They also have some nostalgic candy towards the back left side of the store. I bought some different flavors of salt water taffy and they were all good! I'm unexpectedly a fan of salt water taffy now. On our recent road trip, we stopped by Sacramento for a night and bought a random assortment of salt water taffy from Munchie's. Munchie's offers candies of all types, but we were drawn to their seemingly endless selection of salt water taffy flavors. We devoured the entire bag of taffy during our trip. I love the cute shopping baskets to select all of the flavors we desire. With the amount of taffy we bought, the price was less than $14! Some of our favorites were the S'mores, Cookies and Cream, Chocolate Caramel Mocha, Buttered Popcorn, and Grape. They really know how to make an adult feel like a kid again. read more

This place has the most variety of salt water taffy. You can grab a bucket by the front door and grab whatever candy you'd like to pay by the pound. The majority of the candy is salt water taffy, but there are other types of candy as well. The cashier usually leaves you alone and let you wander, which I appreciated. Once you're ready to pay, he's helpful. Some of the jelly slices appears old or melted together, so it was a bit less appealing. I come to Munchies Salt Water Taffy in Old Sacramento many times. Sometimes, I buy a few of my favorite candies. Sometimes, I want to check them out and hope to see some unexpected new candies. I have been in this store many times. I still feel impressed by the amount of candy in the store. The candies are all over this vast store. But they have enough room between all the candy. Shopping here is very comfortable because all the candy is nicely displayed in this extensive and well-lit showroom. The workers in Munchies are all super friendly. Kind of late, but better than never. I recently went to Old Town for a Christmas celebration (12/23/24) and decided to walk around the local businesses before settling in for our light show. When we walked in, we were met with a quiet calm that was a relief from the chaos of Old Town around this time of year. After looking for a while, my husband finally found his favorite: black licorice! A rare (-ly enjoyed by the majority, IMO) but nostalgic flavor that he holds dear. We are super tight on cash but decided to get him a couple of pieces for his stocking this year. The cashier that evening was so kind to give us the 2-3 pieces on the house as free samples. It not only made our night, but it relit our Christmas cheer. It is a rare sight to see someone not nickel-and-dime customers in this day and age. The cashier made what can easily be considered a modern-day Christmas miracle by our family's standards! In other words, what to many may seem like a simple gesture meant the world to our Christmas. How it was created is not very clear, some say it was a mistake and some say it was because of laziness, but it is generally agreed that it was created in the 1880s! Regardless, if you are in Old Sacramento area and have sweet tooth, you may want to stop by Munchie's, grab a little basket, walk through the rows of barrels containing different flavors of this wonderful creation and pick a few unheard of flavors to try! This is a pretty cool candy store in Old Town Sacramento. My aunt wanted to buy some candies so we decided to try this place out. They were well organized, spaced out enough and easy and fun to look around! I liked their salt taffy candies (they import from somewhere which I do not remember where the staff said ). The staff was following the state mask mandate and enforcing it right, which I definitely appreciate. It is ridiculous how few people rate business low because they were told to wear mask when the business is just following the law. I will go back next time in Old Town. read more

There are sooo many options for salt water taffy here; I love the variety! The taffy is $4.75 per half pound. With all the variety I just grabbed a few pieces of so many flavors lol. Yum! I LOVE salt water taffy but I'm really particular on the quality as I don't like the cheap kind with artificial flavors like the ones you can just buy at a trader joes. I was going to be in Old Sac and was looking on the internet at the different shops. I noticed Munchie's and because I love taffy decided to give them a try. I noticed on their Yelp account that it stated they offer 10% off any candy sold by weight. When I went into the shop I inquired how much the taffy was per pound and about the 10% off discount. I was informed that they do not give 10% discounts. I purchased about 1/2 pound of taffy. It is very tasty taffy. The reason I took off one star is because if a business states on their Yelp account offering a 10% discount, as a customer I feel they need to honor that or remove it from their account. read more

It's hard not to be completely reverted back to child status and going crazy but be careful! I had 5 or 6 ''samples'' and ended up feeling a little sick with a sugar buzz for some time after. Munchie's has the largest variety of salt water taffy I have seen and in so many different flavors - Bubblegum, Watermelon, Green & Red Apple, Cherry, Strawberry Cheesecake, Ginger Bear, Butter Popcorn, Pineapple, Banana Cream Pie, Birthday Cake, Jamaican Rum (one of my favorites!)... The list goes on. The store is filled with brightly colored bins with not just Taffy but also other goodies like Rock Candy, Tootsie Rolls, Fruit Jellies, Candy Corn ect and it's all done by weight. Simply grab a bucket at the door and fill to your hearts content. Most candies priced at $7.58 per lb. It's also not too busy either with plenty of space to walk around and browse freely. Indeed I love saltwater taffy. It's scary though because I could feel thunder thighs and love handles developing throughout my body as I explored the barrels of various flavors. THEN my husband, some of our family, and myself discovered even more nostalgic candy towards the back of the store. My mother-in-law demanded some of those Boston Baked Beans and I think Sugar Daddies. My husband grabbed Jolly Ranchers and others. My favorite taffy flavors--many of which I didn't try for fear of turning into an Oompa Loompa--were Raspberry Lemonade, Neapolitan, and Strawberry-Banana. Chunk any of your favorites into a little barrel. Hand it to the cashier. They weigh it. It turns out to be more than you expect, but what the hell? Anything you don't eat between September and Halloween can be given to Trick or Treaters, right? The next time I stroll up and down Old Sac I am definitely trying Guapa and Mango... probably a few others since the chick that works there kept announcing to people as they walked by to "feel free to sample what you like inside." It's like walking into a time machine and seeing all the old candy from my childhood that I forgot existed! Naturally, I had to take my friends who were visiting Sacramento to old sac for the day to putter around. Munchie's was an ideal stop because of the salt water taffy! I always love to wander around this store and sample a flavor or two before committing to a bad with a hodgepodge of taffy wonders. The extra price is paid in taste! This place is one where it's worth it to pay for quality candy. The taffy really is amazing here! I love chewy candies, so I definitely know my stuff, and it's delicious here. I was asking the store clerk about all kinds of old candies and it was interesting talking to her about her business. We built up a nice little repartee and I was more than happy to patronize her business. The only thing I have to say is that you ought to try to steer clear of candies you'd be able to find at a normal store like Longs, Target or Wallgreens because there's no point in paying extra for something you could get elsewhere, but the premium price is definitely worth it for things that are unique to the store like the saltwater taffy. This place is a heaven for those who are into candies. There are barrels and barrels of salt water taffy and various hard and soft candies. You can try as much free samples as you want! I bet most kids would love this place. Unfortunately these are no gourmet sweets (hence the 3 stars review). The candy flavors are artificial and most of them are not very distinct. Not really fit for foodies but if you are into candies you will probably like them. On the bright side, they are all fairly inexpensive. For a few bucks you will a long lasting sugar rush. Oh yes, salt water taffy are not (and have never been) made out of salty ocean water. read more

I came here around 9:30 pm a few nights ago and this place was dead (0 customers). There were 2 employees sitting at the counter. One girl said, "Hi" to me after I said, "Hello". The other guy...nothing. I walked around the store to check out the taffy selection. When I found what I wanted, I didn't see any bags laying around to put the candy in so I held onto them with my bare hands. If I had a bag, I would of bought more. During the whole time I was there, no one came over to ask if I needed any help. When I was finally ready to pay, the girl stood up and rang me up. I paid and left. As soon as I walked out the door, they dimmed the lights. One star for the candy. read more

One of the half dozen or so candy stores in ye olde town. Parking is street only, as there are no super popular bars/restaurants right next door you've got good odds of finding a space right out in front. Sometimes however there will be no parking, in which case there's some parking garages close by to resort to. If you're in the garage ask for ticket validation. Typically that knocks 15 mins or more off your parking tab. This place has the exact same layout/stock as two other places close by-loose candy in barrels, self service, priced by the pound. The pricing isn't that much different then the other stores. So why you say should I come here then? Ah well, this locations niche is old time candy. The selection of stuff that was popular in the 1880's is deeper and more prominent then other locations, also as an added bonus for those with small psycho...........er, toddlers, this is a much smaller/quieter store and thus it's a lot easier to manage a hyper excited 3 year old, which is helpful. So if you are interested in historical candy/want to reduce the odds of a toddler meltdown this is a good choice to be at. read more

Walked in here on a weekday afternoon to a friendly and sweet welcome! The place has a huge assortment of yummy saltwater taffy and old-school candies!! Each time I've been here, the employees let you try any sample of taffy you'd like! In my last visit, a homeless person came into the store asking a bunch of crazy questions loudly and yelling randomly. The employee (sorry for forgetting her name) handled the situation very well, kindly asking them to leave the store without sounding rude or offensive. I was pretty surprised at how well it went, most employees may freak out or go for offensive measures. Props to her! REMEMBER TO CHECK IN FOR 10% OFF!!! I haven't been to an Old Sac taffy shop since I was a kid! The taffy here is very yummy but that isn't the only thing they sell. They have old school type candy here like root beer bottle candies and so on. Although I didn't see any apple flavored taffy or anything that wasn't berry flavor. read more

If you like saltwater taffy, this place will be your wood-clad heaven on Earth. With only a few minutes left to browse until we were due at the Railroad museum, my kid and I were delighted to find this nostalgic-style candy store. Apparently they have every taffy flavor imaginable and then some, especially if you're looking for chocolate; chocolate malt, chocolate caramel, chocolate mint, chocolate peanut butter (the most popular, judging by how it was temporarily out of stock), etc. They also have flavors you probably would have never considered for saltwater taffy such as guava and mango. I just had to load up for my taffy-junkie better half. In case you're not into taffy however there are a lot of other less-common candies stacked in the barrels toward the back. Think fruit slice gummies, zots, unicorn horn lollies, push up pops, and retro candies that you probably thought weren't made anymore like walnettos. I was having 20th century flashbacks in spades. What you won't find is much in the way of chocolate or any more common, modern candies. That's just the way they roll here in Old Town. Since my sweetie approved of the taffy, Munchies officially gained must-try status for our every future visit to Sacramento. read more
