It would be nice to have a local camera store that was community oriented and wasn't staffed with a bunch of condescending old men. This store has decent inventory, but is not worth dealing with the attitude. I have been to a variety of camera stores throughout the country and Murphy's Camera in Lexington provided the worst experience. This store needs a manager who knows how to run a locally owned business that fosters community engagement and creates a welcoming environment. read more

I've been dealing with Murphy's for about 1 years and have never been steered wrong. My most recent purchase was a new ball-head for my Bogen tripod. I purchased an MH496-BH for a very fair price and have been more than happy with it. The three controls are very easy to use and rock steady when tightened. read more

Nice Variety and good customer service. My husband bought me a nice z50 outfit for mothers Day spending around $1200. But refused to throw in an inexpensive camera bag or memory card. If it were my store, I would buy some at wholesale especially on occasions such as mothers day and really make customers feel special. Words cannot express how happy I am to live in a town with such a tremendous camera store. The staff is so helpful and friendly, and when I was looking for a new tripod, I never felt pressured into making a purchase. I've had the experience in some electronic stores of being talked down to, as if women don't know how to operate camera equipment. Not here. The staff is respectful and honest, and that goes a long way with me. "All I know is what works for me." That brand of laid-back salesmanship earned my business for life. Murphy's rental service is also wonderful to have when you're asked to do a job in short notice. Prices are lower compared to online rentals, and they have a wide variety to choose from. I went to Murphy's Camera in search of a used digital camera but was pleasantly surprised at their selection of used film cameras. I asked the salesperson if all their used cameras had been tested, which he said they had been. The model I was interested in had a battery compartment and he told me the battery was for the light meter and not the other workings of the camera. I bought the camera, a roll of film and a replacement lens cap for a total of $127. Imagine my surprise when I got home to discover that not only was the camera 100% battery operated, but that it could not open the shutter or advance the film which rendered it completely useless. I bought a pack of replacement batteries in case the one included was dead and none of them made the camera work. I brought the camera back a week later and they gave me a refund, but only for the camera despite the fact that I would not have bought a roll of film or a lens cap for a useless camera, let alone the useless camera to begin with. So, including the gas money for the 3+ road hours I drove for both trips and the replacement batteries, I basically gave up $50+ for the privilege of holding on to a broken camera for a week. I would expect a store whose sole purpose is the sale of cameras to not put a useless brick on their shelves, especially after claiming to have tested it. I can't comment on their expertise as far as new cameras go, but after this experience, I'm not about to find out. read more

BEWARE OF THESE SHIYSTERS. STAY CLEAR OF THIESE THIEVES! This is the worse, dishonest company that I have ever dealt with. They will first try a "bait and switch." Then if that doesn't work, they will charge you a $400 restocking fee for electronics. Before you get the chance to get back to them with the choice of whether or not to buy the more expensive product, they will ship you what you didn't even order. If you "Refuse" what they have sent to you unopened, they will not refund your entire purchase. They kept $60 of mine for absolutely nothing. They are absolute shysters and thieves. I don't see how they have stayed in business. I doubt that they will without lawsuits. read more

Ordered a camera online from them and didn't receive a confirmation email, so after six days I finally emailed to check and told them I was going to cancel my order if I didn't get one. Guy calls me the day after, explains that I ordered the international version, but when typing in the camera model only one listing comes up and nothing states that it is "international". Conveniently the USA model was $600 more expensive. I asked him to please email me and provide proof of that and I got "I don't need to prove anything to you, ma'am. I know the cameras and the website." Ended up cancelling my order. Do not recommend at all. Huge joke of a place and the staff are rude as hell. read more

For one of the only brick and mortar stores that offer these services, the attitude in this place is grim. Trying to ask questions to the staff is honestly humiliating, instead of belittling customers, why not be a place where people can go to learn and find passion for photography? The world of cameras can be so complicated and staff at Murphy's camera do a great job helping customers navigate through this world. I have been here on 3 separate occasions to buy 3 different DSLR cameras. No, I'm not a photographer! I just play the role of a courier to my photographer cousin when I travel overseas to visit my family. My understanding of DSLR cameras is basic and I'm not always given the proper list of necessary accessories to purchase. So I have walked in here on more than one occasion as one of the somewhat clueless customers. Staff here know their inventory and the compatibility of different accessories and cameras. In addition to a large selection of DSLRs, they also carry smaller point&shoot cameras. I have definitely enjoyed the personalized experience here that I wouldn't get at a bigger chain store. read more

Whenever I am shopping I frequently compare prices to those I see on Amazon. The prices here are competitive in that regard. Love my local camera store. I bought my first digital camera here and every one, thereafter. If they don't have something, they can get it. If you want to know more about something, they can answer it or find out. Always helpful, always friendly. I know some people order online to save a few bucks but it's not worth it, in my opinion. They're always willing to take something out of the box and show you or even rent their lenses if you want to try them first. They're not just random people working here either. I have been a customer of Murphy's Camera for almost two decades. I bought my first serious camera from them when I was a college student studying journalism and day dreaming of where my life would take me. I am currently one of the staff photographers at the Daily Inter Lake in Kalispell, Montana and I have just purchased yet another camera from Murphy's. The staff is exceptional, kind, friendly, and knowledgeable. Over the years I have worked for papers around the nation and no matter where I have lived I have always come back to this store to buy my gear. The primary reason for this is the way the staff treats me when something goes wrong. Yes, I could probably have saved a few hundred dollars over the years buying from the big internet providers. But buy a camera there and you are on your own. There is no one to ask questions of, no one to call and ask for help or advice from, no one to give feedback about what other customers have experienced. I would not trade the personalized attention I get from my sales rep for anything. This is a great store with a great staff. Whatever level you've reached with your photography, or whatever level you hope to attain, these people are a valuable asset and can help you on your way. read more

I downloaded two photos to their website that I needed printed and when I arrived two hours later, they still weren't processed. I was told only one lady does the photo printing and she takes long lunches. I asked when she would be back and they didn't know. Finally I received an email 20 minutes before they closed that my order was ready. I live on the other side of town and it was inconvenient for the customer. Management suggestion: put a notice on your website that advises your customers that orders take half day processing as the lady who does this takes long lunches. read more

NEVER AGAIN!! Horrible customer service. Condescending attitude. Very unwilling to come up with a solution to our problem. I am a firm believer in shopping locally and frequent stores like Josie's, Cha Cha's, John's Run/Walk Shop and The Black Market. I will however, never shop at Murphy's again. I purchased a camera there for my daughter and it broke 3 days later. When I went to return it, they would not do ANYTHING even though I had all the packaging available. Sadly, I found the exact same camera at Target later that day, for less $, and I know they take returns, no questions asked. Guess that's where I'll shop from now on. read more

Stopped in today to purchase batteries for my old Canon :"Sure Shot" camera--yes, it's old but it takes the BEST film pictures and is low maintenance, easy for me. A silver haired gentleman (I did not get his name but he looks just like the news guy Keith Morrison/Gordon Lightfoot) was available and offered help... I gave him my camera and said I just need batteries. He took one look at my camera and basically sneered at it and said it was messed up. Mind you, my camera DOESN'T look like it's 20 year's old--it could easily pass for a year old. The screw to open the battery case IS showing wear, but not overly stripped. He handed the camera back to me and I had to ask him for a screwdriver...He finds one and makes a half-hearted attempt to open it and says, NO, its warped and again, gives me back my camera. So, I then took one of my keys and easily opened it, said "girl power!!!" and gave it back to him. I've tried to support this local business... Two CR123A batteries to the tune of $16.94 every time I need them. The last time I came in I waited forever for my batteries while other customers with lengthy issues/purchases were waited on without ever acknowledging me/my wait. I realize my camera is old, but I shouldn't be shamed for embracing my good ole "Sure Shot"! If Murphy's doesn't want to take care of me and my Sure Shot, I'll go elsewhere for batteries.
