Took my grand-dog, Maisie, (a borzoi) in for a bath and groom package. Friendly staff at the check in counter. After dropping her off, we checked out the in house supply store, separate entrance from inside the groomer's office. The supply store was well stocked with everything you could want for your pet. We were called with an update about some things, Maisie needed an ear cleaning and a notice of an old scratch on one of her legs. Over all, with bathing, drying, ear cleaning, clipping of her nails, and trimmed her fur around her paw pads, it was very reasonable!! Maisie will be back for sure!! read more

This place is TERRIBLE. I got a new puppy and got an original quote of 110. The appointments thereafter they kept charging me more and more with some excuse about my dog not sitting still enough. Well yeah, it's literally a puppy and that's part of the job. This last visit they messed up the cut entirely on her head (even though it's always been the same). AND then tried to CHARGE MORE for it after AND tell me I should come more often than every 4 weeks WHAT. A. JOKE. Made an appointment for my border collie mix today and he came out smelling AMAZING, and de-shedded. We brought him in at 11am and picked him up at 4, which seemed a little long (only reason not a 5 star) but we've never had him groomed before so I'm not entirely sure if that's normal or not. My boy does not get along well with others, and they assured me he would be out of his kennel, the same as the others, but not with them... I am a frequent customer at muddy paws , I usually come in cause my dog enjoys the environment and the treats are inexpensive. I don't know whose dogs that are allowed to free roam in the store but after seeing on the door it stresses dogs be on the leash I am confused on why these bad mannered dogs are allowed to free roam. Usually I have no problem all the do is growl and bark at my dog and we ignore it, but today one of the dogs tried to attack my dog. The proper safety precautions were taken by me so I'm confused on why I had to defend my dog from Being attacked. mm mm mm, where do I start...we'll I will give credit where credit is due. The staff itself is AMAZING. Each of them true and passionate about their jobs and the dogs. HOWEVER that can only make up but for so much for the joke that is ownership. They are constantly informed about broke and or failing equipment that they refuse to fix or replace because it's not in the budget, cutting the budget for cleaning supplies asking staff to use less cleaning chemical than it calls for to pinch a penny and stretch it out. No drains in the big dog yard for run off, broken drains in the other yards backing up producing crabs in the building. Yes you read that correctly, literal mud crabs. staples exposed in the turf where dogs play, countless holes in the turf exposing pebbles for dogs to chew on and swallow. Again staff has done everything in their power to address these things with little to no acknowledgment from the owners. In fact when addressed in a meeting staff was told to be quiet about their concerns and when staff refused to be quiet about these issues they were asked to leave. The high turn over rate is a result of the owners arrogance and greed. So if you're wondering why you may come in and see a new face almost everyday and there is no consis in employment know there is a reason for that and it isn't because people just don't want to work. they've been over worked, underpaid and ignored. If you want a place that provides a sense of security, consistency and urgency towards your pets health and overall well-being I highly suggest you look else where before your pet becomes victim to the owners negligence on spending money on new fancy paint jobs and gates to make it LOOK nice instead of the things that actually matter in regards to keeping the dogs safe. read more

This is the only place I get my cat food from. The only downside is their hours, but I appreciate that they're not open 24/7 like a wal*mart. They have fresh dog biscuits in the form of the cutest holiday (ex: at Easter, they have little ducks and bunnies). I always get a couple for my mom's dogs. They have a large variety of cat & dog foods- wet & dry. I would recommend feeding your animal any foods from this store over other pet store foods... The ladies are always friendly, and you'll most likely be greeted by a little dog who's hanging out. I love coming here, and those little dogs are my favorite part!! read more

DO NOT TAKE YOUR PETS HERE! The employees yell their lungs out at them all day long.. poor dogs can't bark once because the employees immediately "SHUT UP!!!" It's sooooo sad. This place is beyond awful! The owners do not care about the animals brought to the facility! My dogs paw pads came completely off due to the excessive heat, splash pad and lack of enough breaks. They claim he had breaks but when a dog is hyper focused he needs to be removed from that environment. They said they would pay the vet bills because it is in fact employee neglect which I did not sign consent forms for that. Now they refuse to pay saying you can't prove it happened at the facility. I have a time stamped video of me picking him up and a time stamp video when I got home and saw his feet! I have been taking my dog here regularly for about a year just to get a bath and nail trim. Recently when I was taking my dog in, she immediately froze up the second I went to give her to the groomer and would not move out of fright. I took this as a sign and will not be going back. My dog LOVES people and for her to be suddenly so petrified set off some flags for me. I'm giving 2 stars just because they have never not done a good job, then again it's just a bath and nail trim. read more

When I called to schedule drop off for our dog I was told that since he just turned seven months yesterday that he would not be allowed to play with the other dogs but he would get one on one time with a trainer. Upon pick up I can honestly tell you that I do not think that they let my dog out at all to play or have one on one time with a trainer and that he was crated the whole time other than to use the bathroom (as far as I know) When I walked in to pick up our dog and told the girl the name of my dog she asked me "do you hear that", I was confused as to what she was trying to say and then she said "he's been doing that the whole time" (as in barking) like it was some kind of joke and she thought it was funny. Meanwhile I hear about 5 dogs barking and she was being very disrespectful for someone who is supposedly taking care of other peoples animals. I will not be returning. Then she rudely asked if we had scheduled to board him there for Christmas, I am assuming she was asking so that she could cancel since she had just told me that he is not allowed to board there until he gets neutered. She then proceeds to tell me that he had a few scratches on his nose/face because he was barking so much. HOW does a dog get scratches on his face from barking? I also want to mention that when I came to pick up my dog after boarding before I spoke with the rude woman there I saw another woman in the room behind the front desk yelling at the dogs to "shut up" because they were barking. I understand dogs can be hyper and upsetting sometimes but if you are supposedly a "trainer" and working with them directly, you should at least be qualified and be a decent human. Also I would like to mention I had already scheduled an appointment to have my dog neutered (since he just turned 7 months and the vet had told me no earlier than 7 months to neuter) and I had explained that I would not be boarding him until he was neutered, she could have been respectful and understanding but instead was condescending and just downright disgusting. I wish that I could think that I just had a bad experience one time but seeing/ having that happen to me & my dog was very upsetting and I will absolutely not be returning. I hope that no one else has the same experience I had and that things get better. I think that they need to have better training and customer service skills here and that maybe they should make sure the quality of their employees is a little better. Very upsetting. read more

Muddy Paws is a cool 'pet shop' in the Norfolk area off of Hampton Blvd. Its specialty seems to be organic food and treats for dogs, but they have a smaller supply of cat food/treats as well. The cutest thing about the store? The three little dachshunds I saw just lazily walking around the shop, too cute! They also have grooming and boarding, which looked like a nice and clean area (it looked all newly painted as well). The staff here was very friendly as well and were more than willing to explain the different vitamins and shampoos to me. I picked up a few treats for me dog; they have dog cookies, bones, chew toys, and more. This place is a little more on the expensive side, but the food is healthy and organic so it's worth the extra money for that special member of your family. read more

I've always been a fan, and we still are. But more than that, our dog is in love with this place: I think his dream is to be a Muddy Paws shop dog. Probably not happening since he's a bull-boxer, and not a dachshund, but a pup can dream, eh? Yes, we finally, actually, have a dog. Which means we aren't buying the amazing dog treats at Muddy Paws for other people's dogs quite as much because Jack would give us the big sad pouty eyes with the whine and the head tilt and oh-buddy-boi-boo-who's-a-good-dog-you-are-you-are-that's-right! Have some kangaroo jerky. Good boy! Unlike Russia and Sarah Palin, I can ACTUALLY see Muddy Paws from my house. And if the dog had any leash manners, we'd walk over there lickity-split. But because traffic is insane and I like my shoulders not being dislocated, Jack gets to ride the whole 2.5 blocks in the back seat of the car, whining the whole way because he just wants to get to daycare to play. And play he does. Thanks to their hours, he can play for nearly 12 full hours for just over $20 -- or half a day or whenever. The daycare packages save you a little extra money, and there are some great sales sometimes, so buy in bulk. He always comes home exhausted and is more than happy to sleep it off for a couple of days. The staff are incredibly patient with his impatience. Not getting him behind the counter quickly enough? That's a barking. Not opening the door to the play yard? That's a barking. You want him to sit first? Ha! That's a jumping lick to the face. Even so, they take it in stride. You can't work there and not love dogs, and it's obvious that they LOVE dogs. Jack has also boarded with them over a couple of weekends. When he sees us packing up his overnight bag, he gets way more excited than usual. I think he thinks of it as a giant sleepover, and he's still super-happy to go back. He's clearly treated well. We've only had him groomed once, but he came back smelling delightful and looking handsome, so we have no complaints (nothing to gush about either -- it was a bath and a nail trim. It's hard to gush about that). They sent him home with a jaunty little green bandana around his neck. He seemed to put on some airs and started spouting stuff about buying railroads, so we took it off. So, if you live in the area or commute past it, Muddy Paws is a great place for your dog to spend the day (or a few days), and is sure to come home happy and tired. read more

FIVE STARS TO THE GROOMERS! My little puppy made a mess of himself and I came into Muddy Paws distraught and in a frenzy. The manager (Alana) was so sweet and helpful and shaved the matted, gross parts of fur off my Pomeranian and cleaned up the fur on his paws too. I couldn't believe how clean and back to normal he was! It was cute how Alana was talking to my puppy the whole time she was working on him, it seemed to calm him down (although he is a drama queen anyway!) I also went into the retail store to pick up some dry shampoo and to pay for the grooming. I assume the lady at the register with 5 dogs was the owner. Sorry, minus one star because her energy was negative and she was NOT pleasant. Perhaps a bad day? Oh well. I have been taking my two dogs here for about a year. They have done a good job, even though the fur on my Yorkie's face is usually longer on one side than the other. No problem, I just trim it up. This past Saturday, I took both dogs for a full grooming. I asked for a #7 all over for my Peekapoo and a schnauzer cut for my Yorkie. When I picked them up, they had shaved off the skirt. I was upset, but what am I going to do. They made a mistake. After I get home, I looked him over more thoroughly. One side of his face is cut completely different from the other. Also, they didn't wash his face and there was a piece of matted fur stuck to one side. Not sure how that happened since he didn't have mats when he went in. On the Peekapoo, his ears were uneven, they left long hair between his toes, and they missed a bunch of spots on his belly and under his front legs. I was told the manager would call me today to discuss it. She didn't. I called there at 430p and she knew nothing about it. She offered me a free bath and sanitary trim to help the Yorkie's skirt grow back out? I asked for a refund and of course they don't do that. If you do take your animals here, make sure you check them thoroughly and make them fix what they can before leaving. If they shave your dog bald, well, you might be able to get a free bath! I'm not sure if it's appropriate to leave a review as I've never actually brought my dog here, but I live in the apartments that are right next door to the Muddy Paws building, so I can hear the dogs barking non-stop pretty much all day. I don't take issue with the barking, but I do take issue with the yelling that I hear from the staff that somehow manages to drown out the dog barking. My husband and I had at one point considered this boarding facility, but we've stopped after seeing how small the yard space is for the pups and hearing how the staff yells at them. read more

If your dog isn't acting properly according to the "trained" staff, they will be yelled at and pelted by a water hose. I wouldn't suggest taking your dog to this facility. The "trained" staff is about as unprofessional as it gets. No way in hell should you be screaming and yelling along with mistreating the animals ESPECIALLY when they do not belong to you. Boarded my dog there over Thanksgiving. The staff informed me that he had some diarrhea, which can be normal when dogs are boarded. They also gave me back his food bowl, which was absolutely disgusting. It smelled like vomit, and had a bunch of uneaten food in it. They said he hadn't finished dinner, but it wasn't even 4pm yet. Is that dinner time at muddy paws? I take him home, and realize he's fatigued and limping. He slept all day, and I hope he hasn't gotten an illness. He is up to date with all of his shots. He must have had no supervision. For $45 a day, I expect higher quality care. I will never board any of my animals here again. read more

I used to live in Norfolk and now live in Virginia Beach. This is literally my favorite place to go to for my dog's nails. They get them short, and are so nice. On the side they also have a store with everything available for pets such as cats, birds and dogs. It is well worth the commute and money and customer service is always good. read more

Apparently there was a miscommunication on rates for grooming over the phone. I was given an inflated price in person. I suggest getting your quotes in writing or by email before setting up an appointment to avoid this issue. I ended up getting the flea bath for my pet but I didn't see much change. Our dogs love boarding at Muddy Paws. The staff are always friendly and our dogs come home tired and happy. It gives me peace of mind knowing someone is at the facility 24/7 too. We recently got a complimentary bath for our dogs because they stayed longer than 5 nights. I was expecting a quick rinse, but I was very impressed that they brushed out our dogs very well, clipped their nails, and sent them home with a cute scarf. I should add that one of our dogs is very resistant to having her nails trimmed by us, so it's nice to know she was comfortable enough to let the groomer do her nails. We usually bathe our dogs ourselves at home, but I think we will have Muddy Paws groom them from now on! read more

This place is just adorable! Took my mom and her little one here with hopes of finding a natural food to reduce the constant itching for the past couple of weeks. Well, all I can say is that I experienced much better. Based on what some of the people said here on yelp, I expected something more. Yes, they are expensive. About 40% mark up on everything, but I can forgive that since they are a smaller store with some organic foods. However, the service here was awful. I was visibly waiting in line to pay while the cashier walked away while I was at the counter several times. It took me 30 min to pay when there was only one other person in the store. While I was in line waiting, the person answered the phone call of another customer and went off to check stock while I was in the middle of my transaction. Came in for grooming, this was her second time and it was phenomenal! Brittany was helpful when checking Mia in. She took note of how we wanted my Yorkie poo groomed, Ashley was very nice over the phone when I called they took me in 39 min after I had called so I was stoked. Plus muddy paws is in my way to ODU which is super convenient! Well for a small dog like Mia $50 is what they charge for grooming I had called other places that were cheaper to book however their customer service and professionalism were too far down the drain that I had to go with my instinct and bring her here, they do it all, nail trim, bath, cut and give any dog a whole lot of attention it was probably a fun experience for my soon to be 7 year old dog! we have a rescue German Shepard and she has anxiety. we gave her 4 melatonin pills as per her weight that muddy paws sells and it helps but she's still a nut case. We took her to petsmart and they immediately called us and told us we have to take her back because she's too anxious even though she's been before. her anxiety isn't something that is ever off. muddy paws was super understanding of her anxiety and they had 3 people assist in clipping her nails. No judgement, no questions asked, just professionals doing their job and providing a service that no one else would. I'm 41 weeks and clipping her nails isnt a task I can accomplish on my own. When I first adopted Relay, I wanted a professional grooming done and this place came highly recommended. I dropped him off and he came back looking great, and seemingly at ease with the staff who were very friendly. When I wanted to try out antlers as a chew I was told they had a large variety of natural pet treats, and this place came highly recommended. We swung by and while the prices were a touch high, they had a good selection of great quality food and treats and a staff who were very friendly. When I needed to knock out some spring cleaning and wanted the pup exercised and out of my hair, this place came highly recommended. I just wanted to say how wonderful the groomers are here. I have two pups, a big Boston Terrier and a Great Dane. They are so kind and patient with Luna the Dane. I've lived in Norfolk for 6 months and my Shiba Inu, Peyton, stays at Muddy Paws frequently. I've moved around quite a bit in the last few years and of all the places I've boarded Peyton Muddy Paws is the best. I feel really comfortable leaving Peyton there because I feel like everyone at Muddy Paws really care about my dog. They go out of their way to take care of her. I feel like they treat her as if she is their own. She can be a little difficult and they are so accommodating. For example, she is a small breed so most pet boarding places want to board her in a crate. But Peyton does very badly in crates. Muddy Paws has always been understanding and boarded her in a run. They are even very good about working me in when I make a last minute reservation. The customer service at Muddy Paws has always been exceptional. If I call to check on my dog, they are very nice and helpful letting me know exactly how my dog is doing. The store at Muddy Paws is great, too. They have a ton of rawhides and treats. I always grab Peyton a new treat after she's had a stay there. I've also gotten Peyton groomed there twice. They have a variety of shampoos including a shampoo that helped reduce Peyton's shedding. read more

Please, do not ever take your pets to this location for daycare, boarding or grooming. My husband and I went to Muddy Paws on 10/16 and witnessed an olive-complexion female grooming a small white dog. The groomer was extremely aggressive and abusive toward the very terrified dog. I saw her push and shove the dog numerous times and then saw as she yanked the leash that the dog was tethered to causing him to stumble. Not to mention that the leash was way too tight. I have used many groomers in the past and I have never seen anyone have to treat a dog with such abuse. It was completely uncalled for. If she were a true professional groomer, she would understand that her behavior was only increasing the dogs anxiety. I have never been do disgusted in my life. I was also disappointed in the lack of professionalism when we first walked in the door. There was a child behind the counter and no one greeted us until we were walking out the door. The animal abuse really put it over the top. I would never trust anyone at this location to care for my dogs. They may offer great choices for pet food and supplies, but they certainly don't live up to what their website says in that the treat all animals with love, patience and respect. What I witnessed couldn't have been farther from the truth. Edited - 12/3 I find it further disappointing that the owner's reply to my complaint did not accurately reflect the phone conversation that we had to discuss what happened. First of all, during our phone conversation it was never mentioned that the store allowed children volunteers, but I guess that is a good cover up for the lack of professionalism that we saw that day. Secondly, I was told that the groomer did not want to groom the little dog because the dog had mats and would be difficult to groom. Rather than turn away the business or treat the dog with the love, patience, and respect that is promised, she took her frustration out on the dog. I was hoping that our phone conversation would have resulted in the disciplinary action that is obviously needed, but based on the response, it appears that the owner is only defending the bad behavior and service. Because of this, I will not be giving "Muddy Paws" a second chance and hope other pet owners will do the same! read more

For example, rather than telling you by phone when you make an appointment that they want specific documentation on such-and-such a shot, they wait until you show with your dog and then turn you away. Twice this happened to me. Both times, I would've happily have brought the documents with me, if I knew they were required. Instead, Muddy Paws groomers unnecessarily wasted an hour of my day while I retrieved the documents. Staff smugly shrugged it off as if it were nothing. read more

Great place for dog daycare. My medium sized dog plays in the front room and I get to see updates of her on their Facebook page. Biggest plus about this place is it smells great and is clean. Most of the time when you visit boarding facilities they smell very doggy-ish, not this place, when you come in the staff is cleaning or is about to clean. Plus, my dog is always tired and ready to eat and sleep when she gets home from daycare. I have also used their grooming services. My dog's nails were trimmed appropriately but her coat was not trimmed as close as I needed to help her deal with the summer shed. Otherwise she looked good. If I could change one this about this place is it would be the location. It is right before the ODU campus on Hampton Blvd. If you are coming from the Midtown tunnel make sure to allow for extra time in case a freak traffic jam occurs on Hampton Blvd. read more

I absolutely love, love, love, LOVE Muddy Paws. The pup loved it as well! We were only in town for two days, but we brought Jacoby there both of those days. The place was extremely clean, my dog smelled like sunshine and roses on pick-up, and the staff was fantastic. Julia was super helpful! I also adored the products available in the store, the deer antler's were extremely well priced compared to the dog speciality shops in Tyson's Corner, VA and they also offered a great selection of beef bones. Overall, next time we're in the Norfolk area, Muddy Paws will be our first choice, hands down. read more
