It was everything I want from an expensive night out. Attentive and concerned service from our waiter, Dominick; ambiance, highlighted by gorgeous lighting and an extended conversation with the Arkansas-originating proprietor; flavor-forward, yet balanced and textured appetizers and entrees. It's not for every night, but I'd be happy to come here on a future trip to Munich. Arriving to a nearly empty restaurant at 6:15p on a Friday night, my two dining companions and I all opted for the Korean barbecued steak after being guided through the pros and cons. Namely, the entire table must opt for either the a la carte menu, or for the tasting menus for that day; otherwise the dishes can't be timed properly. I dunno how Korean this steak was, but it was served at an appealing medium rare, and still cooking on the sizzling skillets it came in. It was textured, it was juicy, it was well seasoned. The accompanying onion added balance while not coming across too raw to eat. And we demolished the banchan. Everything had strong primary flavors, and balance, and still left room in my stomach for the mains. I don't regret blowing my calorie budget one bit. If we could give 10 stars, we would give Mun Restaurant 10 stars!!! My husband and I have eaten at many restaurants all over the world and Mun Restaurant is by far our favorite! From start to finish our dinner was delicious and served by Mun himself, along with his amazing service team Noah and Dominique! We honestly didn't want the dinner to end! Mun's creations and attention to each detail in our five course dinner was phenomenal! Each dish was impeccably displayed and was such spectacular experience that sent indescribable mouth-watering explosions with each bite! Cute, hidden, little restaurant specialising in oriental fusion cuisine (mostly Japanese and Korean inspired). I was impressed by the quality of the basic ingredients, the fish for sushi and tartares was good and fresh. I particularly liked the tuna tartare and the free starter: a bite-sized crispy rice ball topped with a delicious tuna-based cream. I was less impressed by a couple of other dishes, for example the texture of the scallop risotto wasn't perfect and the rice type maybe not right (I know as an Italian I am quite picky with risotto). I also found the combination with Korean spicy red sauce a bit unconvincing. The matcha soufflé lacked personality, although it was technically well prepared. The molten chocolate tart my friend hand was on the other hand very good. The wines were nice and interestingly matched. I liked the presentation of the dishes, although the orchids were a bit too recurrent as a decoration. The staff were really nice, informative, and helpful. The décor is pleasant and tasteful. One thing I didn't like about this place, which prevent me from giving it 5 stars (together with the points I mentioned above) is that the restaurant only offers set menus, that is you have a choice between a 4 or a 6 course, fish or meat menu, at a fixed price (58 or 88 Euro respectively) with or without matched wines. I heard about how phenomenal their restaurant from family members and decided to come here for my moms birthday. The restaurant is decorated elegantly and very cozy. We opted for the sushi platter which was quite filling. Chef Mun's special was quite exquisite. Its on the pricey side but its very worth it! The house made soy sauce was paired so beautifully well with the sushi and the mai tai is exemplary.. I can't wait to go back again! Service is excellent despite being full house every single day! Chef Mum and Cary were both very accommodating. The servers are all professionals and very attentive. High class resto it is!! Hotel standards if you want to call it. Let me begin this review with saying I don't typically write reviews unless I'm extremely happy or immensely disappointed. In this case, it is extreme pleasure! I had the wonderful fortune of discovering a new Munich gem; MUN Restaurant. A sushi, Asian-fusion hideaway with creative and traditional dishes representing the full spectrum of Asian cuisine. MUN has a speak easy, swanky club kind of vibe, with beautiful lightly and fixtures that lend itself to a special and memorable evening. Wow! It was amazing. Being a native Californian (Santa Barbara to be precise, the home of Uni) who was raised on sushi and now residing in New York City, where some of the best chefs reside, I'm not easy to please. But please I was. The fish was unbelievably fresh and delicious and the presentation was a work of art. They make their own soy sauce and ponzu sauce adding a whole new dimension of taste. They also add creative touches and spices that greatly enhance the flavor of dish. We had the Omakase (Chef's choice) with the wine pairing. I didn't write down the names of the wines but they worked perfectly with each dish. It's clear every wine selection was thoughtfully and lovingly made to ensure the optimal flavor experience with the accompanying course. The right wine really makes a difference. You know you're going to have a wonderful meal with the Amuse Bouche is tasty pair of spicy tuna on crispy rice. My bouche was greatly amused. Next came the nigiri sushi that was incredibly fresh and the ideal temperature. The salmon, tuna and hamachi were super flavorful and the scallop was sweet and melted in your mouth. A special treat, if you can get it, is the yellow tail belly. Slightly seared and unbelievably delicious. It's like butter in your mouth. The next course was the Hamachi sashimi with a tasty sauce made with soy sauce, ginger and pomegranate seeds. The ginger gives it a wonderful little kick that's a perfect pair with the tangy pomegranate. Next came the tuna tar tar with crispy won ton. I have to admit, this is one of my favorites. It had the ideal mixture of spice and sweetness with the added crunch of pine nuts. One of those things you'll find yourself craving the next day and the day after that. One of the more inventive dishes came next, albacore sashimi with a ginger infused special sauce. Beautiful & Delicious! Perfectly cooked, flakey, buttery black cod with Kochujang glaze followed. Black Cod; also known as butter fish; is one of my person favs and this preparation was perfect! Not overly sweet or over glazed, with the ideal texture. We moved onto something a little more traditional on the next course. Bipimbob. A Korean staple and a tough dish to get right. MUN nailed it. The rice is the key to Bibimbob and it was done perfectly. I had fresh salmon and avocado; super YUM! It worked perfectly with the spices and vegetables. I don't know where MUN gets their salmon but it's out of this world. The final course was dessert. Homemade macaroons with fresh sorbet. A new take on cookies and cream, for sure. The macaroons are worthy of a review all by themselves. Delicious! I had black sesame (one of my personal favorites!) and key lime. And the sorbet was a great compliment. Together they had the right blend of sweet and tangy that finished off an amazing meal and evening. Finally.. and no less important, was the service. Top Notch! Every person was over the top friendly and helpful. Every course served with precision and they paid attention to every little detail. Very impressive. I had a chance to speak with the owners, Mun and Cary, and they are wonderful. It's clear they truly care about their patrons and are devoted to providing a high end, outstanding dining experience. Now if I can just get them to open a restaurant in NYC. ;) I don't get the Munich often, but this is now my destination restaurant for sure. I can't recommend MUN restaurant enough. What seemed like a simple restaurant from the outside, revealed a very private, classy and romantic restaurant inside that offers OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD dishes. I've eaten Japanese food in over 40 countries, and I have to commend the chef for his innovative take on Japanese cuisine.
