Fast, non-invasive x-rays, the ability to fabricate crowns in-house, huge staff...felt like it was a step in the right direction. Fast forward to now, and I feel differently. I had one crown done, as a tooth had cracked. I was given a $1,000 estimate with the standard disclaimer that I'll be responsible for the actual amount. No problem, I know the drill, as I have had dental work done in the past. The problem was their "estimate" was 100% off, and now I'm being asked to pay $2,000 for a crown that was supposed to be $1,000. From my perspective, if my job was to deal with insurance companies on a daily basis and I had hundreds of patients and thousands of EOBs, I should be able to get closer than being half-way to the actual price. I can't help but feel like I was taken advantage of. Had I known the actual price, I likely would have shopped around and had the work done elsewhere. On my next cleaning visit, the dentist told me I needed something like 6 or 7 MORE crowns. How many of those are medically necessary, and how many are to add billable income, since they cost so much more than insurance covers, AND can be done in-house?

However this office was taken over by the Beck brothers. Dr Preston Beck being my new Dentist the last couple years. Christmas Eve I cracked a tooth and I came in a few days later to see Preston Beck telling him of my tooth pain. I told him I thought I cracked a tooth. He did not take X-rays. He mostly ignored my complaint and tried to sell me Invisalign braces. I left and a few days later I called saying I have tooth pain and really need my tooth checked out properly. I came in and ask him to xray it. He told me a crack can heal on its own and that an xray probably wouldn't show a crack anyway. He tokd me I had a cavity in the side tooth and he put a filling in it. About a week later, still in pain I called again and said. I really think my tooth is cracked and I need it checked. I came in and this time he did an xray. He told me I need root canal. I was sent to a speciality in Paso for a root canal. This doctor reviewed the X-rays I brought closely and said he could see a crack in the tooth on the xray and that he cannot do a root canal on a cracked tooth. I made my own appointment with another office to have the tooth pulled So it took 3 visits to Dr Preston Beck. He never properly identified the issue. He put a filling in a cracked tooth. And I had to pay my share for all those wasted visits. I was in pain and taking a lot of ibuprofen for a month during this time. I can only say I do NOT recommend Atascadero Hills Dental. I found another Dentist. . Also the office is very short staffed. Most the office staff that used to fully cover the front office is gone. The woman who did finances and had her own office is gone and her office was turned into a tiny makeshift dental station. I really dislike being assigned to this station as it is too small and has no sink because it wasn't meant to be a patient care office, it was for an office staff and was for financial agreements in the past. In addition to my misfortunes the time with the cracked tooth this office told me I owed $332.00 as my share after delta dental paid. I received my EOB from Delta stating I only owe $79. I kept calling and trying to get someone one the phone. Messages left for the Accounting person were not returned. Eventually I called the front office and got someone to check this and refund my overcharge. After about 2 months I finally received a check in the mail for the overcharge. This should not of occurred but the person who was doing the front desk estimated my share completely incorrectly and grossly overcharged me. This is why the office needs an actual financial person and not just a receptionist handling billing.

They made the whole experience seamless--from the compassionate and helpful receptionist who took my call, to the friendly dental assistant who calmed my nerves, to Dr. Joe who introduced himself with a warm handshake and kind smile. He explained everything to me as he checked my crown, and was very gentle during the entire procedure. They made it quick, easy, and painless. I left with my issue fixed! Although I don't live in Paso, I highly recommend them.

It was extremely rough and more painful than anything I've experienced before. My gums were left irritated and bleeding way more than what's normal for a routine cleaning. I know there is discomfort and yea I don't floss every day, I get my teeth cleaned every 6 months and nothing compared to this visit. I usually go to brightwood dental in Atascadero but recently my insurance changed and iv paid out of pocket to come to Paso Robles dental before and thought it was great besides this visit There was also no real patient care. No check ins, no communication.. nothing. At one point I had saliva/water running down my face down to my neck and the hygienist didn't do anything until I was trying to stop her so I can clean it myself, then she proceeded to give me this 2x2 piece of gauze that was clearly not enough for the amount of spit that I had come up . That alone says a lot about the level of attention here. The biggest issue is the cleaning didn't even feel finished. The backs of my teeth didn't feel cleaned, and there was no mirror check or any effort to confirm the job was done properly. For $199, this felt rushed and low quality. I won't be back. If you're paying out of pocket, I'd think twice before coming here. I was going to book an appointment after this one to do their teeth whitening package but after this experience i will be going elsewhere. I swear this is true! Almost two years and $7500 later, I am now finished with INVISALIGN....caused by the tight crown pushing my teeth to the side such that one of my front teeth was slightly overlapping the other. Just Saying!!!!!! P.S. It says I live in Palm Desert.....haven't lived there in 5 years....otherwise, I would have gone to my wonderful dentist there. I now live on the Central Coast of California.

It took me years to find a dental office and oral surgeon I truly trusted--both of whom retired in 2017. Since my last dental visit in 2018 or 2019, I've been searching for a new provider I could feel confident about, and was not judgmental. I had a clear checklist in mind: I wanted a modern facility that keeps up with the latest technology, a fully staffed team (because that tells me the work environment is healthy and people like their jobs), a spotless office (you'd be surprised how many aren't), and a staff that exudes confidence (because if they're nervous, it makes my anxiety even worse lol). Long story, short--Aspen Dental in San Luis Obispo checked all my boxes, and then some. They never pressure me into treatments I'm uncomfortable with and provide education at whatever level you're comfortable with. For example, I like to know everything--what we're doing, why we're doing it, all the details. My husband, on the other hand, prefers to get in and out with minimal conversation. They can accommodate both of us perfectly. I recently had a two-hour deep cleaning appointment + a mouth cancer screening they offer (LOVED IT btw. Gave me peace of mind). A good chunk of that time was spent on prep and education, which I appreciated. The cleaning itself was incredibly thorough--I recommend asking to be numbed beforehand because they really get in there. Not in a bad way, just very deep and detailed. You might be a little sore afterward, but it's worth it. Also, she knew how to administer novocaine shots with minimal pain. Trust me, I know, I've had many shots that were not as pleasant. If you've made it this far--just book the appointment. Face your fears. (And if you're really nervous, 50mg of diphenhydramine about 30-60 minutes beforehand can help you relax. Thats what I did!) :)

The wait times were absolutely horrific and I never felt like my care was primary over their next patient service to perform. The cleaning was so minimal I didn't know it had been performed. Do not use your insurance to go her. Go to a private dental office for good care. I was told I needed fillings replaced and a crown. After a 2nd opinion all assessments were absolutely unnecessary. A friend had a crown done by them and ended up with an abscess.
