Murphy's Tavern is honestly one of my favorite local hangout spots! The moment you walk in, you're greeted by super friendly staff who always seem happy to see you. They're quick with service, always checking in, and just genuinely nice people who make the whole place feel really welcoming. The vibe here is super chill -- great for grabbing a drink after work or spending a weekend night out with friends. They've got games outside AND inside which makes it even better when the weather's nice. It's so fun to just hang out, play a few rounds, and enjoy the atmosphere. The crowd is always friendly too, and there's this nice community feel to the place that you don't get everywhere. Between the good drinks, beer draft selection, great people, and the outdoor setup, Murphy's Tavern is the kind of spot you end up staying at longer than you planned. I've been hitting up Murphy's Tavern for Sunday quizzo for a few weeks in a row recently. What I've learned is the staff is ultra friendly, the beer selection is solid, prices won't shock you, and the food ain't half bad. Beyond quizzo, I believe they offer a happy hour and have other special/theme type nights. Let's talk about quizzo. They offer a 5 round trivia night on Sundays. Top team earns $30 Murphy bucks and the second place team bring homes a cool $20 Murphy bucks. The crowd seems to be steady with at least 3 teams and occasionally more. The trivia ranges from movies and music to general knowledge. Bring as many people as you want to answer questions, but no phones allowed during play. We roll with a steady crew of 3 to 5 including myself and our drinking bill rarely exceeds $30. I've enjoyed their fries and chicken wings and even stuck a slice of pizza. I have to keep my food expectations lower since it really is a bar first, however, its nothing to complain about. Come for the beers, bring friends, and maybe see you Sunday! read more

As yet another thirsty Thursday arrives and I think on and quickly decide what dinner will be, it comes to me that I should write a review of what has become my usual meal. Much like the fish sticks on Friday standard dinner of my youth, $5 pizza Thursday is now an automatic. There is nothing fancy about this pie, it is purely my need to maintain frugality whilst satisfying my tape worm like hunger that pulls me here so often. Not that it isn't an okay pie, in fact it's minimally flavored, frozen crusted, faux Italian cuisine-i-ness reminds me of the slices we would get from the snack stand after little league games to celebrate a win. So there you have it; Murphy's pizza tastes like victory. Murphy's was recently sold, and then sold again, and then sold back to one of the earlier owners, but somewhere along the way it was remodeled. Still a small corner pub, but much of the dive bar aura has been lifted. What is important is the new ownership understands what a staple this deal is to my diet and so has continued to feed me. They also do karaoke on Wednesday and have happy hour deals as well as sports specials all week long. The bar food is average across the board, but the kitchen stays open until 1:00 AM. That's all I have to say about that ** Added 10/18/10 There is finally an ATM. Things are looking better and better over here... 7/15/11 Upgrade! Murphy's remodeled again a couple weeks ago and now has two glass doors leading out to their front patio, where you can sit at one of four umbrella sporting tables ad enjoy heat lamps when needed. To call Murphy's a dive bar is an insult to a good dive bar, which is a shame because it has the potential to be a nice establishment. It has a good-to-very good draft and bottle beer selection...and that's the last good thing I will say. The food is inedible. The pizza is a poor excuse for something that isn't that hard to do right. The rest of the menu is equally dismal. Everything from the fryer (and that's a significant portion of the menu) tasted as if the oil needed changing. I recommend you eat before coming. Now the vibe...and to say the biggest negative is the staff is to understate things. The "owners" seem interested only in making this their private little pub - outsiders NOT WELCOME. If obeisance is not paid expect to be treated rudely. Most of the patrons seem to keep their distance from them. The rest of the bar staff take their lead from these "owners" - if they are not there they are friendly and helpful, but once they appear their behavior changes. I would recommend avoiding Murphy's at all costs...unfortunately there are few bars within walking distance, so I occasionally stop in, have a beer, catch a game, and hope for these "owners" to move on to other opportunities and for Murphy's to be the true neighborhood bar it has the potential to become. Oh, it does have bubble hockey. Make that TWO good things to say about it. read more

We went here late on a Sunday nite. Some other smaller local spots were no longer open but Murphy's was so we ventured in. Very casual bar. Seemed to have quite a few regulars. Everyone was really friendly. Had a round of drinks sent our way, chatted with some regulars and the bartender Lauren was awesome ! So friendly and welcoming! She was really attentive to us and all other customers. We will definitely be back ! read more

I may be somewhat biased towards Murphy's Tavern because it is two blocks from my home which makes the convience an overwhelming plus. That said, there's food here and there's booze, so what more can you ask for? While it's no gastropub, your drunken stomach will be very satisfied by the chilli cheese fries, pizza and wings. This is a more than passable Townie bar where you can shuffle in with an old t shirt and shorts on and feel completely at home. Fun Quizzo night and a surprisingly talented group of Karaoke goers keep things interesting. Give it a try. read more

One thing tho', this place can kind of ridiculously loud. I don't really get it. The place is tiny. Last time we were in there the pizza wasn't so great. I still love the crust but the toppings can be a little odd. read more

We Love Murphy's!! I'll tell ya, I went in there once about 5 or 6 years ago, and it was SCAREY. But over the past few years, it has made A COMPLETE TURN-AROUND!! They have done renovation, after renovation to improve the appearance, both inside and out. They now have outdoor seating and even an outdoor TV! Their food is really, really superb, from Pizza, to Burgers, to Caesar Salad. (We love that the person who makes it is usually the person that serves it- It's kind of a pride thing!) The staff is friendly, and mostly everyone of them has been working there for a while. We normally go on Karaoke nights, and it does get pretty crowded- but, if you can't put up with a mild crowd having a good time- don't go to a bar on a Friday night! But, you should definitely check out Murphy's! read more

To start off I am from the neighborhood and have been going to Murphy's for a long time.Since the new owners took over they removed the old booths, added new tables, added outside seating with a tv to watch the games on, and a kick ASS craft beer selection. The bartenders are always friendly and ready to accommodate you with whatever you need. It's a very relaxed atmosphere and there's always friendly people/bartenders to talk to and kid around with. There is no such thing as being bored with darts, bubble hockey, mega touch, and golden tee.....and of course the friendly banner with all of the fun bar guests. I ate here for the first time on 3/9/13. Food was very very good. People were friendly and the place was clean. We had pizza, steak sandwich and french fries. Highly recommended neighborhood tavern. The owner came out to make sure everyone's food was good and that they were getting what they needed. I have only ever had one complaint about the burger being well done and he came out himself and gave a whole new one for free. This is the classic place to hang out, even without alcohol involved! There's always a story whenever we go to Murph's. It's undoubtebly a neighborhood dive bar and we might have never gone there if we didn't live close enough to crawl home. The bartenders are usually friendly and some know you by name. Thursday nights are $5 pizzas which taste pretty good as far as cheap bar pizza goes. This is usually our last stop after a night out. Great place ! I'm new to Philly and just wanted a place to have a drink and feel comfortable but also meet some nice ppl. Sat there alone and already had the regulars in the bar talking to me and offering me a drink to welcome me. Great people! Plus Amanda (I think that's her name) was very entertaining and personable. I love this place! We randomly were looking for a place to do Karoke and we found this place online. We decided to check it out because we live locally. We went on a Friday and they have Karaoke. This place as awesome. Tons of beer specials, food is delicious. Had a group of 7 and it was such a fun place. We stayed the entire time, got to meet the owners who are really nice. Great place to go for some beverages and a bite to eat. We love their simple "carnival" like pizza. Its small and narrow with a dart board crammed in the back. They've remodeled it a little bit from what I can tell.. nothing too special but its cleaned up! It's not the type of bar you would want to have a large group of friends on a friday night, as there really isnt that much room... BUT the service is GREAT. Very friendly staff, especially the cook (who has personally brought our food out, and asked us if we needed refills). It's simple, but my boyfriend and I dig it. :) read more
