man brought our water. The server repeatedly badmouthed Hymie's. My friend's kippered salmon came with skin on, which they refused to substitute. I will NEVER go there again! read more

This place has a deli side and a restaurant side. For this review I'm critiquing the restaurant. Over the last three years I've visited several times both for breakfast and lunch. There hasn't been a remodel here in decades. The atmosphere is 60's or 70's and it's a little beat up. Some people might call it homey but that's a stretch. One other note; it's generally clean. The wait staff is just fine. Usually friendly and competent. Often I feel like I'm being served by my mother and that's not a bad thing. Now for the food. This is a three star place. Feeling flush with success at finding good breakfast on Christmas day at nearby Hymies, the merry band of hungry people set off to experience breakfast at the 'other' Jewish deli in Bala - Murray's Delicatessen, just a1/2 block away, this time New Year's Day (it's a holiday theme). Murray's has a similar setup, half deli, half restaurant, though the dining area is noticeably smaller than that of Hymie's. The decor is also more retro-20's and 30's with some beautiful stained glass and tin. Smaller meant that 6 of us could not fit at a booth, so a 2 top table was added to the end of our booth. It also meant that other patrons had to walk in a zig zag pattern to get around us. Again, we were a mixed order - some with breakfast, some with lunch. One everything bagel with lox (seriously? So not challenging), one mushroom omlette with tomato side, one french toast. One hot dog, one "Texas Tommy" (hot dog stuffed with cheese then wrapped in bacon) and one turkey club. All were....well, just OK. Bland. The turkey club was 98% turkey, and so huge it had to be deconstructed to eat, but for all the meat, there really wasn't a lot of taste to it (and it was ordered with mayo). Next time they should think about less meat (so jaws do not need to be unhinged to eat) and more flavor. French toast was also just 'meh', not nearly the flavor you'd expect from challah bread. Texas Tommy was not loved -bacon was in that chewy not really cooked state that only some love. Fries were not battered but also lacked any kind of flavor. If I had to put one word to the meal it would be "bland". Service was reasonably efficient and friendly, and the place was clean. We may go back at some point but we were generally so not-impressed it wouldn't be an enthusiastic decision. Bought 1/2 lb of pastrami and when opened at home it was 1/2 lb of chopped FAT, and much burnt of what I don't know, returned and was told twice by the pit bull of a man that I could take my business elsewhere. I responded That I would do just that. Left without knowing if the cashier credited my card and after the nasty treatment I don't care. Went here bc Hymies was closed. Boy was that a mistake. The pastrami sandwich had 0 meat on it. It was ALL fat. See picture. The knishes were not cooked and bite size (for $5). Roastbeef was overcooked and gray. Pickles had been sitting out and mushy. Complained to Robin our waitress and she refused to take the fatty sandwich back or replace it. DO NOT GO HERE!!!! Foods ok but they have now instituted more than ridiculous requirements to place a phone order. Attempted to place an order today for a disabled client I care for and their absurd request that I give them a nearby business, but not any of the ones I knew of as I don't live in the immediate area. The businesses I knew which are next door to Murray's we're not allowed and then they hung up on me. I fully explained who I was ordering for and why I was unable to know other businesses in the area but that wasn't good enough for them I guess. My clients memory isn't good enough that they could tell me. The client who has frequented their establishment many times was sorely disappointed and it made my job harder. The food here is about the same as my last review. I have been here at least 6 times since then. I have lowered my review one star because the service here is so terrible. It is never particularly busy but the people who serve you, seat you, bus the tables - they are definitely not waitstaff - are not really interested in doing any of these things. The cashier/hostess is always reading a book while others play on their phones or socialize. That having been said ...if you want a quiet place to get some work done where you you be left alone and get some decent food, this place will work for you. read more

I went by the reviews and either people don't know what good tasting food and conscientious service is like or they think the food and service here are 4 star. I had a corned beef on rye. The most tasteless corned beef I have ever eaten. I had to ask for mustard and a pickle. I tried salt. It was dry and without any flavor. One tiny large seeded segment of pickle. My companion asked for a bowl of matzo ball soup. Tried salt. Tried pepper. Matzo balls were hard and doughy. $2.95 for a cup of coffee. No cream. No refills. Waitress never came by. Had to ask for a check. They charge extra for credit cards, sharing meals and I assume pickles and refills. No, I'm not going back. It was not inexpensive. read more

Disclaimers... I had been here years ago, just hadn't been back in recent years. Reason I hadn't been back here is that I discovered that I really like Hymie's. I am a Hymie's fan for sure. But, being up in this area recently, I actually thought to myself that I couldn't say for sure whether Hymie's was truly better unless I gave Murray's another shot. Plus, I really wanted to Yelp the place, and I couldn't do it properly without a recent visit. Yet another way that Yelp influences my dining choices. So for once, and in the interest of fairness, I bypassed Hymie's one time for Murray's. I went there at 6:15 pm on a Thursday, and it was empty. Well, maybe the usual dinner crowd was later arriving. A couple of people did come in after 6:30, but again no problem getting a seat or quick service. The matzoh ball soup was simply two matzoh balls in broth. No additional ingredients. It tasted nice, but not special. The turkey special was piled nice and high with some decently sliced turkey and the usual dressing and cole slaw. The scoop of potato salad it came with wasn't bad. But neither item had any special flavor. It was good, it was filling, but I didn't have any "Oh wow" feeling to what I ate. I hate to say this, but I can go to Hymie's and get fresher turkey on my sandwich. Maybe the biggest sin of them all... the pickle that came with it was subpar at best. To be fair, I'm not a pickle guy in general. But I do know the difference between a good pickle and a not so good one. This one was nothing much to write home about, soggy with little flavor or crunch. Jewish delis are known for good pickles. It's part of the experience. When the competition across the street is giving you much better pickle choices (on a serve yourself pickle bar to boot) perhaps you should be willing to upgrade your product in this area. This may be a small thing to many, but I consider that a noticeable slip that is a general indicator of a lack of concern about your quality. Even worse, it tells me that the management of Murray's just doesn't give a damn. You know what, when it really comes down to it, it is just not a fair comparison. Hymie's just does so much more for the dining experience in general that Murray's is just over matched. Hymie's is more spacious, the decor is more pleasing, they have the pickle bar, they have a more expansive menu that's more pleasing to the eye, the deli and bakery are far more stocked, and in general the food seems to taste fresher at Hymie's. I'm sorry to write part of my review here on how good Hymie's is compared to Murray's, but when you are located within a block of each other, you have to expect such comparisons, and you really must raise your game just to compete. It is clear to me that Murray's is unwilling to raise their game and that is a shame because they do some good things. I mean, every time I'm up here, it just seems that Hymie's is more crowded, and it seems that more people are reviewing Hymie's here than Murray's. That should tell you something. So I found this gem using Yelp mobile "near me" when searching for a place to eat near our hotel. I would've never tried or found this place otherwise.. Thanks Yelp Universe:) This place was Kosher to the extreme The Fonz would've loved this place. So we ordered a Murray's special and a Ruben. (see the photo I uploaded) Both sandwiches were incredible! The bread was grilled to perfections, there was a good amount of meat. Not overly insane like the New York style deli's but I think that the secret was the Russian dressing on the both of them. Anyhow they both were some of the best that I've had to date... I doubt I'll ever be in the neighborhood to enjoy this wonderful kosher concoctions again. read more

HOLY MOTHER MARY DE DIOS! I've found the holy grail and it's a sandwich! In the small town of Bala Cynwyd, PA there is a little deli. A little deli with HUGE taste!!! Cheese steak - Pretty good...cheese to meat ratio was on point and had a nice texture and flavor throughout. Great comfort food. Murrays delight: Hot Roumanian Pastrami - Russian dressing, melted swiss and sauerkraut - This bad boy was flavor filled, almost as good as the Ruben, but not quite. Ruben: Hot corned beef, Russian dressing, melted swiss and sauerkraut - Best sandwich EVER (for me). All the ingredients join together and do some crazy voo doo on every taste bud on your tongue. That's the only way I can do it justice...nuff said. I've been alive a long time and have found sustenance between two pieces of bread a large percent of my life. We ordered a "corned beef sandwich for two." We received a corned beef sandwich. When we called to see what the difference would be between a corned beef sandwich for 1 and a corned beef sandwich for 2, the person who answered the phone said (1) "it's two halves of a sandwich", and when that, shockingly, didn't fly with us, she said (2) "I don't know why they still have that option on the menu." The food is good. Not good for you, but that's probably why it tastes awesome. Murray's is your stereotypical Jewish deli/diner combo. Our waitress was lacking though. We had to ask for refills on our drinks as none were offered. Here is what lost me as a potential return customer: the parking lot is in the back, and you have to walk around the building to enter from the front. When it came time to pay, it was raining. I don't mean a little mist, we're talking a deluge that would have floated the Philadelphia Zoo away, had the zoo been in a giant wooden boat. The water we would have to walk through to get to the parking lot was running 2 inches deep, all the way. My husband asked if we could go out the back door to avoid having to walk all the way around the building. No. The back door is for employees only. We were completely soaked when we got to the car, with a 3 hour drive home ahead of us. General courtesy and service aside though, the food really is good. Based on the food alone, I give it 3 stars. Had they tried a little harder to actually go out of their way to make their customers happy, I probably would have given them four stars. But they didn't. read more

For some reason, Murray's cant seem to get out of Hymies shadow, like the forgotten step child.... Almost every review here either mentions Hymies or compares it to Hymies in some way, and here I am doing it too! But I guess with two Jewish deli's so close together, that is bound to happen. My family and I recently dined at Murray's after being told there was quite a long wait at Hymies (the only reason we have ever come here). I was shocked to find that once at Murrays there restaurant was at least halfway empty, yet people were waiting forever across the street... it made me think "why isn't Murrays at least getting Hymies over flow????" Anyway - I can't explain it. Maybe its that the parking is a bit harder, the smaller size scares people off, or its simply not as visible? I really don't know. The food is excellent, the coffee is delicious, and the service is just as "good" as at Hymies. The breakfast potatoes are sooo good! So is all of the deli meat, and the matzo ball soup! I will start frequenting Murrays more often, and not just as a back up. read more

Good food but extremely RUDE OWNER or Manager running the cashier on a Saturday morning. You can walk in the door , stand there and be ignored as she is either looking at her phone or just spaced out. No Hello, how are you, nothing. What urks me even more is that upon paying the check, she will run your credit/debit card through, hand you back the slip, you sign it with a tip, she takes it back without a "Thank You, have a nice day " etc . Absolutely jaw dropping for a steady customer that I am. It is amazing how miserable she is ( Main Line privilege I presume ), and I have a problem with my money going into a merchants pocket when not appreciated. Taken for granted. Shame on her, and shame on the owner if he is aware of it. Any wonder why Hymies is filled to capacity on a weekend ( or weekday ) and their competition here more than half empty? read more
