I just ate lunch here after not having been here for maybe five years: bowl of matzo ball soup and a corned beef special. The service was friendly and efficient. The restaurant is clean. The soup was excellent and full of chicken and fresh vegetables and good matzo balls. The corned beef special was nearly as good as Hymie's nearby. To me this is a great alternative to more legendary places nearby for Jewish deli offerings. And it's more affordable. read more

This place has nothing to do with the iconic Jewish deli in New York or any deli for that matter. They are making their sandwiches with pre-package supermarket lunchmeat. Save your money and just buy some lunchmeat and bread and make your own sandwiches instead of throwing your money away on this place. They give you a pickle on the side so I guess they think this makes them a deli. This is not a authentic Jewish deli. Katz's has been our go to place for breakfast at least once during each of our many trips to Philadelphia. This was our first trip since the pandemic. I'd read some of the other reviews with negative comments but I thought we could get past having to order at the cash register, We were pleased to see that breakfast with eggs, scrapple, home-fries and toast was still on the menu. We've have had it there many times and always enjoyed it. But, not this time! The home-fries had no seasoning, onions or peppers. It was a big disappointment and I was too tired to send the dish back!!! So, I ate the scrapple, eggs, some of the toast, and a little bit of the potatoes. I have some issues with this place but overall it's an okay experience. Their food runs on the expensive side and they have a menu that's on the smaller side, but most things I've had here are good. The corned beef Reuben stands out as a solid pick, and my husband says their pastrami is top notch. I wasn't impressed with their egg creams, but it's nice that they offer them. Ok, so I want to start by saying that when I first saw the line at the door then the prices... I almost fainted and left.... but as soon as I saw someone walk by with what I believe was the most beautiful pastrami sandwich I'd ever seen... I knew I had to stay. As you enter the door, you are "greeted" by a large man who gives you a ticket and sternly explains that under no circumstances are you to lose said ticket. (I dont know what the penalty would be... but I wasnt taking any chances, so I held onto that ticket with my dear life!) Then you get into one of the many "cutter" lines where you witness the mouth-watering display of a young man cutting your beautiful pastrami right before your eyes. And oh! What a sight to behold! And then!!!! After drooling all the way to the table...and you are finally able to sink your teeth into this work of art.... your tongue does a little dance and you experience multiple orgasms!! I mean... one does not simply EAT this delight.... You make sweet love to it! I'm pretty sure Marvin Gaye wrote songs about this sandwich!!!! I would have to say, quality wise, this was probably the best tasting breakfast we have had during our visit to Philadelphia. Everything tasted so fresh, even the eggs. Our server was super nice and attentive to our needs. I got the Corned beef hash platter, my gf got her usual omelet and my sister got herself a variety of different side items. My only turn off was the window we were sitting in front of. It was a large picture window , but the bottom 1/3 is blocked by hedge bushes. A view would of been nice during dining, but really no big deal. The exterior of the building looks like it's a hospital or medical center, you wouldn't know there is a deli there unless you read the signage again. This is easily the very worst deli experience I've had in 46 years - and I have been to more than a few delis. Seat yourself attitude from front of house. No menu. Sat for five minutes before a server said my server would come over. Server with zero effort. Zero. The grossest, toughest, foulest hot pastrami I've ever laid my eyes on - cold in the center suggesting it had been microwaved. Rolled up on bread rather than laid down in slices. Didn't tell me there was no table service and let me sit at a table for 10 minutes before I waved down the manager who told me I had to order from cashier. When I went up and complained, she did not apologize and told me there were signs explaining there was no service. When I asked where the signs were she pointed to a place where there was no sign, complained that I had an attitude, told manager she couldn't deal with me and then walked away. Came her for brunch with a few friends on a Saturday morning. We were seated almost right away, which was nice there wasn't a long wait. I will say I had trouble finding this place, and the gps didn't take me exactly to the location. The food is reasonably priced and they have a decent amount of breakfast options. Considering what we ordered I thought the food took some time to be made. I ordered French toast, which were good, along with turkey bacon. I had a great, quick lunch here while waiting for an appointment. I ordered a tuna sandwich and side of pickles, and my food was in front of me in what seemed like less than 5 minutes. I'm really surprised to see negative reviews about Katz's. It's not fancy and it's a high volume deli. The wait staff is maybe more efficient than friendly - no kidding. That's why I am at a deli in the first place - speed, good and filling food, predictability. Katz's delivers all of that. I don't think that they are particularly good for people who want to be fawned over or who want to be made to feel special because they are a customer. We started there because we lived about 10 minutes away. We have since moved and are now at least 30 minutes away but we still go back there - a lot! I can still get EXACTLY what I want in less time than places much closer to my house. Rubens are the best; pancakes good; eggs are done exactly as you order them. Great club sandwiches. WYSISYG here. Near my office in Bala, Katz's falls short of its primary local competitor (Hymies). It has more of a informal, corporate feel when you walk-in. Below are the two menu item's that I've ordered: Pastrami Burger - Huge! You'll probably have to cut in half with a knife. The savory pastrami combines very well on top the cheeseburger. The burger is accompanied by a side of steak french fries. Katz's Hero - This sandwich looked epic from the menu description (sliced corned beef, brisket, pastrami AND salami on a hoagie, plus slaw and russian), but left me a bit disappointed. I felt the slaw/dressing was disproportionate to the meat, and I would've prefered the meat cuts served warm. Also, I may have subtracted the salami, just to simplify the sandwich. The sandwich was still good, just not as memorable as I had hoped. read more

I used to love Katz's and would have it delivered to my office. Until today when I was informed that while they still deliver the driver cannot drive 1.8 miles to my office. While I understand I only tipped him a dollar when I ordered on Monday, I ran out of cash, but come on, any restaurant that stops delivering to you because the driver doesn't like their tip on a $10 order doesn't deserve my hard earned money. And usually I tipped at least 20%, this last time was an anomaly. Last time I checked restaurant's delivering of your food was based on how far you are from the restaurant. And I have never heard of a restaurant that delivers but cannot go 1.8 miles (5 minute drive) from the location. Unfortunately the matzo ball soup isn't good enough to take a good chunk out of my lunch period to get it. Also beware if the driver does decide you are good enough to deliver to, he might take over an hour to bring you a quart of soup that was not made fresh for scratch for me upon my order, and a toasted bagel. I was never able to figure out why it took him so long to bring something that required no prep time. So make sure you build an hour into your order time. read more

I was babysitting twins a few days ago and instead of loading them up in the car just to get breakfast, I decided to order from Katz's on GrubHub. I ordered potato pancakes and a side of bacon. The food was just...meh. Not bad, not great. My main problem was with the delivery person. My food arrived without delay and was a good temperature. However, I pre-paid online and the delivery driver (a middle-aged woman) made a face and grunted when she received her tip. I had the urge to tell her if she didn't want it, she could give it back! The tip was $2 on a $12.00 check. How much was she expecting?? Also, she was on the phone while walking up to my door and only put her caller on hold while handling the transaction with me. She even got back on the phone and says to the person "Girl, you would not believe this!!" I was too stunned. Unprofessional!! Fast forward to today, I decided to give Katz's another chance, but this time, I drove to the restaurant and placed a to-go order. The restaurant was quite crowded. The servers wore smiles and were busily moving about serving the eat-in customers. HOWEVER, (yes, all caps...) the woman at the the counter was definitely exceptional, and not in a good way. To make matters worse, I believe she is the owner's daughter. She proceeded to ask what I wanted to order, and as I'm telling her what I want she WALKS AWAY!! No kidding! Just walks away and starts writing order numbers on boxes. Now, I'm assuming she was trying to keep the other to-go orders together to minimize confusion, but I was talking. When I stopped talking, she looks up at me, makes this nasty face and says "Well, what do you want...I'm listening to you" She walks back over to the counter and starts putting my order into the system. Okay. I got thru the 1st half of my order and then she says, "Ok, anything else?" As soon as I begin giving the 2nd part of my order, she walks away again. I had the urge to just walk out because that is not the way you handle customers. I had to look around to see if anyone was noticing this interaction (or lack thereof). One woman was watching, and all she did was look at me knowingly and shook her head. The cashier obviously realized that I was getting annoyed, so she came back and gave me her attention until my order was finished. I paid with a debit card which I placed in her hand, but after she swiped it, she tossed it on the counter in front of me!!!! That girl had better be happy that I have a control of my anger and try not to sweat the small stuff because.....(I'll just let you finish that...) After this, it still took 25 more minutes for a bagel brekfast sandwich and an order of pancakes....REALLY??? I believe I've given Katz's Deli enough of my time, money and attention. I really wanted to like this place. It's close to home and always looks nice and clean, but the owner needs to get some new help. Seriously. read more
