After a tip of from a friend in the area, however, I decided to roll the dice - or should i say, rice! I was greeted by an older lady with friendly face the moment I walked in the door. And after trying manfully but ultimately unsuccessfully to get the damn thing fully closed I took in my surroundings. I absorbed the brown colour scheme, three smallish tables and... I had taken in my surroundings. This was clearly one of those places were all the action was saved for the kitchen, or so i hoped. I looked up to see a menu board that boasted well over fifty items, including typical Japanese favourites (teriyaki noodles, Japanese curry) to more out of the box fare (octopus balls, eel). I went with a dish that was accompanied by a yummy looking photo and while I'm not entirely sure what the ingredients were it sure was tasty. As I ate I noticed the staff preparing fresh sushi rolls behind the counter and opted to try the spicy beef. Perhaps not a traditional choice but one I can heartily recommend. A sentiment that goes for Oishi Sushi also.

It's my favourite sushi haunt and it definitely helps that it's on the same street as my work building. With unique plates filled with buttery fish and a wide variety of cooked options including karaage, gyoza and dumplings there's something to please everyone. Service has been exceptional each time I eat here with water glasses being refilled regularly and helpful staff at every turn. It can be slightly more expensive than your bog-standard suburban train, but I'm willing to pay for the atmosphere and comfortable surrounds.

Great little spot in the new King Street Precinct at Bowen Hills…read more First visit today as its in close walking distance to my workplace, and we wanted to try one of the new restaurants in the King Street Precinct. They have simplified their 'plate pricing' by only have 2 types of plates on the menu - all plates with coloured rings around the edges are $4.50, the patterned plates / premium items are $8.00. Wide selection of fresh made sushi rolls, nigri, entree items (gyoza, prawn parcels, chicken karaage bites etc), premium items, desserts and miso soup on the sushi train, but you can also order from the menu. Tried a mini tempura prawn udon bowl soup for $8.00 and it was awesome. Brown rice and black rice sushi rolls on the train and lots of vegetarian options. They have a little takeaway window at the front of the restaurant with sushi rolls for a quick takeaway lunch. The chefs work fast, and all items on the sushi train are fresh, fresh, fresh. Takeaway can be made to order. Great spot for lunch, nice ambiance and friendly staff. Just make sure you get in early to beat the lunch crowds! Takeaway and catering also available.

I didn't know where, so once again, I used Urbanspoon, since it seems to be the foodie search engine here (rather than Yelp, though Yelp is rising!), and I found Kotobuki. Kotobuki is located near other casual open-air restaurants in a mini "food court" - which wasn't at all what I expected. What it did have is trinkets near the service counter, which I found cute and very Japanese, even though the chairs, tables, and dining ware were ordinary. I got the tempura udon, though I did contemplate on getting a sushi roll for a while. The udon was nice and "Q" and the soup base wasn't too salty (which tends to happen at restaurants), but I didn't like the tempura that much. It wasn't crispy at all by the time it got to me, which it should be at least by the time it reaches the table, and they were smaller-looking pieces of veggies and shrimp. The takoyaki was also alright, but they did load a generous amount of condiments on top. The place isn't expensive, so I don't have much to complain about, but since this place is a bit out of the way for me, I personally would stick to Noodle & Donburi.

Yes, quite a few people seem to know about it (even though it's kinda tucked away) so there can be a line. But also, YAY, yes it's quick, stupidly fresh and delicious. Sushi Kotobuki is on the list of restaurants I blame for my inability to eat shopping centre sushi. Screw you guys because I love you so much.
