This shoe shop is like walking back in time. You show the salesman (owner?) what you like and he brings the box plus two other similar items in your size and puts them on your feet, checking fit! Murphy's service is like service used to be. They know their stuff. The salesman (I forgot his name) asked a couple of questions and came back with a couple of styles. One was very close to what I like, but not perfect. He went in the back of the shop and came back with a couple more to try on. The first one was the one. They don't have a large selection, which I wasn't looking for. All I wanted was a good fit and a shoe for my type of workout. I am on a roll later. I am handicapped. I have no nose so I am physically deformed also carrying a splint on my right hand due to a fall and a broken bone which is permanent. I arrived at Murphy's at the same time as another young lady who decided to open the door for me. Silly because I can open my own doors Im rather talented at that lately... She goes to look for shoes I go to look for shoes. I feel like two men's shoes to ask if they have size 15 e as I'm getting new splints for my legs because I'm handicapped and the new ones are bigger because my health is declining as are my feet getting wider and more sore every day. There's a store clerk to my left helping a lady with sneakers no big deal cool I'm happy for her. I continue to look at the small selection of shoes I noticed the prices are cheap... I shop at Alamo I'm used to spending money... This pair of shoes I am selecting are a gift from my best friend because she knows I have no money at the moment and she wants to help me out by buying me a pair of shoes for my new splints due a week. I select two pair to ask if they have them in 15E men's as that is my size now with the splints because I am handicapped. The shoes I bought were great fit and a competitive price...but the customer service was less than stellar. The clerk made a loud, insensitive remark about my "bunions" in the midst of a crowded store with 3-4 waiting customers. Came in since I forgot my sneakers in NYC and I needed new running sneakers for the gym. Gary the salesperson was great and knowledgeable ! He had me take my shoes off and watched my gate pattern and picked out 3 different sneakers to try on that matched the needs of my feet. I fell in love with the Mizuno sneakers he showed me. I felt like Cinderella trying on sneakers trying to find the right one and I was a happy camper with his help I was able to find the right sneaker for my runs. I would NOT recommend purchasing shoes from this store. Their selection is not as wide as other specialty shoe stores and their service incredibly poor. I am highly disappointed as I purchased a pair of shoes from them that were defective (see the photos of two months of wear for a shoe which cost over $100). Instead of them offering to help contact the maker of the shoe or offering me a refund, they instead pushed it back on me telling me to call the shoe company in addition to being incredibly rude when I voiced my frustration for their lack of help. One of the associates even got so mad that he walked away and said "he couldn't deal with me." Turns out that I was correct in that the shoe ended up being defective. I will NEVER be returning to this store. In addition, their return policy is ridiculous, only store credit. This locks you into their minimal options and poor service. I always want to support local business but not when the owners are completely inappropriate and unprofessional. read more

I had been wearing the same running shoes for so long that the size had rubbed off and I had replaced the laces twice. Although I was pretty sure I wanted to reorder the newer model of my old shoes, I wanted to get a professional to look at my feet and gait to recommend the best shoe for my body. The salesman had me walk around the store barefoot and noted that my feet overpronated. He then had me try on the most supportive models from three popular brands of running shoes. I wasn't in love with any of the colors, so he was glad to give me a couple more options that were a little more stylish, but gave slightly less support. But in the end, I chose support over style and bought a pair of blue/gray Saucony's (my old shoe!). He was patient with me while I slowly eliminated options and eventually committed to a pair. And he was knowledgeable about the slight differences between each shoe, down to the eighth inch difference in the insole heights. Be prepared to spend a lot on running shoes, but know that with the price comes high quality footwear and a personalized fit that you can't get from simply ordering online. They don't allow returns, only store credit or exchanges, and I totally understand why. I'm happy to spend a little more money to get great customer service and support a local Evanston business! read more

Love Murphys Fit!! Needed help again in finding an upgraded shoe. My feet are "special " (super flat) and short of going to a podiatrist every time I need running shoe advice, I can always count on Murphys Fit to steer me right. As a daily runner, I have relied on these guys for decades and am so thankful they're here. These guys know their shoes and are dedicated to their customers. If you are a runner, it is a good idea to check in here and make sure you are using the right brand and model. For the people who come here and get the professional advice and then shop online just to save a few bucks, that's really kind of crappy. Generally I go to Fleet Feet to get all my running shoes, recently I had a bad experience so I figured I would frequent my neighborhood business. I was pleasantly surprised, especially after reading the mixture of reviews. Everyone was super friendly and knowledgeable. I was fitted in New Balance narrow fit (which I would've never even looked at) and it was like a cinderella moment. I ran the next day with zero issues and continue to run and love my new shoes. They do have an exchange policy if you run and don't like your shoe, which is the same as Fleet Feet so I don't find that outrageous. They are allowing my Dad to return his shoes and give me the store credit. Overall great experience and will be back for all my future running needs! read more

I've been shopping at this place for years, but a recent mishap will cause me to never set foot in this place again. I brought my boyfriend to get a pair of running shoes and if he didn't want the most expensive shoes in the place, they weren't interested in helping him further. They deliberately brought him the wrong size in a cheaper pair of shoes and then told him smugly that "we told you that shoe wouldn't feel as good." Well, DUH. If it's the WRONG size then even an expensive shoe would feel awful. He ended up buying the expensive shoes along with their these-are-the-best-shoes-ever gimmick. Later, we went for a walk together and the shoes started hurting him. The next day, we went to return them and the owner made the hugest deal stating that they were too dirty to sell to another customer and how if there were any doubts about the shoes, they should have been tried out inside. Yet, while he was trying the shoes out in the store, the employees encouraged him to try them outside. So, why was that not okay later? The owner was also wrong about how dirty the shoes were -they could have been cleaned in 5 minutes with a wet paper towel or, worst case scenario, sent to a dry cleaner. In the end, they agreed to give my boyfriend store credit, but then refused to help him find a new pair of shoes. Apparently, returning fairly pristine shoes because they are painful is ground for terrible customer service. NEVER go to this place. They will only rip you off by selling you heavily marked up shoes that probably aren't even right for you. read more

We went in this store today to try in some shoes. We liked the first shoe that we tried, so wanted to scan the price tag of the box to get an idea of how much it costs online. The store owner took the box out of my hand while i was trying to scan the tag very aggressively and said that "we don't scan boxes". Well, I AM SORRY you are not able to compete with like of Amazon in terms of cost. But such behavior will not only make the situation worse, as not only I will NEVER go back there, but also whoever asks for my opinion about this store I will suggest for them never to go there if they respect themselves. read more

Buying running shoes here helped me become the avid runner that I am today...and 30 lbs lighter. For years I never bought the right shoe...never had the right help. Got hurt. Didn't want to run anymore. I decided to stop in Murphy's Fit to figure out what I was doing wrong and to see how a shoe could help fix it. I was up front with them about my budget and no one ever treated me weird. This place stands by it's product and knows a ton about it. Now... Are the shoes top of the line here? Yes. Are they expensive? Most often. But if you check the web they cost the same there. I'd rather get input and pointers from the extremely knowledgable staff then purchase online...even if I do get free shipping. They have brands that you don't find everywhere. Mizuno, in particular, are my favorite. Go to foot locker if you don't want the best in quality and in service. I love this place. read more

I came in for a specific pair of shoe I had been eying in the window but the owner of the shop himself took the time to look at my stride and suggest a few other pairs that might be more beneficial. He have great insight into what we are looking for in a shoe with how our stride is and tips on how to lace up shoes that I had never been introduced to before. He even let me test out the shoes with a little jog on the sidewalk. I ended up with a saucony shoe that has been perfect so far, although he said they take returns if the shoe is lightly worn and just not the right fit- have to spend some time in the shoe to really know. I LOVE this place. Today was the third time I've bought shoes from them and it gets better every time. They spent 30 minutes with me and I felt like I was the only person in the store. They brought out 4 pairs of shoes from the get go and had me try everything on and walk until I was absolutely sure of the shoe I wanted. Man, I was bummed. I am all about shopping local and was thrilled to find this store just down the street from my new place. I went in and have to say, I was really not impressed. SO bummed. Not impressed as in, "Wow, I want to give them a thumbs down on Yelp!" I felt like the sales folks were trying to up-sell me without giving me any pricing options. I was put in the most expensive shoes that felt great, but after a few runs, I could tell they were NOT the right fit. Being a newbie at running, I needed a little guidance and while these folks are nice...they were not at all knowledgable :( Now I am stuck with $150 shoes that REALLY, REALLY hurt my feet. I went to Running Away Multi-Sport where I got a proper fitting. Foot pain, no more. And Running Away has a great return policy...Murphy's is a "you walk in it...you keep it". I was quite disappointed in the service here. My doctor refered me for orthotic insoles. My doctor told me they cost $27.00. When I got there I told the guy what I needed. He got it and put it right in my shoe and when I went to check out he tells me it was $35.00. Highly over priced. I found the same exact item on Amazon for $25.00. I think this place is great. I've read all of the other tepid reviews about the return policy and here's the thing, folks: this is a small, local business. We are so spoiled with all the big box, chain and online stores whose revenue loss is marginal on returns and can afford to have laid-back policies. In this day and age, it is possible to get a customized, personal fitting from Murphy's (or another small business), AND the immediate gratification of a purchase, only to walk out, order the exact same shoes at Zappos, Ebay, etc. and want to return the ones you bought. It's really no wonder that they HAVE to have a strict return policy, or they'd go under! I bought my second pair of shoes there in two years from the same salesman. I LOVED the first pair but wanted to try something minimalistic this time. He carefully observed my movement at different speeds and gave me a very honest and frank rundown of pros and cons regarding my plan. He brought out several different kinds of shoes for me to try that he thought were viable candidates, and at no point did I feel he was pushing the most expensive shoe or something that wasn't totally in my interest. Since I chose, on my own, to go for the most drastically different shoes from my current pair, he stated their return policy with FULL DISCLOSURE but also said that if I wanted to try them on a treadmill and found that I hated them, they would consider an exchange. I tried them on a treadmill first but ended up loving the shoes. Whenever people get up in arms about the quirkiness in customer service of small stores, I think about what it's like to shop in France -- if you're demanding and assume that the sales person should drop everything to worship at your feet, they're going to be curt and dismissive. Treat the sales person respectfully and with every intention to buy their merchandise (assuming reasonably that it's the right product), and you get great service. I'm not saying that this is the reason each negative reviewer had their experiences, but seeing the polarized trends, I'm tempted to guess that it has something to do with that. read more

I've walked by this store numerous times and never went in. I decided to get a pair of "real" running shoes. The sneakers at Payless always hurt my feet and even when I bought shoes at other athletic shoe stores. It helps that they are very knowledgeable about running and feet! I walked without shoes and we talked about how I walk on the outside of my heel and he(sorry, didnt catch name but I assume the owner?) brought me a couple pairs of shoes. They both felt great and I i felt the difference walking around in them( in the store). I did end up getting the more expensive pair of the three I tried on but price was never mentioned when I almost went with another pair. It was more about the fit then I asked how much... I was concerned about the price being from a smaller store and not a store with a huge inventory but when I went home the prices on numerous websites were exactly the same. I have walked/run more in the last week that I have in the last two years since I got these shoes..and my feet have yet to hurt!! They explained the return policy to me and while rigid it was fine. I could have left without buying anything. But I really felt like I had made the best choice! I will go back to buy my marathon runners someday! read more

My physical therapist referred me to them; she spoke very highly of the knowledge and the level of service. I went there and shared the information from the therapist. A type of shoe was recommended by the salesman, but they needed to special order for size. The gentleman never measured my foot, but I assumed he knew what he was talking about. The shoe did not fit when it came in and the salesman said there was nothing he could do for me. It looked like they had lots of other shoes, but he seemed much more interested in assisting a man who came in after me. I really wanted to support a local business by purchasing my running shoes at Murphy's Fit instead of a larger chain. I will never shop there again. They convinced me that I needed a motion control shoe due to "severe overpronation". Since running in these shoes, I've developed pain like I have never had before. After seeing a prominent sports medicine specialist in town, he said that the shoes are completely wrong for me and are very likely the cause of my ankle pain. I called the store and explained what was going on and they were rude, defensive, and condescending. I said that I was relying on them to be the experts and that I trusted them to fit me appropriately. I ended up going to Fleet Feet in Lincoln Square and got another pair of shoes that are a great fit. Their return policy is excellent. They get it that it takes more than 2 weeks to know if a shoe is right for you, especially when switching to a very different kind of fit. Murphy's Fit is a huge disappointment. Terrible service. I never made it in the front door. My schedule was such that I had to make an early appointment to visit the store at 9:30 instead of 10. After driving 30 minutes to get there, the woman I made the appointment with didn't even show up or have the courtesy to call me and cancel. There was a man inside the store, presumably getting ready to open at 10. He wouldn't even open the door to take my contact information. Usually i give people a couple chances, but not this place.
