Interestingly, Yelp was mentioned a number of times as far as getting more testimonials written about your business. Unfortunately, being an editor and writing coach, I am not sure my business fits the Yelp model, but now you know! And you can always shoot me a DM. Even though I had been asked to bring my own lunch -- this class being offered from 12:30 to 2:30PM -- the SBDC hosted the event with plenty of vegetarian options to snack on (yay, Greek wine leaves with rice) and the water was nice and cold. Definitely will try to attend more meetings here.

Metro, Metro, Metro...how I love you…read more I once felt overwhelmed with the thought of decreasing my day-to-day footprint on the Earth. I like to lead a healthy & low impact existence but it isn't always convenient. Sure, now we have the big blue bin that I can throw my paper, plastic bottles and cat food cans into, but where do I recycle my block styrofoam or my old computer parts for free? Where can I get some info on how to compost my food scraps at home without buying some $15 book on home composting? How about a list of DIY at-home green cleaners made with ingredients from my local Freddy's? And then, there was Metro. Not only does Metro have free pamphlets on all of this info plus more, you can also get all of the info off of their website at: http://www.metro-region.org/ and save trees (if your a hippie like me and can't help but consider those lovely trees) They have info on: - nature & local GreenScene activities - garbage & recycling - sustainable living - getting around Portland w/o a car - planning & conservation For those of you with families out there they have "Story & a stroll at Tryon Creek" geared towards kids in nature. If you are a novice green-thumb like me in the spring/summer they offer FREE classes on natural gardening. Or even if you don't recycle at all, but your neighbor asks you what they can do with their old car tires, you can give them Metro's recycling # 503-243-3000, and you have just done your good deed for the day. Overall Metro gives me good balance. I can be lazy, yet proactive. I let them gather the info and then I take advantage of it. Thanks for doing the legwork Metro, now I can feel better about myself! ; )

Multnomah County Library is one of the city's best institutions - I have found some of my favorite…read moreauthors from librarian recommendations, and being our neighborhood ballot drop spot makes them even more of a benefit to the community. That being said, I'm disappointed with both the process and the results for the recent Belmont Branch renovation. The old branch didn't have much in the way of parking, and they intentionally made it worse. Much worse. The public was allowed 'input' on the design of the new space, and the response to my questions about their survey claimed that a 'majority' of the public preferred the new design (the actual results were 317 votes out of 812 cast for this illusion of choice). The voting was for one of three designs, where one of them would involve the unthinkable destruction of the historic wing, and both of the other options had vastly reduced parking. Clearly, all decision making had been done before asking the public. According to PSU, over 156,000 people live in the 12.5 square miles of the two mile radius service area for this branch. A claim that this many people prefer walking, biking, or public transit for their library visits is absurd. The results of the recent construction are underwhelming - if you stand in the doorway between the new lobby and the old building (now the children's library), you see a bright, open space in the old wing, and massive beams supporting the ceiling of the new lobby, visually reducing the height of the space, making it dark and unwelcoming. For some reason, the lobby floor is higher at the south end of the lobby, requiring stairs and a ramp to take up prime space inside the entrance. All in all, the ground floor of the expansion seems to only contain a book return, a holds pickup area, a two person librarian's counter, and self service checkout kiosks. I assume there are workspaces for staff, but a claimed doubling of space offers very little for library patrons. I wish we received more for our money - the barn that they slapped onto the end of the old building seems lazy and drab.

Unfortunately, Portland's Chinatown was the most disappointing one I've ever seen. Instead of the vibrant neighborhood I was hoping for, it felt more like a ghost town. The stores seemed closed and vacant and the vibes were way off. There were lots of homeless and highly agitated people. There was an odor of urine on the street and my brief stop there left me feeling sad. After reading about this neighborhood, it seems it has struggled for years with the effects of the pandemic declining tourism, public safety concerns, homelessness, addiction, and the loss of many long-standing businesses. It's sad because you can still see glimpses of what this neighborhood on e was and what it could be again. I hope the City community organizations and local business owners begin investing in the area again and restoring public safety and access to mental health services. I hope to return years from now and see it restored to what it should be but for now, I can recommend prioritizing any kind of stop n this area.
