I just wanted to say how wonderful the groomers are here. I have two pups, a big Boston Terrier and a Great Dane. They are so kind and patient with Luna the Dane. She is nervous, but has gotten so much more confident, and I have no doubt that the patience of the staff here has helped! Gimli the Boston just loves everyone! I am thankful for their help and always happy to have fresh puppies! read more

We came in to get our scottie groomed and couldnt have been happier! Not only did the manager, Lana, listen to our requests attentively, she also gave some fantastic suggestions and was very knowledgeable. They were slammed in there, but as busy as it was, she took the time to hear us out and help us decide on the cut we wanted for our dog. He came out looking like a million bucks and was in a great mood. They groomed and bathed him for just $45. Phenominal service and they treated my dog with love. I will come back here again and again, no doubt. If you have a scottie, this is the best place in Hampton Roads to get them groomed. Believe me, I've searched and no one comes close to the amazing job Muddy Paws did. read more

Muddy Paws - Hiccup after his cut.. - Pet Stores Near Me - Norfolk, Virginia

Declining customer service. Disinterested staff. My dogs groomed here for years. No more. This place has changed for the worse. For example, rather than telling you by phone when you make an appointment that they want specific documentation on such-and-such a shot, they wait until you show with your dog and then turn you away. Twice this happened to me. Both times, I would've happily have brought the documents with me, if I knew they were required. Instead, Muddy Paws groomers unnecessarily wasted an hour of my day while I retrieved the documents. Staff smugly shrugged it off as if it were nothing. read more

I took my 10 year old fluffy mix here for a de-shedding treatment. They did a good job on her cut and bath and she seemed pretty calm about the whole experience. But, I have one major complaint: my dog was pretty dehydrated when she got back. Since my dog is so fluffy, it takes a long time for her to dry thoroughly. She was at Muddy Paws for 4 hours and I guess she didn't get access to water while there. I will be asking about this the next time I book an appointment. read more

Great groomers, awesome selection in the store, and the daycare is convenient. My one poodle (who is a rescue and is still very skittish) did not do well with the other dogs in daycare, so the women working at the front desk let both of my dogs stay up at the front with them. I thought that was very considerate. My only qualm is that they don't accept tips via card-- which seems like something they should look into. The store is pricier than a big box store, but the people who work there are more knowledgeable and there's usually specialty items you can't find elsewhere. Plus there are cute daschunds slinking around read more

I've stopped in a few times for pet food. I've never received the top notch treatment like I should for paying top notch for my pet food. I occasionally go there when I am in the area because they sell quality brands, I just don't expect much customer service wise. I did however have my cat groomed there and they seemed to have done a great job. She was surprisingly un-traumatized and very clean. Nikki read more

As good as it gets! Love this place...wouldn't take our fur babies any place else!

Wouldn't think to ever go anywhere else. They always have everything we need and treat our frenchie with incredible love.

Called to make an apt and was told one thing on the phone and something totally different (with regards to how much time my dog would spend in a kennel and how much the grooming would cost) when I brought my dog in. I'd been here once before and was very happy but I was really turned off this time. read more

I just want to everyone to know how amazing these people are! My dog is a rescue and he is very scared of people and new environments, the fact that he wags his tail when we pull up shows the true character and soul of the workers. We been going for over 2 years and now he has worked his way to the Dremel! Everyone Has been so Patient with him. Durning our earlier days I always even told I could bring him up there, not for a service, but to get him more comfortable with people and they would give him a treat. They remember him every time we come regardless how many months have past since our last visit. Finding a place where a dog with extreme social anxiety and fear of people feels comfortable is such a huge blessing. I can't show my appreciation enough. Also the knowledge they have on diet concerns is incredible. One day for over 30 minutes one of the employees just talked to me about food brands, types, recommendations. They are very well educated and when expressing their opinions they never talk negative about other choices or try and up sell you. I truly believe they have your dogs best interest at heart and they really do love what they do and are very passionate about it. Try it out and you'll be won over by their heart in soul they put into they're work. Thank you! From Georgie and his mom! read more

Less than one star. Really cannot understand how difficult it is to cut a pets hair. They stated they will need to go "a little" shorter because they stated our pets hair was matted a little bit. They shaved her completely. This is the second time they have done this. We will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER go back to Muddy Paws. I warn all of you out there to go elsewhere. Christmas time and we can forget Christmas photos because this establishment can not hire professionals. Stay away. read more

I am responding to that review that was written earlier today about barking dogs and nasty comments. Of course there are dogs running loose but not all the time. Maryann the owner let the dogs out to come see me. I am very attached to them. Maryann asked the woman if she needed help and I cannot remember the exact response but she was asked. As far as the nasty comments the owner had nothing to do with any comments. Muddy Paws is a wonderful place for owners and their pets to hang out. Your pets are in excellent hands when they are at Muddy Paws! read more

I will never go back to this place again for grooming. First of all, the only friendly people there were the girl who answered the phone when I first called to make the appointment and the groomer. Others were very unfriendly and borderline rude. I have 2 mini yorkies and I took them here to get the full service grooming. One of them came back with horrible cuts in 5 different places on her body - both of her ears, both of the front legs and one on her tummy. They are clearly clipper cuts - small chunks of skin missing in the same shape of clipper blade. She kept on licking and scratching since she came back from the grooming and I looked to find red swollen cuts all over her. The groomer didn't even bother to tell me about it when I picked them up. Dogs are dogs, accidents happen, but at least come clean and tell the owner about what happened. And, for the grooming service itself that my dogs received.....let me just say, they've had better haircuts before. I have not used their other services, such as training or boarding, and therefore can't say anything about them, however I probably will not come back here for any of their services anyways. If they don't even have the decency to tell me about the accidents that happened during grooming, who knows if they'll ever tell you if anything happens during boarding. These are my precious dogs, I'm not taking chances again. This place will not get a second chance from me. read more

3 strikes... And I'm done with Muddy Paws! Strike 1, not to mention our first visit: I picked up my 4 lb maltese and was informed that her paw pad was cut during her grooming apt... Which MY DOG was blamed for. My dog is 10 years old and she's NEVER come back hurt or had any issues at the groomers. Hmmmm ok, accidents happen I get that.. Strike 1 forgiven and I'll give them another shot. Strike 2: I walk in to drop my dog off around 10am... The grooming dept couldn't find her appointment. Ok things happen I thought... I keep a detailed calendar and I know when I made the appointment but ok... Maybe it was MY fault. The woman behind the desk in the grooming dept was SO incredibly rude to me, letting me know she was very annoyed and blaming me for screwing up the appointment. The girl on the side of her said they had been having issues with the computer and was very sweet... Not anything like her miserable co-worker who wouldn't stop slamming the mouse down, sighing LOUDLY and rolling her eyes. They ended up taking my pup for her SCHEDULED appt but not after expressing how annoyed they were, and not to let this happen again... BUT STILL I gave them another chance! Strike 3: I drop my pups (I have 2 now) off at their usual 10 am appointments... I tell them the exact same thing everything I drop them off... That I get off at 4 and I'll be here to get them as soon as I get off, the lady tells me "yes of course that's fine, noooo problem" well around 3Pm I get a phone call saying my dogs have been put into their daycare center and I will be charged an additional daycare fee because I didn't pick them up when they called and said they were ready. "UM WHAT?" I was told "sorry ma'am that's our policy" when I went an hour later at 4:15, exactly like I said I would, I asked to speak with a manager. I explained my confusion to her and she basically patted me on the head like a puppy, and explained their "policy". "Ma'am you should have been told about the policy when you came in and we will waive the fee but we cared for your dogs and gave them water, that's where the daycare fee comes in." WHAT?!?!?! So in order to get proper care for my animal I have to pay the $50+ grooming fee per dog AND a daycare fee? I'm sorry but that's RIDICULOUS. If you want to rip people off you need to think of a better excuse. Did I mention the VARIOUS times my pups had been there until well after 530pm. That was very inconvenient for me, but hey that's none of my business! Hopefully on those days my dogs were "cared for and given water" I really honestly tried to like this place! It's cute, has great reviews, my dogs don't seem to mind it, and it's near my work. But I'm done with this place, 3 strikes too many. read more

Great place for a variety of high quality food and snacks. The low rating is solely based on the bad experience I had with the grooming department. I have a rescue Maltese mix that must be groomed regularly and I found that our groomer here was inexperienced and rushed. They cut the pad of my dogs foot when trimming his nails while he was flipping out (which he doesn't normally do), didn't clean his ears, and gave him a mediocre cut. Instead of apologizing for cutting him, they gave me excuses saying that his nail had grown into the pad so it was unavoidable to not cut his pad, and "some dogs are just really unlucky in having their nails grow so close to their pads." Again, I've been getting my little friend groomed for five years with a variety of groomers across the country and this has never happened. Also, IF his nails were growing into his pads, that's a serious and painful condition that would need to be addressed by his veterinarian. Additionally, I was told it would be three to four hours and at four hours and when I hadn't heard from them, I showed up and had to wait another thirty minutes or so until they were done. Based on other reviews I'm sure some of the groomers are great but I'm kicking myself for straying from our regular groomer in Newport News for the sake of my convenience in trying to find somebody closer. Groomers are like doctors, when you find a good one, stick with them. The groomers were really busy and I'm sure they're under a lot of pressure to churn out business and perhaps this is the standard here but I found it unprofessional and frustrating. More than anything, I'm sad that my little friend had to experience this. read more

Took Gemma in for a walk in nail trim & they were so nice & treated my girl good, can't thank you enough!

We've been going to Muddy Paws for about 1.5 years. When we first started going we were less than impressed with the service. The people who worked there (including the owner) were so rude and acted like they couldn't care less if you gave them your business. Even though we liked their facility better than Wags on 21st street and they are cheaper, we didn't use them for daycare solely because of their ambivalence towards their customers. We only used them for boarding because they were close by (although we considered going other places) and they seemed to treat the dogs right. Our dog always came home happy from her stay. Around November/December of 2010 they seemed to hire a few more people to their staff who are so friendly and helpful that we began to use them more for daycare. They actually say hi to the customers... what a concept! It is now a pleasure to drop off our dog and because the staff now interacts with the customers in a positive way we are sending our dog here more and more. Occasionally, there will be employees who work there from earlier who for some reason don't know how to interact with people (which is why this gets 4 stars), but overall it is a much better experience with the better customer service. Please don't revert back to your old ways... read more

My pup Lucy has always gotten her nails done at the vet's office because she typically paw aggressive. Maybe her old age is kicking in, but Muddy Paws handled her like a charm and never even needed to muzzle her. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for grooming needs or for specialized food. The selection of toys and treats looks phenomenal too. read more

After adopting my puppy and learning that his breed is prone to skin allergies...I was in need of a pet store with wheat free dog food. I had driven by Muddy Paws several times a week while in my neighborhood and noticed their healthy pet store sign. The woman who helped me was very knowledgeable and helped me pick out the right kind of puppy food, treats for training and a few toys. Sampson loves them all! I also looked into a few doggie daycares and by far Muddy Paws is the best! They have two large play rooms, great outdoor area and it's very clean. Definitely doesn't smell like dogs when you walk in. Lisa, who runs the doggie daycare is awesome & you can tell the dogs love it there. They offer half day or full day daycare for very reasonable prices. Overall I love this place and Sampson does too! Perfect for all your dog's needs! read more

One of the worst deshedding jobs. Before coming to the Hampton blvd location, I went to the downtown location (before they closed) and absolutely loved them. They were so nice and updated me about how my dog was throughout the grooming. However, this location was not the same. Staff was kind of rude and I'm honestly not completely sure they deshedded my dog? I always notice a difference/decrease in the amount of shedding my dog has after getting her groomed, but there was NONE this time amount. I obviously didn't expect my dog to not shed at all but I feel as if they only groomed her and thats it; despite me paying for the deshedding. Disappoint to say the least read more

So I ended up going to Muddy Paws one day after leaving the vet's office with my new puppy, a Dobie, who was only 10 weeks at the time. They gave me great advice about toys for her to keep her busy in her crate, as well as let me know all about their great grooming rates for puppies! When I started taking her there, ALL the staff were beyond great with my dog, and the more I brought her in, it seemed even more and more of the staff knew who she was, even if I hadn't met them! That made me feel SO wonderful about leaving her there (and that was just for grooming). Once the puppy got all her shots, I was able to leave her there for daycare. WOW - not only is it convenient (I don't feel so guilty about leaving her in the crate all day) but she gets a ton of exercise, and the dog has made friends! How do I know that, you ask? Because I called to check on her (as all over-protective parents do on the first day) and they had told me exactly what had been happening with her all day and shared the names of the dogs she played with! When my puppy got home, she was sooooo tired, that she snuggled up and slept like she had a WONDERFUL day. I can't say enough about this place; LOVE IT! read more

So after shopping around at every dog daycare place listed on yelp I finally settled on trying Muddy Paws and here's why: First off they've won Best of Norfolk multiple years in a row. Second I liked that they offered grooming. Some days it's nice to have someone else bathe the pup, and if I drop her off at daycare, I can schedule an appointment and they'll take her that day. Third they have the dogs broken up by size/energy level, so no dog gets bullied around or ganged up on by dogs larger or rougher than they are. My dog started going when she was a little smaller so it was important to me she wasn't getting run over by the larger breeds. Overall I'd say the experience has been good. My dog is always tugging at the leash to get in and play and she always comes back exhausted. Which to me says she has a great time while she's there. And when ever I pick her up there's always a staff member keeping an active eye on the dogs. Muddy Paws runs varying deals through out the month so it's good to keep a keen eye to make daycare there am even better deal, but they are already offering daycare at a price comparable to the cheapest in town, so to me getting their deals only makes their good prices great. Highly recommended to create happy owners and even happier pets. read more

So, I have some good things and some not so great things to say about Muddy Paws. Good things are that for such a small retail facility it is VERY well stocked, they have a wide selection of food, toys, treats and all things doggy necessary, and above all: they keep it organized. (their prices are a little steep, but I would still shop there) The staff was pretty knowledgeable, very friendly and genuinely excited to meet me and my dog! Now, for the not so good. I toured the daycare side of the facility, it smelled completely of urine. The dogs were left 100% unattended (they have access to outside which I am uncomfortable with - how tall is their fence? What if a dog escapes? they would never know) and the staff brought a client's dog out to meet mine.... (what if mine wasn't friendly? what if he had rabies or wasn't up to date on vaccines?) One of the staff members gave my dog multiple treats without asking, and then turned around and told me "I love to feed the dogs, I get in trouble for it all the time" ... um... hello..... So, to summarize, the retail section was great! However, I would never leave my dog there for daycare.... read more

I went here looking for a special rabbit food for baby bunnies, as my boyfriend and I have a 4 month Flemish Giant. While they don't actually carry rabbit food (they focus on dogs and cats), the owner was more than happy to order it for me, assuming I bought 2 bags and put a deposit down. This is much better than any other store I've been to - other stores either carry it (rarely - the only store I know of that does is in Fairfax, VA), or they refuse to order it. She was super helpful, even looking through several of her distributors to find me the best price she could offer me. Also, any pet store that has dogs in it is always okay in my book. It shows me that they care about the animals. But if you're afraid of dogs, don't let this phase you. They're behind the counter or in the office, unless you let the owner know you're okay with them being out. read more

Took my miniature dachshund here for a bath, blow dry, ear cleaning, teeth brushing and nail trim. Called and got a same day appointment on a Sunday. I am extremely happy with my experience and the way my baby was treated. She came home smelling great! Will definitely be returning! read more

Muddy Paws - She feels so much better after her bath today! - Pet Stores Near Me - Norfolk, Virginia

We took our puppy Berkeley to get her first "puppy cut" over the weekend and could not have been more pleased with how the groomers treated us. This was her first grooming appointment, so we were unsure of how she would do, and it was also our first time dropping her off anywhere for an extended period of time. I wish I had gotten the man's name, but as soon as we walked in one of the male groomers played with her to make her feel comfortable, and said he was going to make sure she had the best experience. When we picked her up he took time to tell us how well she did, and educate us on what we can do at home to continue to keep her grooming in great shape. Her cut looks great - but even more importantly, we were so appreciative of how well he took care of her! read more

I know I have said it before but I must say it again, I truly trust and love Muddy Paws! It goes far more than the great grooming and day care for my two dogs. I have used them to board several times and they always come home smelling sweet. Recently I realized that what Muddy Paws really stand out is the experienced advice you can get from the professional staff. They have helped advise me on foods (changing to grain free or some with more fish oils if the dog's skin was dry). The staff even took the time to show me how to use their products to clean my yellow lab's ears! Many places would just refer my to the grooming department. I love that when I walk through the doors of Muddy Paws, the staff knows me and asks about my dogs by name. Not to mention the carry the very important "squeak squeak " tennis balls that are the only kind my dogs will use! The owner has even been willing to order a product for me if it is something I really think will be useful for my dogs. One of the newest additions to their food/treat line are natural marrow filled bones (kept in a freezer case). These are AMAZING and keep my Golden and Lab busy for hours! Keep up the good work! It is so nice to have you right down the street! read more

Best place I've ever boarded my dogs. I also buy their food here and they get groomed here as well since they usually hit the free bath mark on their stays. Their food prices are very competitive - at least for the brands I purchase. They are about the same price I'd pay online but without the hassle and cost of shipping. After a couple stays, the staff knew who my dogs were by sight. They know which one is friendly and which one is still a bit shy and they WORK with them. They've both been coming here since they were puppies and they each had their own puppyhood problems and the staff worked with them a bit which has helped both tremendously. They're not just sitting around in cages and then going play-crazy, they get quality attention from members of staff as well. When I pick my dogs up, I get a progress report on how they did. Every time I hear about how my youngest dog has improved in some way. I cannot compliment the staff enough for that because I know a huge part of her overcoming her people-shyness is because of them. My dogs are always happy to go there and happy to come home. My oldest doesn't even look back on her way to the play room! I've been a happy customer for over five years now. They truly care about the animals they look after and I wouldn't board my pets anyplace else. read more

We have been going to Muddy Paws since they relocated to 37th Street. We love everything about them. We used to go to Wags, but had a bad experience with them. We take our dog 3 times a week and he loves to go. I think the staff loves him as much as we do! I know that he is in great hands. The retail store is great too. I was having some food problems with one of my other dogs, but was given great advise and have changed to a much better food brand. Come to find out my dog is gluten intolerant. Problem solved. I have only used the groomers for nail trims and they are great, as well. My oldest dog doesn't play well with others so they allow me to sneak him in. One of the staff actually came out to my truck, one time to trim his nails! The owner, along with all the staff are ROCKSTAR!! There is no reason to go anywhere else. read more

It's been interesting watching Muddy Paws evolve over the past few years. When they first opened, we were really excited to have a pet store in the neighborhood. The staff seemed friendly enough (including their adorable dachunds) but their actual customer service was touch and go and selection overpriced. They were previously affiliated with a good trainer whom I'd used previously, but not sure who is doing their training currently. I've also not used their grooming or boarding services. Their move into holistic and healthy pet food, as well as a new location, seems to be well placed for Norfolk. I hope they do well. read more
